Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever so often a book comes along that I feel should have been written years ago, and this book is one of them. As a Christian who found faith in Nigeria in the 80s, I was intrigued by stories about 'God Generals", those men and women that led 20th century revivals across the world (most of them in the West). Now I have in my hands, a book that shares some of the stories of some of my fellow countrymen who shaped the faith landscape in Nigeria. I am really impressed with the diversity of the leaders identified and the depth of the research undertaken. This book, in my view, should be a must read for anyone interested in origins of Pentecostalism in Nigeria. Keno Ogbo, Co-editor, The Black Church in the 21st Century "The Lord joined us to the ministry of Benson Idahosa for 20 years and we saw firsthand the reality and power of the gospel in Africa that has touched the world. The Lord's sovereign work in the continent is going to impact the globe for generations to come. Thank God for the African church of Jesus Christ. Millions of strong and faithful believers are coming forth at this critical time as God builds His church." Dr Kent & Ruth Hodge, President of Christian Faith Institute, Jos, Nigeria. Christianity has been recognised to be a growing religion in Sub Sahara Africa. The expression of Christianity that is expanding in Africa is Pentecostalism. One reason for this growth is the renewal factor which has engulfed the whole continent. Nigeria is one of the countries that has and is still experiencing revival that is contributing to local and global Christianity. What is the origin of Pentecostalism in Nigeria? What contributions did the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa make to the Pentecostal scene in Africa? Why is RCCG one of the fastest growing Churches in the World? This book considers the history of Pentecostalism in Nigeria by looking at the pioneering efforts of men and women who laid the foundation of the Movement.

Book excerpt: Crashed Realities? explores the lived realities women Pentecostals encounter in male-founded Pentecostal churches. Idumwonyi demonstrates the gender dynamics at play in Nigerian Pentecostalism by exploring the ‘drama’ that played out in the wake of the nomination of the first woman Pentecostal archbishop in Nigeria and the subsequent attempt to 'erase' her from a significant leadership position and the pages of history. This case underscores how Pentecostalism, which presents as egalitarian, engages in and perpetuates gender disparity, revealing the realities that are crashed every day. This book further explores the profound ambiguities that result from an underlying commitment to patriarchy, making the calls to inclusivity illogical. In contrast, she proposes the advantages of the Pentecost Experience as favorable background to gender inclusivity and, in turn, human flourishing.

Engaging such wide-ranging topics as gender violence, globalization, Westernization, peacebuilding, development, Pentecostalism, urban missiology, theological education, and African Christianity in Europe, this volume ambitiously bridges the gap between academic and practitioner perspectives, engaging both theological discourse and the hands-on reality of how God’s mission is taking shape in Africa and beyond. This book offers an empowering look at the work God is accomplishing in and through the African church.

The book is an attempt to understand the operational framework of present-day Yorùbá Pentecostal churches and their music ministries through the lens of the MFM church. The author also investigates the keywords often used by congregants to describe their emotional response to certain rites within the liturgy.

Book excerpt: This book will surely save many young adults from unnecessary heartbreak. Besides coming into a relationship with God, there is hardly any decision that is of more significance and long-lasting implications than the decision on who to marry. With the increasing misrepresentation of marriage through popular culture, young people are desperate for trustworthy models and principles to guide them through the waters of marriage-in-view relationships, hence this book. Joseph and Anu, through their love story, draw young people to engage with the tested and timeless countercultural principles upon which the institution of marriage is established. Written in a warm and conversational style, the book will teach you: guidelines on discovering who to marry; answers to questions about dating, courtship, sex and weddings; and principles for building a Godly marriage. Joseph and Anu’s Wedding Testimonies “Of all weddings in bible times, the wedding at Cana in Galilee stood out, not because of the popular stuffs that makes a wedding, but because of the platform it created for Jesus to be glorified. But while I was not at the wedding of Cana in Galilee, I am excited that I was able to witness a similar occurrence being re-enacted in our times. You two planned to have a simple wedding but the Lord made it glorious. You wanted to have a quiet wedding but the heavens noised it both home and abroad. Your wedding is now an inspiration to a lot. It has become many people's prayer point. It is an envy to some. It is a delight to the Almighty. Your wife grasped her first class, and you grasped her first kiss and all . . . There is so much to learn already from your wedding, thus, your marriage is definitely going to become a role model.” — Oluwayimika Adelegan | US Army “God is speaking to my generation through you. I hope we are listening. Oh gosh! You are bringing forth the cornerstone with screams of 'grace' 'grace' to it! The Dream is True, brother, the Dream is True! I'm over the top with joy. Congratulations and God bless you and Anu!” — Adebola Deji-Kurunmi | ED, Ideation Hub Africa & President, DIW “I do not know both of you personally, … but I can tell that this marriage will last a lifetime … Simplicity and moderation in all things; the beauty of friendship and faith personified and evident, even for a stranger like me to see. May the good LORD bless your union and may it be the ultimate example for everyone who seek the true joy that marriage brings. Happy Married Life.” — Akinwale Ekundayo | Managing Partner, Cheret Creatives “One of the most beautiful stories I've read on the internet thus far.” — Tejumade | Dir. of Marketing & Publicity, TedxIsaleGeneral2016 “You guys have redefined what true love represents and a godly trust that transcends all barriers. We celebrate your union. God is sending a message through you two to our generation. To Him be the glory.” — Abiola Isawumi

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powerful Devices studies spiritual warfare performances as an apparatus for disestablishing structures of power and knowledge, and establishing righteousness in their stead. Drawing on performance studies’ emphasis on radicality and breaking of social norms as devices of social transformation, the book demonstrates how Christian groups with dominant cultural power but who perceive themselves as embattled wield the ideas of performance activism. Combining religious studies with ethnography, Powerful Devices explores Nigerian Pentecostals and US Evangelicals’ praxis of transnational spiritual warfare. By closely studying spiritual warfare prayers as a “device,” Powerful Devices shows how the rituals of prayer enable an apprehension of time, paradigms of self-enhancement, and the subversion of politics and authority. A critical intervention, Powerful Devices explores charismatic Christianity’s relationship to science and secular authority, technology and temporality, neoliberalism, and reactionary ideology.

Book excerpt: The question of contextual theology and its relevance to Africa in this time of globalization, whereby there are rampant uncontrolled changes in cultures, technologies, economic policies, and even people's religious lives, is very urgent. How is contextual theology relevant in the ever-changing contexts of the church in Africa? Indeed, there are a number of challenges which contextual theology faces within the church in Africa, which need to be addressed contextually. Some such challenges include poverty, rampant violence, homosexuality, alcoholism, the resurgence of prosperity gospel materialistic prophets and incurable illnesses like Ebola, HIV and AIDS, and the current coronavirus (COVID-19). However, which context in Africa? Context in Africa, as in other parts of the world, is always in flux; it is complex and fluid. There is no permanent context. The experience of Jesus in such a changing context needs to be rediscovered depending on what transpires in each particular place at a particular time. This book addresses some of the overarching challenges that face contextual theology and how such challenges should be addressed by the church in Africa in contemporary ever-changing context for it to be relevant in Africa. It also highlights the need to move from liberation and inculturation theologies to reconstruction theology in dealing with the challenges of the current church. Hence, the book is important to students and scholars engaging in practical, systematic, biblical, and contextual theologies in all their branches.

Book excerpt: Introducing an emerging academic field known as African British Theologies, this publication explores the significant presence of African Christianity in Britain. Featuring contributions from twelve scholarly African pastors engaged in ministry and theology in Britain, this book is a unique expression of theology from African Christians, contextualizing the gospel for a multicultural British society. Under three key areas of missiology, contextual constructive theology and transformative practical theology the contributors interact with topics such as reverse missiology, African pneumatology, prosperity gospel, and urban mission. This book rigorously examines new contexts of Christianity and articulates new theological perspectives that are required to understand twenty-first-century ministry, not only in urban Britain, but also across the world.

Book excerpt: Nigeria has become the arena of one of the most remarkable religious movements of recent times, reflecting the shift in the global center of Christianity from the North to the South. This book tells the story of one sector of this movement from its root in the Nigerian civil war to the turn of the new millenium. It describes a revival that occurred among the Igbo people of Eastern Nigeria and the new Pentecostal churches it generated and documents the changes that have occurred as the movement has responded to global flows and local demands. As such, it explores the nature of revivalist and Pentecostal experience but does so against the backdrop of local socio-political and economic developments, such as decolonization and civil war, as well broader processes, such as modernization and globalization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prophecy of Joel that God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh in the last days confirms the current move of the Holy Ghost all over the world. It is the main force behind the great explosion in church growth, especially in Africa, Latin America, and Southern Asia. In Nigeria today, the wind of change is blowing across various church denominations. The baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues which were once frowned at is now a common phenomenon, even among the Catholics, Anglicans, and Evangelicals. This has revolutionized the mode of worship and made it vibrant and dynamic through spiritual songs, clapping of hands, dance, and loud praises to God. This book is a panorama of sorts on Pentecostal churches. I sincerely believe that it will serve to educate believers who intend to understand some basic facts about the early Pentecostal church denominations in Nigeria. It will also serve as a quick reference for information on Pentecostal churches. However, the book was not written to include names of all church denominations in the Pentecostal circle but to trace the roots of many of them. Without mincing words, most of the leaders in Pentecostal denominations in Nigeria today have their roots in the list of church denominations in this book. I strongly believe that this book will do more than just recount history; it will re-direct our vision, bring significant changes into our misguided orientation, and re-invigorate us for greater spiritual attainment. More so, it will serve as a spiritual memento and a touchstone prophecy of Joel that God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh in the last days confirms the current move of the Holy Ghost all over the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the changing dynamics of Christianity in an African context, it is important to recall Church History. There's much we can learn from the long history of Christian Faith. However, it appears we are living in a time where we are more ignorant of Church History than at any other point since the 16th-century reformation. This book brings its reader up to speed with Nigerian Pentecostal History. This book endeavours to answer some important questions: How has the belief of a handful of persecuted and frightened people in Jerusalem over two thousand years ago expanded into a worldwide faith, stronger today than ever before? How did Nigerian Pentecostalism, a powerful force of Global Pentecostalism, begin? How did Assemblies of God, the world's largest Pentecostal denomination start in Nigeria? What are the fresh, spiritual, and thought-provoking insights about one of its two core native leaders, Udom Akpan? Nigerian Pentecostalism: A Brief History and the Untold Story of Assemblies of God in Nigeria present a concise classical account of these spiritually motivating events. This book concisely narrates the evolution of the Church from its early era through to the missionary endeavours in Nigeria, concluding with the emergence of Pentecostalism in Nigeria with particular attention on Assemblies of God. This book is well researched and excellently written with direct references to archival records, which are not until now available to Nigerian readers. Prof. Matthews Ojo (Church Historian, OAU, Ile-Ife) This book is a comprehensive account of the influence the Assemblies of God has had upon the reach of Pentecostalism in Nigeria and further afield. As a UK-based church leader, I write as one who has been enriched by this book. Pastor Howard Williams (Alive Church, Lincoln) I strongly endorse this book and recommend it to scholars and churchmen who do ministry in contemporary global and local contexts. It is informative, educating and faith-building. Prof. (Rev) Dapo Asaju (Bishop Theologian, Anglican Church of Nigeria) The arguments put forward in the book and the volume of research, information, and data presented therein is a testament to the work's authenticity - well researched, articulated and organized by the author. Book excerpt: This book examines the contributions, both intentional and unintentional, of Nigerian Pentecostal churches and NGOs to development, studying their development practices broadly in relation to the intersecting spheres of politics, economics, health, education, human rights, and peacebuilding. In sub-Saharan Africa, Pentecostalism is fast becoming the dominant expression of Christianity, but while the growth and civic engagement of these churches has been well documented, their role in development has received less attention. The Nigerian Pentecostal landscape is one of the most vibrant in Africa. Churches are increasingly assuming more prominent roles as they seek to address the social and moral ills of contemporary society, often in fierce competition with Islam for dominance in Nigerian public space. Some scholars suggest that the combination of an enchanted worldview, an emphasis on miracles and prosperity teaching, and a preoccupation with evangelism discourages effective political engagement and militates against development. However, Nigerian Pentecostalism and Development argues that there is an emerging movement within contemporary Nigerian Pentecostalism which is becoming increasingly active in development practices. This book goes on to explore the increasingly transnational approach that churches take, often seeking to build multicultural congregations around the globe, for instance in Britain and the United States. Nigerian Pentecostalism and Development: Spirit, Power, and Transformation will be of considerable interest to scholars and students concerned with the intersection between religion and development, and to development practitioners and policy-makers working in the region.
