Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book discusses current findings on regulatory disorders in infants and offers practical guidelines for diagnosis and intervention. Focusing on core infant and toddler concerns including crying, sleeping, feeding, clinginess, and aggression, it presents a developmental continuum from normal to disturbed behavior regulation and examines science-based strategies for halting this trajectory. Case examples and widely used tools illustrate diverse approaches to assessment and diagnosis, emphasizing nuances of parent-infant interactions and parents‘ reactions that may fail to answer, or may even exacerbate, the child’s distress. And chapters outline counseling and therapy options for infants and parents, so that persistent problems do not become entrenched in children’s future behavior or lead to long-term family dysfunction. Among the topics covered: Approaches to diagnosing regulatory disorders in infants. Feeding disorders in infants and young children. Developmentally appropriate vs. persistent defiant and aggressive behavior. Treatment approaches for regulatory disorders. Video and video feedback in counseling and therapy. Regulatory Disorders in Infants is an essential resource for clinicians and practitioners as well as researchers and graduate students in clinical child and school psychology, pediatrics, social work, psychiatry, and family studies.

Given that educational institutions were among the first to embrace the new technology of behavior change in the late 1950s and early 1960s, it is apparent that we have had the opportunity to learn a great deal. The evolution of the field of behavior therapy has witnessed a change in the behavior therapist from an adolescent fascination with repeatedly demonstrating the effectiveness of the new technology to a mature recognition of the complex implications of the behav ioral paradigm for individuals, systems, and society. Many "facts" now taken for granted were considered impossibilities a mere two decades ago. In her 1986 presidential address to Division 25 of the American Psychological Association, Beth Sulzer-Azaroff reviewed a number of changes in attitude in education that were strongly influenced by behavior therapy. Most educators now agree that (a) everyone can learn, (b) complex skills can be taught, (c) precise, general, and durable performance can be taught, and (d) barriers to learning can be overcome. In addition, we would add that behavior therapy is being applied to increasingly more complex human problems, such as social skill deficits, internalizing disorders, and dysfunctional systems and organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underlying the design of the Handbook of Psychopharmacology is a prejudice that the study of drug influences on the mind has advanced to a stage where basic research and clinical application truly mesh. These later volumes of the Handbook are structured according to this conception. In certain volumes, groups of drugs are treated as classes with chapters ranging from basic chemistry to clinical application. Other volumes are assembled around topic areas such as anxiety or affective disorders. Thus, besides chapters on individual drug classes, we have included essays addressing broad areas such as "The Limbic-Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal System and Human Be havior" and "Peptides and the Central Nervous System. " Surveying these diverse contributions, one comes away with a sentiment that, far from being an "applied" science borrowing from fundamental brain chemistry and physiology, psychopharmacology has instead provided basic researchers with the tools and conceptual approaches which now are advancing neurobiology to a central role in modern biology. Especially gratifying is the sense that, while contributing to an understanding of how the brain functions, psychopharmacology is a discipline whose fruits offer genuine help to the mentally ill with promises of escalating benefits in the future. The book first offers information on key concepts, including environmental factors in adaptation, nonadaptive behavior patterns, and a critique of approaches to normal and psychiatrically impaired behaviors. The text then surveys the development from biological organism to adult social being; social competence and societal expectations; and measurement of social competence. Topics include early experience and psychological development, social status as a way of life, social, moral, and intellectual development, and sex differences in social competence. The manuscript takes a look at social competence, adaptive potential, and psychological development and adaptive potential and adaptive failure. The publication also examines the definition and measurement of adaptive failure, conceptual issues in adaptive failure, and pathological behavior style and life-style. The text is a dependable reference for readers wanting to study human adaptation and its failures.

Book excerpt: Using a process approach, this in-depth introduction to parenting children from birth through adolescence includes the theories and practical strategies for how parents and caregivers can establish secure and close emotional relationships with their children. The book focuses on two basic tasks of parenting: creating close emotional relationships with children and establishing effective limits for children. It shows how parents carry out these tasks with children of different ages and with changing life circumstances (i.e. working parents, divorce). Each chapter includes a section on the joys of parenting, reinforcing the positive aspects of being a parent.
