Book excerpt: Free clinics and student-run clinics are an essential part of America's health care safety net. In community after community, pro bono and student-run health clinics have sprung up over the past 30 years, providing critically needed care to medically underserved populations. Free Clinics is a mosaic formed by accounts of such clinics around the United States. These wide-ranging narratives—from urban to rural, from primary care to behavioral health care—provide examples that will assist other communities seeking to find the model that best fits their needs. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has improved access to health care for many Americans, but millions remain and will remain uninsured or underinsured. Free clinics provide non-emergency care to those in need. Nationwide, professionals can be found offering volunteer services at these clinics. Contributors to this volume—typically people with personal familiarity (as clinicians or area residents) with the clinics they write about—cover a variety of topics, including a review of the literature, data-driven accounts of clinic usage, and ethical guidelines for student-run clinics. They describe the motivations of clinic staff, the day-to-day work of a family nurse practitioner working in clinics and teaching at a university, the challenges and rewards of providing health care for homeless people, and more. Student-run clinics are the topic of the second section: in addition to providing care to a small subset of those in need, student-run clinics are an important venue for training future clinicians and helping the seeds of altruism with which many enter their professions to germinate. Free Clinics will be useful to policymakers, students and faculty in public health and health policy programs, and clinicians and students who are embarking on launching new clinics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health Care Ethics is a comprehensive study of significant issues affecting health care and the ethics of health care from the perspective of Catholic theology. It aims to help Christian, and especially Catholic, health care professionals solve concrete problems in terms of principles rooted in scripture and tested by individual experience; however, its basis in real medical experience makes this book a valuable resource for anyone with a general interest in health care ethics. This fifth edition, which includes important contributions by Jean deBlois, C.S.J., considers everyday ethical questions and dilemmas in clinical care and deals more deeply with issues of women's health, mental health, sexual orientation, artificial reproduction, and the new social issues in health care. The authors devote special attention to the various ethical theories currently in use in the United States while clearly presenting a method of ethical decision making based in the Catholic tradition. They discuss the needs of the human person, outlining what it means to be human, both as an individual and as part of a community. This volume has been significantly updated to include new discussions of recent clinical innovations and theoretical issues that have arisen in the field: • the Human Genome Project• efforts to control sexual selection of infants• efforts to genetically modify the human genotype and phenotype• the development of palliative care as a medical specialty• the acceptance of non-heart beating persons as organ donors• embryo development and stem cell research• reconstructive and cosmetic surgery• nutrition and obesity• medical mistakes• the negative effects of managed care on the patient-physician relationship• recent papal allocution regarding care of patients in a persistent vegetative state and palliative care for dying patients

Finarelli, Jr., PhD How many physicians make a health system? The Hospital Executive's Guide to Physician Staffing helps hospital CEOs answer a question that healthcare analysts and policymakers have debated for nearly 30 years: How many physicians do you need? The Hospital Executive's Guide to Physician Staffing challenges accepted beliefs and practices about the science of physician staffing. Insightful and data-rich, this unique resource guides hospital executives in creating a staffing model for physician services by outlining proven strategies for determining community physician need and fulfilling those needs appropriately. This timely and informative book presents practical approaches for engaging different types of physicians--the hospital dependent, hospital independent, and full-time office-based--in various markets, including those facing a shortage and rural communities. Complete with benchmarking tables and other resources, The Hospital Executive's Guide to Physician Staffing includes sections on: Physician supply and demand--a macro view Assessing physician need Measuring physician contribution How many physicians make a health system Recruitment and retention strategies The executive's role in recruitment Planning for an uncertain future Build a quality organization, and the doctors will come Central to the underlying philosophy of the book is the notion that hospitals must "attract the best by being the best" and includes strategies executives can use in achieving that goal. Who will benefit from this book? Hospital CEO President CFO COO Medical staff director Director of physician relations Praise for this book "The Hospital Executive's Guide to Physician Staffing is a valuable resource for any hospital facing the difficult task of determining the right number and mix of physicians." --Jerry Senne, President, Holmes Regional Medical Center "...effective tool kit for any planning executive trying to meet their organization's goals or community's needs with successful physician strategies...It is a must read for those interested in exceptional accuracy in their forecasting, and those treading into physician supply and demand metrics where the ultimate recommendations will be a future P & L you need to defend." --Elizabeth Jaekle, Vice President, Business Development, Crozer-Keystone Health System "I recommend this book for all healthcare executives who are planning for the future." --Walter H. Book excerpt: There is little debate that health care in the United States is in need of reform. But where should those improvements begin? With insurers? Drug makers? The doctors themselves? In Big Med, David Dranove and Lawton Robert Burns argue that we’re overlooking the most ubiquitous cause of our costly and underperforming system: megaproviders, the expansive health care organizations that have become the face of American medicine. Your local hospital is likely part of one. Your doctors, too. And the megaproviders are bad news for your health and your wallet. Drawing on decades of combined expertise in health care consolidation, Dranove and Burns trace Big Med’s emergence in the 1990s, followed by its swift rise amid false promises of scale economies and organizational collaboration. In the decades since, megaproviders have gobbled up market share and turned independent physicians into salaried employees of big bureaucracies, while delivering on none of their early promises. For patients this means higher costs and lesser care. Meanwhile, physicians report increasingly low morale, making it all but impossible for most systems to implement meaningful reforms. In Big Med, Dranove and Burns combine their respective skills in economics and management to provide a nuanced explanation of how the provision of health care has been corrupted and submerged under consolidation. They offer practical recommendations for improving competition policies that would reform megaproviders to actually achieve the efficiencies and quality improvements they have long promised. This is an essential read for understanding the current state of the health care system in America—and the steps urgently needed to create an environment of better care for all of us.
