Book excerpt: Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Color plates and black-and-white photographs illustrate works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Drawing on scientific studies of pigments and materials, artists' treatises, colourmen's archives, and contemporary and modern accounts, Anthea Callen demonstrates how raw materials and paintings are profoundly interdependent. She analyses the material constituents of oil painting and the complex processes of 'making' entailed in all aspects of artistic production, discussing in particular oil painting methods for landscapists and the impact of plein air light on figure painting, studio practice and display. Insisting that the meanings of paintings are constituted by and within the cultural matrices that produced them, Callen argues that the real 'modernity' of the Impressionist enterprise lies in the painters' material practices."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: As Leslie Carlyle points out in The Artist's Assistant: Oil Painting Instruction Manuals and Handbooks in Britain 1800-1900 with Reference to Selected Eighteenth-Century Sources (a revised and expanded edition of her doctoral dissertation), the exchange and transmission of information among artists on the technical aspects of their calling have been carried on through mostly an "oral tradition," with some further enlightenment provided through artists' diaries, letters, and the occasional published article. In the nineteenth century in England, however, a remarkable number of books and pamphlets having to do with oil painting were published, following on the heels of a large body of work published in the previous century. This book contains remarkable scholarship of the highest order. It provides a wealth of information about the development of English oil painting in an accessible and readable way, and each chapter concludes with an extensive list of notes and references. Its story, to me at least, reveals that two hundred years ago artists and manufacturers were dealing thoughtfully and thoroughly with their materials. This is a reference that should be in every art-history library. It will prove an especially valuable resource for conservators who do research in order to treat nineteenth-century English paintings. --Publisher description

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new history of the techniques, materials, and aesthetic ambitions that gave rise to the radiant verisimilitude of Jan van Eyck’s oil paintings on panel. Panel painters in both the middle ages and the fifteenth century created works that evoke the luster of precious stones, the sheen of polished gold and silver, and the colorful radiance of stained glass. Yet their approaches to rendering these materials were markedly different. Marjolijn Bol explores some of the reasons behind this radical transformation by telling the history of the two oil painting techniques used to depict everything that glistens and glows—varnish and glaze. For more than a century after his death, the fifteenth-century painter Jan van Eyck was widely credited with inventing varnish and oil paint, on account of his unique visual realism. Once this was revealed to be a myth, the verisimilitude of his work was attributed instead to a new translucent painting technique: the glaze. Today, most theories about how Van Eyck achieved this realism revolve around the idea that he was the first to discover or refine the glazing technique. Bol, however, argues that, rather than being a fifteenth-century refinement, varnishing and glazing began centuries before. Drawing from an extensive body of recipes, Bol pieces together how varnishes and glazes were first developed as part of the medieval art of material mimesis. Artisans embellished metalwork and wood with varnishes and glazes to imitate gold and gems; infused rock crystal with oil, resin, and colorants to imitate more precious minerals; and oiled parchment to transform it into the appearance of green glass. Likewise, medieval panel painters used varnishes and glazes to create the look of enamel, silk, and more. The explorations of materials and their optical properties by these artists stimulated natural philosophers to come up with theories about transparent and translucent materials produced by the earth. Natural historians, influenced by medieval artists’ understanding of refraction and reflection, developed theories about gems, their creation, and their optical qualities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " 'The art of painting in oils, ' says the author of this little handbook, "is a very difficult one, and not the least of its difficulties consists in the great uncertainty that exists as to the proper methods to be pursued." So far as results recommend a particular method, Mr. Collier's modus operandi is abundantly recommended. His system, as set forth here, is a modification of Mr. Poynter's, from whose teaching in the Slade School it is directly derived. But Mr. Collier does not restrict students to his own method, and in this manual he gives those of other artists, as well as his own, and the rules in force in the South Kensington Schools. His own method is a direct one, and beginners in the art of oil painting will receive valuable assistance from the suggestions he gives. The work is divided into two parts, dealing respectively with practice and theory. The second part is as interesting to the general reader as it is helpful to the student; for, besides containing the rules governing aerial perspective, it includes a very lucid description of Young's undulatory theory of light; -- a theory which explains Achromatopsia and other puzzling anomalies in colour sensation." --The Ruskin Reading Guild Journal, Volume 1

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improve your perception and use of colour in oil paint and gain many practical insights into techniques, set up and more in this fantastic book from the artist John Collier. Broken down into sections on the Practical and Theory of painting Collier is particularly useful for those looking to paint (or study) in his own Pre-Raphaelite style, although any student of oil painting would do well to study his techniques. The section on Theory discusses colour in a way very different to modern teachers, so while it may be difficult to understand for some others may find that it suits their mind and opens up new concepts. Collier was particularly well known for his use of colour, portraits and history painting, and his skills in these areas shine through in the advice he gives in A Manual of Oil Painting. This makes this little book a must read for those interested in the art of his period from both practical and academic perspectives.
