Book Synopsis The Politics of Regulation by : A. Young
Download or read book The Politics of Regulation written by A. Young and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-03-13 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The privatization of the utilities by the Conservative governments of the 1980s and 1990s was a major shift in public policy. It was also a huge experiment in reinventing government, since the newly privatized companies were regulated by high-profile individuals. Frequently criticized and often controversial, the regulators wield enormous power over a large sector of the British economy. This book tells the story of their first fifteen years or so controlling prices, introducing competition, refereeing mergers and sometimes clashing with the government.

Download or read book Documents of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights - Volume 1, 1987-1998 written by Rachel Murray and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2001-11-06 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourteen years since its establishment, the work of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights has not received the attention that should have been paid to its important contributions towards the promotion and protection of human rights in Africa. The aim of this publication is to provide not only the basic documents, but also the less well known material related to the jurisprudence emanating from the consideration of communications. This volume therefore includes, amongst other material, the twelve activity reports adopted by the Commission, resolutions, and final communiqués from the sessions. This is the first attempt to reproduce comprehensively the many documents of the Commission adopted since its inception in 1987. It will be an essential reference for academics, students, and practitioners. The publication is produced in collaboration with the African Society for International and Comparative Law, the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria and Interights in London.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the report is to highlight what the Committee felt were the most important and controversial measures of the Bill, to lay out the arguments for and against, and to reach a tentative conclusion in time for the second reading debate. The Committee concluded that the Bill should be given a second reading, but it will need close examination in committee. Doubt is expressed whether a bill of this length and with major implications for civil liberties should be passed through the Commons in such a short period and with so little time for detailed examination. The legislation will pass through the Commons in two weeks with only three days of debate by all MPs. The report recommends that the Government should seek an alternative measure, in consultation with other European partners, which avoids the need to exercise the power of indefinite detention. It expresses reluctant acceptance that there may be a small category of persons who will have to be detained, but states that this should only be exercised as a last resort, for those who cannot be prosecuted, extradited or deported. The report recommends that a "sunset" clause should apply to the immigration and asylum provisions of the Bill, which would mean detention powers would lapse after five years. A full parliamentary debate would then be needed for an annual renewal order, rather than a 90 minute debate in a standing committee. The report also states that there is insufficient evidence to justify the extension of the law of incitement to include religious hatred, as it is doubtful that this will work in practice.
