Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The editor of this anthology addresses this literary omission by identifying seventeen Uruguayans deserving of recognition: Jorge Arbeleche, Nancy Bacelo, Washington Benavides, Mario Benedetti, Amanda Berenguer, Luis Bravo, Selva Casal, Rafael Courtoisie, Marosa Di Giorgio, Enrique Fierro, Alfredo Fressia, Saul Ibargoyen, Circe Maia, Jorge Meretta, Eduardo Milan, Alvaro Miranda, and Salvador Puig. The selection of these poets is based on extensive research and personal taste, but also because they have a recognized, sustained record of published books of poetry, especially during the 1990s; they have been favorably acknowledged for their work by peers and critics--through reviews and interviews in local news media; they have received recognition through national or international literary awards; and, for the most part, they are still active as poets in the new millennium. Furthermore, they comprise a representative cross section of diverse generations, perspectives, themes, and poetics extant in today's poetry in Uruguay." "Each of the poets is represented by a selection of original poems in Spanish to demonstrate the diversity of their expression and English translations to render them meaningful for both English and Spanish reading publics. The extensive bibliographies of primary and secondary sources of each poet is unprecedented; hopefully it will serve as a guide to encourage research on this neglected area of Spanish American literature. There is currently no canon of contemporary Uruguayan poets, but this project is intended to provide a meaningful step toward opening a discussion of such a canon."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INCESSANT BEAUTY is a feast for the senses and the mind. Ana Rossetti (from Cádiz, Spain), who began her literary career in the late seventies soon after dictator Francisco Franco’s death in 1975, is an award winning poet and writer. She became prominent among the many women poets who used the lifting of censorship to produce a fresh, often daring, body of poetry. INCESSANT BEAUTY offers to an English-speaking audience a first glimpse into Rossetti’s eclectic and voracious symbolic universe. Editor and translator Carmela Ferradáns has selected poems that offer a wide range of themes and poetic registers that span more than thirty years. Presented in chronological order, they vary from the playful, often cheeky, early poems for which she is well-known, to the more brooding meditations on transcendental human qualities, to the latest festive celebrations of the poetic word itself. In INCESSANT BEAUTY, Rossetti maps out displacement and exile in the fringes of the heart, bringing solidarity with one another to the core of our shared humanity.

Book excerpt: Exotic Territory: A Bilingual Anthology of Contemporary Paraguayan Poetry seeks to address a dearth of information in the English-speaking world about Paraguayan poetry of the past forty years. The twelve outstanding poets included hereJos Luis Appleyard, Moncho Azuaga, Gladys Carmagnola, Susy Delgado, Oscar Ferreiro, Rene Ferrer, Joaqun Morales, Amanda Pedrozo, Jacobo Rauskin, Elvio Romero, Ricardo de La Vega, Carlos Villagra Marsalrepresent a wide diversity of themes, styles, and perspectives in this little-known nation. Most of them have published extensively, have been recognized through literary awards and inclusion in national and international anthologies, and continue writing today. To contextualize the poets and their poetry for readers unfamiliar with Paraguay, the Introduction provides a brief background of its geography, history, government, economy, society, and artistic milieu. Following that is a wide selection of representative poems published previously in Spanish, with translations in English on facing pages. The book concludes with a brief biographical sketch of each poet, followed by an unprecedented and extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources intended to encourage those readers who might want to pursue further reading or research on any poet of interest.

Book excerpt: Volcanic Reflections: A Bilingual Anthology of Contemporary Ecuadorian Poetry is the third in a series of books that aspires to address a dearth of information in the English-speaking world about South American poetry of the past thirty years. The nineteen outstanding poets included here represent a wide diversity of themes, styles, and perspectives in one of South Americas smaller nations. All of them have published extensively, have been recognized through literary awards and inclusion in national and international anthologies, and continue writing and publishing today. For readers unfamiliar with Ecuador, the Introduction provides a brief background of its geography, history, politics, economy, and society. This is followed by an ample selection of representative poems published previously in Spanish, with translations in English on facing pages. The book concludes with a brief biographical sketch of each poet and an unprecedented bibliography of primary and secondary sources for those readers who might want to pursue further reading or research on any poet of interest. Contemporary Uruguayan Poetry: A Bilingual Anthology and Exotic Territory: A Bilingual Anthology of Contemporary Paraguayan Anthology are two companion volumes that offer similar exposure to poetry that deserves to be better known in the English-speaking world.

Book excerpt: This rich sampling of Spanish poetry, prose, and drama includes more than seventy selections from the works of more than forty writers, from the anonymous author of the great medieval epic The Poem of the Cid to such 20th-century masters as Miguel de Unamuno. The original Spanish text of each work appears with an excellent English translation on the facing page. The anthology begins with carefully selected passages from such medieval classics as The Book of Good Love by the Archpriest of Hita and Spain's first great prose work, the stories of Count Lucanor by Juan Manuel. Works by writers of the Spanish Renaissance follow, among them poems by the Marqués de Santillana and excerpts from the great dialogue novel La Celestina by Fernando de Rojas. Spain's Golden age, ca. 1550-1650, an era which produced its great writers, is represented by the mystical poems of St. Teresa, passages from Cervantes' Don Quixote and scenes from Tirso de Molina's The Love-Rogue, the drama that introduced the character of Don Juan to the world, along with other well-known works of the period. A cavalcade of stirring poems, plays and prose selections represent Spain's rare literary achievements of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The translations were chosen for their accuracy and fidelity to the originals. Among the translators are Lord Byron, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edward FitzGerald and John Masefield. As a treasury of masterly writing, as a guide for the student who wants to improve his or her language skills and as a compact survey of Spanish literature, this excellent anthology will provide hours of pleasure and fruitful study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology includes translations of a number of original poems from each of the ten collections of poetry published to date by Spanish poet Ana Maria Fagundo. Its goal is to provide a representative sample of Fagundo's work for an English audience. With the basic tenet of phenomenology as scaffold, the introduction of this anthology elucidates Fagundo's poetic writing as a process whereby the abstract is transformed into a concrete experience through the speaker's own self and body. From Brotes/Buds in 1965 until Trasterrado Marzo/March Beyond in 1999, Fagundo's poetry is an ongoing dialogue with the poetic word. Fagundo's poetic speaker looks into essences, but only in order to reintegrate them into existence. There is no Truth or Beauty or Good out there for which this poet strives, but a truth that each poet articulates in his or her own way. Hers is an aesthetic enterprise, which implies the ethical obligation to affirm life. Candelas Gala is Professor and Chair of the Department of Romance Languages at Wake Forest University.
