Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Companion to the Book of Genesis It may be proper to inform the reader, that it was not my intention to write a complete commentary on the book of Genesis, or, in any sense, a prac tical one. He need not therefore be surprised, if many things are here passed over which could not properly have been omitted in a more voluminous work, composed on a more extensive plan. The book now submitted to his inspection is intended as a companion to the first part of the Pentateuch. Far from being designed to lessen the importance or supersede the use of the inspired record, it does but accompany it as a servant and attendant. It is expected, therefore, that the reader will peruse it, and especially the Analysis, with the sacred volume open before him. Those who are acquainted with the original Hebrew, will, of course, prefer the fountain head of the truth. Others will find our admirable and generally accurate English transla tion among the very best and purest of the streams. In the preparation both of the Analysis and the Notes, it has been my object to illustrate the book of Genesis by a constant reference to the original text, to other portions of Scripture, and to the best sources and aids of interpretation. In the hope, that, of those who may favor this volume with their attention, a considerable number will be com petent to examine original authorities for them selves, it appeared to be due to that class of readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unity of the Book of Genesis It professes to trace the growth of this legislation from simple and primitive forms to those which are more complex and which imply a later and more developed civilization. And it confidently affirms that these laws could not have been committed to writing in their present form for many centuries after the age of Moses. These hypotheses are discussed in a general way in my "Higher Criticism of the Pentateuch," where the fallacy and inconclusiveness of the reasoning by which they are defended and the falsity of the conclusions deduced from them are exposed. In order to a complete refutation of these hypotheses it is necessary to show still further by a detailed examination their inapplicability to, and incompatibility with, the phenomena of the Pentateuch, and that, so far from solving the question of its origin, they are destitute of any real basis; they find no support in the Pentateuch itself, but are simply the creations of learned ingenuity and a lively imagination. The present treatise occupies itself exclusively with the document hypothesis, and aims to prove that the book of Genesis is not a compilation from different documents, but is the continuous work of a single writer. The demonstration that this hypothesis has no foothold in Genesis effectually overturns it for the rest of the Pentateuch, or, if the critics please, the Hexateuch. It took its rise in Genesis; the most plausible arguments in its favor are drawn from that book; and the verdict rendered by that book substantially settles the case for those that follow. It is on the basis of the assumption that it is firmly established in Genesis that it is carried through the Hexateuch. If that assumption is proved to be false, the hypothesis collapses entirely. What is here proposed is a critical study of Genesis from beginning to end, chapter by chapter and section by section. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Genesis The incomplete and fragmentary character Of the following notes has delayed their appearance in their present shape, and has caused me to hesitate long as to the expediency of publishing them. But the recep tion already accorded to my father's writings has been such as to confirm my own conviction that any authentic record of his thoughts possesses an intrinsic interest and value transcending the mere form in which they are clothed; and I believe that the Notes on Genesis will not be found deficient in those qualities which mark the works already published. God singles out Abraham from an idolatrous people, and makes him the father of the chosen Nation. God passes by Ishmael and calls Isaac. In Genesis the truth of salvation is typically displayed. Our fallen first parents are clothed by God Himself, clothed with skins: to procure those skins death had to come in, blood must be shed, the innocent was slain in the stead of the guilty. Only thus could man 's shame be covered, and only thus could the sinner be fitted to stand before the thrice holy God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Narratives of Genesis The subject A nave Men asked to speak on is a large one, and is complicated with many questions - critical, archaeological, scientific, exegetical. You will therefore bear with me if many points have to be touched upon in a cursory manner, and if some things have to be omitted altogether on which you would probably wish to hear me Speak. The subject is the Early Narratives in the Book of Genesis. By the Early Narratives are to be understood the first eleven chapters of the Book - those which pre cede the times of Abraham. These chapters present peculiarities of their own, and I confine attention to them, although the critical treatment applied to them is not confined to these chapters, but extends through out the whole Book of Genesis, the Book of Exodus, and the later history with much the same result in reducing them to legend. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the Book of Genesis Important as Scripture Commentaries are, and indispensable as they must be to the rapid progress of the gospel in Spanish speaking lands, it will be readily seen that the demand for them among the possible Evangelical communicants (most of them very poor) found in Europe, America, North Africa and the former Insular possessions of Spain, including ministers and students for the ministry, is not sufficient to induce any publishing house to risk money in a work like mine; SO that I am reduced to the necessity of doing all the work, and then raising all the money to print it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Genesis: With Introduction and Notes The unexpected death of Dr Driver in 1914 has prevented any further revision of this Commentary, as he has left no materials available for the purpose. It is however worth mentioning that since the ninth edition appeared Dr Driver published a revised edition of his Introduction to the Lite rature of the Old Testament (9th Ed. 1913) and in the Addenda to that volume (pp. Xxvi - xxxiii) will be found a few notes bearing on Genesis, and particularly his last and fullest discussion of the controversy about the value of the Names of' God as a clue to the sources of the Pentateuch. He there refers with approval to articles in the Expositor by Dr Skinner, since republished in book form ('the Divine Names' in Genesis, Hodder and Stoughton and also to the Appendix in the Rev. D. C. Simpson s Pentateuchal Criticism (hodder and Stoughton, which was written at Dr Driver's suggestion and had the benefit of his revision. The ninth edition, of which this is a reprint, consequently represents the final form of this Commentary. The progress of Old Testament Criticism and of Oriental archaeological studies will doubtless modify particular statements in it, but the wide range of Dr Driver's knowledge, the accuracy of his scholarship and the sanity of his judgment cannot fail to secure a permanent value for all his work.
