Download or read book The Sword of St. Michael written by Guy LoFaro and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2011-08-30 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 82nd Airborne Division spent more time in combat than any other American airborne unit of World War II, and its fierce battlefield tenacity earned it the reputation of one of the finest divisions in the world. Yet no comprehensive history of the 82nd during World War II exists today. The Sword of St. Michaelcorrects this significant gap in the literature, offering a lively narrative and thoroughly researched history of the famous division. Author Guy LoFaro, himself a distinguished officer of the division, interweaves the voices of soldiers at both ends of the chain of command, from Eisenhower to the lowest private. Making extensive use of primary sources, LoFaro offers a work of insightful analysis, situating the division's exploits in a strategic and operational context.

Alvin York was one its soldiers) found themselves in the thick of the action, something that would become familiar to them for the rest of the war. Heavy combat followed on the Italian mainland. Then came the main event of the war: D-Day!

They gained undying fame with their drop into Normandy on the eve of D-Day. Later actions included Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge, and the final Allied advance into Germany, where the 82nd was chosen to occupy especially important positions. Each Spearhead title includes an evaluation of the units combat effectiveness as seen by the unit, its opponents and subsequent researchers, and a research section including a bibliography and a listing of museums, websites, re-enactment groups and memorials.

Book excerpt: "Just when you thought everything about the 82nd Airborne Division in World War II had been published, author Ben Powers delivers Never a Dull Moment, The 80th Airborne Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in World War II. Excellently researched and written, this powerful book fills a critical void about a lesser known, but so very important unit in the 82nd." — Colonel Mark C. “Plug” Vlahos, USAF-Retired, USAAF Troop Carrier and Glider Operations Historian and Author Most modern books and films glamorize World War II airborne soldiers as troopers leaping into the night to descend by parachute into combat. Much less often considered is the role of glider forces. Glider troops lacked the panache and special distinctions of paratroopers, despite their critical role in airborne warfare. Likewise, World War II ground combat is characterized as a combined arms fight of infantry and armor, backed up with field artillery; by comparison the role played by specialized, supporting arms has received scant attention. The 80th AAA Battalion was a glider outfit, providing antiaircraft defense and antitank capability to the division’s three infantry regiments as battlefield conditions dictated. Elements of the battalion fought in Italy, Normandy, Holland and the Battle of the Bulge, making combat glider assaults during both Operation Neptune and Operation Market Garden. The exploits of the men of the 80th tend to be obscured as commanders maneuvered the batteries wherever their special skills were needed on the battlefield, with no regiment to call a permanent home. The 80th AAA battalion was a hybrid unit. While its members were considered Coast Artillery (the branch responsible for defending ground formations from air attack during WWII), they fought alongside parachute and glider infantry, most often providing direct fire, anti-armor support with 57mm/6 pounder cannons. While field artillery, both parachute and glider, established their gunlines some distance behind infantry units to provide indirect fire support, the men of the 80th fought face to face with the enemy, alongside their infantry brothers.

This book was released on 2022-06-04T22:59:00Z with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The mission of Company A was to seize and hold La Fière bridge that spans the road west of Ste. Mère-Eglise and runs over the Merderet River to Cauquigny and Amfreville. This account is a personal memoir, but it is also very much about my comrades in arms, the heroic members of the 507 and 508 PIRs and the 325 Glider Infantry Regiment. #2 The author’s fellow soldiers did not write about history, they made it. They rarely talked or wrote about combat during the war. The author was 17 when he landed with the 82nd at Casablanca, North Africa in May 1943, and 18 when he made the 505th PIR combat jump at Salerno, Italy, in September 1943. #3 There were some exceptions to the rule of silence among the veterans. For example, Colonel Roy Creek, who was a captain on D-Day in the 82nd Airborne Division, wrote his recollections of the battle on June 6-7 for the Chef-du-Pont bridge and causeway as an assignment at the Officer Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, two years after the war. #4 The heroism of soldiers like Pfc. Lenold Peterson, a trooper of Swedish origin from Minnesota, speaks volumes for itself. Peterson was a bazooka gunner who stood up and knocked out two German tanks at a critical moment during the fighting at La Fière causeway.
