Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course in Quantitative Chemical Analysis Gravimetric and Volumetric In the following pages methods for complete analyses are outlined, and substances have been selected for analysis which, it is believed, will illustrate the more common methods of separating and determining the parts of a compound or mixtures of compounds. In some determinations, two or more methods are outlined. In other cases, even though only one process is suggested, it should be borne in mind that there is often a choice of several methods, and the same result can often be attained in many different ways. The larger works should be freely consulted by the student that he may become acquainted with the variety of processes that are more or less in common use. The work is graduated, and both in the gravimetric and volumetric divisions proceeds from simpler substances and operations to the more complex. The arrangement is such that any part may be omitted to suit the time and convenience of the student. The ionic theory is now quite generally employed to explain chemical reactions. The theory is usually studied in the courses in general chemistry, and it has not been deemed necessary to introduce the subject here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Quantitative Chemical Analysis This book is intended primarily for University and College students, and in planning it we have not overlooked the fact that those who study Chemistry as a subsidiary subject usually devote so short a time to it that it is impossible for them to cover any comprehensive course, and that, even when Chemistry is one of the main subjects of study, the student, as a rule, has a strictly limited time for laboratory work. We have endeavoured, therefore, to arrange the book in such a manner that some knowledge of the principles of Quantitative Analysis may be acquired by a practical study of the subjects included in Parts I., II., and III., and that the further requirements of those who are making a special study of Chemistry should be met by the later portions of the book. Volumetric Analysis is dealt with in Part II. Before Gravi metric Analysis, partly because the manipulation is easier, and partly because the exercises in Volumetric Analysis present a greater variety than those in simple Gravimetric Analysis. The educative value of volumetric methods is probably greater than that of any other branch of analysis, and we are of opinion that a student should receive a thorough training in Volumetric Analysis' even if the time remaining at his disposal permits of little or no gravimetric work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Instruction in Quantitative Chemical Analysis for Beginning Students: With Explanatory Notes, Questions and Analytical Problems This book is intended for use with classes consisting of students who have completed a substantial year's work in Elementary Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis, and who are beginning the study of Quantitative Analysis. On the laboratory side its main object is to furnish the student with directions sufficiently detailed to enable him to do successful work with a minimum of personal oversight from the instructor. The instructor is thereby placed in a position, in the laboratory, as well as in the classroom, to exert his efforts more especially towards the development in his students of theoretical knowledge and the power to think. For the best results, the laboratory work should of course be accompanied by lectures and recitations; and, with the latter in mind, it has seemed desirable to include the questions of Part IV, and the stoichiometrical problems of Part V. The questions of Part IV are for the most part answered in the notes or elsewhere in the book; but it has been the writer's experience that beginners react more favorably to concrete questions assigned in advance for study, than to the same questions when put to them for the first time just after they are supposed to have mastered the details and principles of a specific analytical process. The problems of Part V are such as arc regularly met with in analytical work, and their conscientious study will give the student an insight into the principles of a wide variety of processes; the answers to the problems have been intentionally omitted. It has been the writer's practice to require, as a written exercise to be handed in at the beginning of a recitation, the solution of a definite number of problems each week throughout the course; these to be graded and returned at the end of the following recitation. Part I comprises a somewhat detailed discussion of those principles, both of theory and practice, which should be constantly kept in mind by the worker in analytical chemistry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Course of Quantitative Chemical Analysis: With Explanatory Notes and Stoichiometrical Problems It has been found expedient with large classes to allow the whole class to work simultaneously upon the same procedure (for example, that for the determination of chlorine in sodium chlo ride), since classroom instruction can then be made more effective. Each individual is, however, permitted to work as rapidly as his capacity admits; and to such students as exhibit unusual facility in manipulation extra analyses are assigned. The balance should rest on a perfect level, and should be adjusted so that the right and left arms exactly counterpoise. 2. A small wide-mouthed bottle, half filled with concentrated sulphuric acid (or recently ignited potassium carbonate) should be placed in the balance case, for the purpose of keeping the air in the case practically free from moisture. 3. Substances or vessels should never be weighed while hot. And to prevent the deposition of moisture on them, they should be cooled in dried air, - i. e., in a desiccator over sulphuric acid or calcium chloride. 4. Volatile substances, as well as very hygroscopic substances, should be weighed in closed containers. The method of weighing by difference should be employed. This consists simply in weighing a quantity of the substance in the container, removing a convenient quantity for analysis, and again weighing the container with the remainder of the substance. The difference between the two readings is the amount of substance taken. 5. The substance to be weighed should never be placed upon the bare balance pan; weighing glasses should always be used. 6. The substance to be weighed should always be placed upon the left balance pan, and the weights upon the right. 7. In transferring the container with the substance from the desiccator to the balance, forceps should be used, and not the fingers. Neither should weights ever be handled with the fingers. 8. The swinging of the balance beam should always be arrested before placing weights, or articles to be weighed, upon the balance pans, and before removing the same from the balance pans. 9. In weighing, the weights should be tried systematically, beginning with the large ones and working downward. 10. The doors of the balance case should not be allowed to remain open longer than necessary. The case must be closed when the final adjustment is made with the rider. When the pointer swings to an equal distance on either side of the central line (or zero-point), the balance is in equilibrium. 11. In reading weights, but two units should be used, - grammes and milligrammes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Quantitative: Chemical Analysis, With a Short Treatise on Gas Analysis A preliminary edition of this book, as many of my friends are aware, was issued a little over a year ago for the benefit of chiefly my own students. That edition, however, was little more than a reproduction of what had long had currency in my laboratory as a trypographed book. Hence this volume may be introduced as having already been used - and I hope not without success - in a largely-attended teaching laboratory for a series of years. However it may stand with analysis generally, quantitative analysis can be taught only by examples; and in the earlier stages of the course the technicalities of the subject are the principal things to be taught. Hence our exercises on "analytical methods" (section 2) are arranged, not according to any scientific system, but so that, at any given point of his progress, the student has become familiar with as many different operations as could have been learned during the time. To some of my readers the tone of the earlier exercises more especially may savour a little of mechanical drilling. Why tell the student so minutely what he has to do and hinder him from exercising his own ingenuity? Some ten years ago, if a book like the present had been placed before me, I should have asked this question myself. But I have since come to modify my views. The technicalities of quantitative analysis are the very things which the student is not likely to find out by himself. He had better be drilled into doing them correctly. What is the good, for instance, of letting him spoil a series of ammonia determinations by mismanaging his chloro-platinate precipitates? It surely is better to show him quite directly what he has to do; and if it is, why should not the book tell him, and thus save the time of the teacher? No fear of any talented student being spoiled by a course of judicious drilling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quantitative Chemical Analysis, Vol. 2 The second volume of this Edition Of Fresenius' Quantitative Chemical Analysis is, from Part II. Where the Special Part begins, not merely a new edition in the ordinary sense of the word, but rather an almost entirely new book, there being scarcely two consecutive pages which are identical with those Of the previous edition. The Special Part includes the analysis Of potable waters, mineral waters, technical products, and minerals, as well as the estimation of sugars, alcohol, tanning materials, and anthracene; also the estimation Of the inorganic matter in plants, the analysis Of soils and manures, and the examination Of atmospheric air. This part has been greatly extended and made far more com prehensive than in the preceding edition, consequent on the application Of chemical analysis 'for the purposes of Hygiene, Commerce, Technical Industries, Metallurgy, and Agriculture, having become far more widely recognised than formerly. The thorough revision of the Special Part afforded the late author of the book an Opportunity Of introducing the various analytical processes which had been published since the appear ance of the former edition, such as Volhard's method of estimating silver, Bunsen's process for separating arsenic from antimony in the analysis of pyrites, and Kjeldahl's method for estimating organic nitrogen, including the various modifications of it. Which have been proposed also new processes for the analysis Of argol. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
