The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes of middle school students on their perception of technology in an instrumental music classroom. The study compiled results based on three areas of technology: music applications and programs, interactive devices, and multimedia. Each area of technology was studied to determine the perceived effectiveness of learning musical notation, rhythm reading, and general learning of how to play an instrument based upon factors such as reaction, attitude, engagement, participation, and understanding of each topic. Information was collected through a survey that took place after an eight-week period of basic music learning. The results showed that students had a generally positive perception of using technology in an instrumental music classroom and that the most favorable type of technology was interactive technology. This type of technology was perceived to help the participants most with learning musical notation and rhythms.

The literature describes numerous school music programs in the United States of America (USA) that include music technology in the curriculum and use technology to support music programs. However, this bigger picture does not tell us what is being experienced in each school across the USA. Case studies will help us understand the day-to-day experiences of individual schools. The study population of this investigation involved a sample of convenience, including music teachers from within one county in the Inland Northwest of the USA in close proximity to the researcher. One-on-one interview technique allowed for in-depth responses to open-ended questions. In analyzing the data, an effort was made to accurately represent the perspectives of the interview participants. Results were reported in narrative style, leading to a discussion on implications for the profession and ideas for further research. While it was reported that none of the schools offer music technology programs, all of the teachers described using technology to support music classes. Alongside the wealth of studies in this field, this investigation contributes a small glimpse of what some music teachers in the USA are facing at their schools pertaining to technology. lt is anticipated that the results of the study may inform those making decisions regarding music policy and curriculum, and the allocation of resources for technology in school music programs. Teachers might be informed by the various examples of how technology is being used in the music classroom and in student practicing outside of the classroom. There may be teachers who identify with the limitations and challenges experienced by these five teachers regarding the use of technology in their programs. The results might inform higher education curricular decisions pertaining to the preparation of teachers for using technology in school music programs. This investigation also leads to suggestions on ideas for research, including exploration of reasons for the challenges teaches face in this area and the perspectives of students on the topic"--Leaves ix-x.

Clarke, who wrote "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" (1984, p. 36). To me, technology has always been somewhat magical. Growing up I liked both magic tricks and electronic gadgets. When I was very young I remember being picked out of the audience by a magician to help him with a trick, thrilled with the seemingly mystical act that he accomplished with my assistance. I loved seeing magicians live or on TV, and I borrowed magic books from the local public library to learn tricks that I tried out on my family. As I became older and obtained various technological devices, they too fascinated me with the somewhat magical (to me) things they were able to do. Two items, in particular, stand out in my memory. I acquired an analog audio tape recorder that I used to play duets with myself by recording one part and then playing it back while performing the other part live. This made practicing my euphonium so much more fun and likely increased my practice time as I worked to record the perfect "take" of each line of the various duets I had in my books! I was also excited to receive a CB radio one Christmas, which allowed me to stay in close contact, at all times of the day and night, with my best friend who had received the same gift. It augmented my social network, such as it existed in those days. In addition, it was amazing to be able to use the radio to listen to and learn from the conversations picked out of the air of people from all over. Technology had magical qualities and I loved how it allowed me to do things that were otherwise not possible, as well as things that made life more interesting and enjoyable. I still feel the same way today. ""--

This mixed methods study utilized a survey, interviews, and artifacts to interpret to what extent teachers and principals value music education as a contributing component of the academic program. The researcher aimed to comprehend how educators perceive music when compared to other academic subjects, how underlying factors and experiences contribute to perceptions of music education, and how perceptions align between teachers and principals. The data gathered for this study drew upon practicing educators from Pennsylvania public schools who serve in primary and middle years schools. 135 participants responded to a survey distributed via email, and 10 of the respondents were selected for follow up interviews.The findings of the study indicated that classroom teachers and principals generally perceive music to be less important that other academic subjects. The findings of the study also indicated that an educator's background in music and exposure to music have an impact on their perceptions of music education, although the level of impact varies depending on the specific type of musical undertaking. The findings of the study also showed that the perceptions of the importance of music education aligned between teachers and principals: teachers and principals agreed that music was a vital component to the academic curriculum. Lastly, the findings of the study indicated that educators in K-8 schools generally value music education more than educators in K-5 schools.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine if the implementation of a technology-based music class in public high schools in the northeastern United States had any significant impact on the overall music department enrollment and on enrollment in traditional performance ensemble courses, such as band and chorus, as they are the courses most offered in high schools in the United States. The two phases of the study included identifying eligible schools and collecting data from schools. A six-year history of music department and school enrollment data was collected from participating schools (n = 12). Individual music classes in each school were categorized as Band, Chorus, Orchestra, Technology-based, or Other Music Classes. Results found a statistically significant increase in overall Music Department enrollment and no statistically significant change in enrollment in Band or Chorus after the implementation of a technology-based music class. Reductions in enrollment did occur in Other Music classes. No significant change to the number of teachers in music departments was found. This study suggests that implementing a technology-based music classes may help increase overall music department enrollment without negatively impacting enrollment in traditional performance ensembles and may not necessitate funding for additional faculty.

I wanted to learn how those technologies impacted musical collaboration, tools for teaching, and communication between orchestra directors. The first study was an examination of how high school string players, from an existing chamber group, viewed online music collaboration. This case study revealed that these high school students preferred to utilize technologies with which they were familiar, in particular, Facebook and Spotify. The second study determined which mobile apps Pennsylvania music teachers used in their classrooms. The questionnaire returned results from 342 app users, and 392 app non-users. In addition to a robust list of apps being actively used by K-12 music teachers, I also gained an understanding of why more than half these teachers did not use apps in their classrooms. The third study investigated uses of the Youth Orchestra Directors Facebook page and explored user perceptions of the (researcher created) page. This case study revealed that there was great interest in this Facebook page, but the page needed more activity to be helpful for the population. In addition, I gathered personal and professional attributes (via questionnaire) from these group members to learn more about who made up the youth orchestra director community. These three exploratory studies helped me understand perceptions of technology in the orchestra community from students, teachers, and youth orchestra directors. These studies also helped me recognize how much work we, as music educators, need to do to understand the impact technology has on our classrooms, particularly as technology advances rapidly.
