Book excerpt: Due to western influence and advancement in technology and education, many aspects of authentic African culture are fast fading away. Some of the practices have changed over time and gradually loosing many of their initial elements. The tradition had been transmitted over time through oral tradition, but in modern times, oral tradition cannot be relied upon for a culture to be preserved for future generations. This reference book documents three main rites that are practiced by the Uvwie-Urhobo tribe in Nigeria. They include the rites of marriage, burial and chieftaincy. The what, why, how, and where questions regarding these rites are fully explained. The book also describes two main annual festivals celebrated by this group of people. The significance of each of the festival is noted. A description of the rite of female circumcision is included in this book, although it is thankfully no longer practiced. Unfortunately, it was a widely practiced tradition in Uvwie-Urhobo until the early1990s, when it was rightfully banned by the Nigerian Government. The chapter on female circumcision is included to record an unfortunate and painful tradition that once existed. There is a glossary of Uvwie-Urhobo terms used in the book. The glossary is followed by a brief information piece about Nigeria. It includes such topics as location, climate, economy, Government, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eyo is the most important traditional festival of Lagos State and has been held by Lagos Island indigenes for a few hundred years. Although social changes have evolved over the times, adjustments have been made to adapt the festival of masquerades to fit in with the modern era. Culture cannot remain static and must move with the times. Despite being rooted in tradition, the Eyo festival has witnessed slight changes as it has now become a full-blown carnival, full of pomp, pageantry, and gaiety, with splendid and theatrical displays of colourful costumes, regalia, music, acrobatic displays, and dancing. This is a more elaborate display and a far cry from the past events that took place centuries ago. The Adimu Orisa Play is now categorised as a tourist attraction in Lagos, Nigeria.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, in this thematic encyclopedia that covers everything from geography and economics to etiquette and pop culture. Part of Bloomsbury's Understanding Modern Nations series, this volume takes readers on a tour of contemporary Nigeria, helping them better understand the country and the many cultures, religions, and ethnicities that call it home. Chapters are organized thematically, examining a variety of topics, including geography, history, government, economics, religion, ethnic and social groups, gender, education, language, etiquette, food, literature and the arts, and pop culture. Each chapter begins with an overview essay, followed by a selection of encyclopedic entries that provide a more nuanced look at that facet of modern Nigeria. The main text is supplemented with sidebars that highlight additional high-interest topics. A collection of appendices rounds out the volume, offering short vignettes of daily life in the country, a glossary of key terms, statistical data, and a list of state holidays. Once a pawn of British colonialism, today Nigeria is a sovereign nation and key player on the world stage. Its vast oil resources have made it an international powerhouse and the wealthiest country on the African continent, yet political unrest and corruption, and ethnic and religious violence continue to threaten this prosperity. Nigeria is equally rich culturally, a nation where time-honored traditions mix with contemporary influences. Explore the diversity of modern Nigeria in this concise and accessible volume.
