This book was released on 2005-04-18 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2004 in the subject Sociology - Methodology and Methods, grade: A-, San Diego State University (Sociology), language: English, abstract: Based on 14 qualitative guided interviews, U.S.-American and European students environmental awareness are investigated. The topics concentrated on in the interview guide were values connected with environmental protection and nature, concrete actions, awareness of real and possible consequences of pollution, the fear of them and sources of information. Students from the U.S. as well as from Europe value environmental protection. European students are more concerned about environmental protection and more negative about pollution. A higher concern of European students can especially be manifested when it comes to genetically modified food, of which American students don't have any fear at all. Both groups enjoy being in the nature, American students like camping, European ones like to take a walk or hike. Religion influences European students' values of environmental protection, but not American ones. European students consider recycling more self-evidently and are more likely to buy organic food. American students mention activities like not littering and planting trees, which European students don't mention. American and European students equal each other in terms of thinking that Europe is better in environmental protection than the U.S. and their environmental values having an effect on their voting behavior.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many studies have shown the mental, physical, and academic benefits of environmental education to students. Equally important, environmental education can develop our students into more environmentally minded citizens. However, we are learning that most students are not receiving accurate environmental information while in school, which may impact their attitudes toward the environment and subsequent actions to protect it. Understanding current college-aged students' (Generation Z's) attitudes toward the environment are critical as they are next in line to make political and business decisions that will affect our planet. Using the New Ecological Paradigm Scale (NEP), 1,556 community college students were surveyed to determine their attitudes toward the environment. This dissertation analyzed these secondary data to understand whether NEP scores vary by student age (traditional, non-traditional), gender (male, female), and race (White, Hispanic, Black, Asian American, Native American). Data were also analyzed to determine if differences in attitudes exist among students enrolled in various science and non-science courses. If individual groups of students have lower NEP scores, it will allow the school to adjust their curriculum to increase and improve environmental content delivered either as a standalone or in an interdisciplinary manner with other courses.

Book excerpt: Global climate change is one of the most pressing issues of the contemporary age, and a problem to which different countries have offered various responses. This study uses social, cultural, and behavioral frameworks to address the differences between French and American people's environmental attitudes and behaviors. Two studies are presented here. The first is an analysis of data from an environmental survey conducted by the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP), used to establish the relationships between environmental attitudes and behaviors in the United States and in France. The second study is a questionnaire of our design distributed to French and American participants, which tests the influence of cultural norms on perceptions of environmental attitudes and behaviors. Our main hypotheses were (a) American attitudes and behaviors would correlate while those of the French would not; and (b) Americans would emphasize environmental attitudes while French participants would emphasize environmental behaviors. Our results showed that (a) environmental attitudes predict environmental behaviors in the United States but not in France; (b) Americans emphasized norms of environmental attitudes more than norms of environmental behaviors; (c) French people emphasized norms of environmental attitudes and behaviors to the same degree. We concluded that the desire to adhere to perceived cultural norms is a strong predictor of environmental behavior. Since French participants show an already high level of environmental behavior, our recommendations for future action focus on the United States. We suggest that future campaigns designed to promote environmentally conscious behavior focus on forming perceptions of society as high in both pro-environmental attitudes and behavior.

Book Synopsis Surveying Climate-Relevant Behavior by : Markus Hadler
Download or read book Surveying Climate-Relevant Behavior written by Markus Hadler and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-12 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book discusses the contribution of sociology and survey research to climate research. The authors address the questions of which behaviors are of climate relevance, who is engaging in these behaviors, in which contexts do these behaviors occur, and which individual perceptions and values are related to them. Utilizing survey research, the book focuses on the measurement of climate-relevant behaviors with population surveys and develops an instrument that allows a valid estimate of an individual’s GHG emissions with a few core items. While the development of these instruments was based on surveys and qualitative interviews conducted in Austria, the instruments were subsequently tested in a set of 31 European countries, revealing the international relevance of such research. The book also concludes with a brief consideration of the effects of the COVID-19 crisis on environmental attitudes, situating the project globally.

Book excerpt: The study was undertaken to explore the relationship between environmental attitude and pro-environmental behavior and comparison of these variables among students/teachers, public/private secondary schools and different gender respondents. All the secondary schools both Public, as well as Private, Boys and girls in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, were the universe of the study. 200 Secondary level students and teachers were randomly selected as sample of the study. The data was collected through an adopted scale by Heyl, Moyano DÃaz and Cifuentes's (2013) scale of 'Environmental attitudes' and 'Pro-Environmental Behavior'. The data collected were processed by applying SPSS-23 version. Reliability test applied to test items of all three variables confirmed reliability from acceptable to good ranges. The mean value for all variables indicated agreement of respondents with the questions asked. The results of one sample t-test also give results expressing agreement of a majority of respondents with the questions raised in all three variables. There was a positive relationship between environmental attitude and pro-environmental behavior indicated by the results of Pearson correlation test.

Book Synopsis Comparing the Environmental Knowledge, Sensitivity and Behaviors of American High School Students Educated in the United States to Those Educated in India by : Mark Nystrom

This book was released on 2008 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does the environmental knowledge, sensitivity and locus of control of American high school students vary based on where they are educated, whether in India or at home in the United States? This study was a replication of a previous Hamline NSEE capstone by a chemistry/physics teacher in Minnesota in 2005 with students enrolled in the American Embassy School in India. The students in the study of both schools were enrolled in high school chemistry classes. The design of both studies included the model of pro-environmental behavior by Kollmus and Agyeman in 2002. Using t-tests to compare scores in the three areas of interest, the results showed no significant differences between the student scores in Minnesota and those at the Embassy School in India. However, the goal of utilizing the same instrument in a different setting with similar students was met and does add to the literature.
