Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the latest iteration of this crucial exhibition, always a barometer of contemporary American art The 2022 Whitney Biennial is accompanied by this landmark volume. Each of the Biennial's participants is represented by a selected exhibition history, a bibliography, and imagery complemented by a personal statement or interview that foregrounds the artist's own voice. Essays by the curators and other contributors elucidate themes of the exhibition and discuss the participants. The 2022 Biennial's two curators, David Breslin and Adrienne Edwards, are known for their close collaboration with living artists. Coming after several years of seismic upheaval in and beyond the cultural, social, and political landscapes, this catalogue will offer a new take on the storied institution of the Biennial while continuing to serve--as previous editions have--as an invaluable resource on present-day trends in contemporary art in the United States.

The exhibition and book spotlight a pivotal moment in the recent history of art. Chronicling the "long" 1990s between 1989 and 2001-from the fall of the Berlin Wall to 9/11-"Come As You Are" examines how the art of this period both reflected and helped shape the dramatic societal events of the era, when the combined forces of new technologies and globalization gave rise to the accelerated international art world that we know today"--

Book excerpt: Sightlines is an architectural term meaning what you can see from where you stand - it's a question of perspective. This collection of images and words, gathered in conjunction with the international Sightlines symposium in Edmonton, Canada, in 1997, reveals the printmaker and the print from many angles. Including more than 250 color images representing more than 120 artists and a text by more than a dozen contributors, Sightlines opens up a rare view of contemporary printmaking around the world.

Book excerpt: Since its inauguration in 1932, the Whitney Biennial has showcased contemporary artistic innovation, becoming a highly anticipated event in the art world. The 2010 Biennial is curated by Francesco Bonami and Gary Carrion-Murayari and features works by approximately 55 artists working in a variety of media and practices. Uniquely, this catalogue serves as both a handsome accompaniment to the 2010 exhibition and an insightful exploration of the significance of this acclaimed and often controversial event throughout its history. In addition to presenting full-color reproductions of the selected artists’ recent work, the curators have prepared a joint essay on the 2010 exhibition, and a group of writers contributed brief entries on the represented artists’ techniques, influences, and recent work. A detailed appendix features a short text on the significance of the museum’s annual and biennial exhibitions in the context of the museum’s history and broader collection, as well as photographs of previous installations, facsimiles of historical reviews, and a chronological list of artists included in past annuals and biennials. Thumbnails of all previous catalogue covers are also included, positioning each Biennial as a snapshot of artistic practice at a particular moment. Book excerpt: In 1995, Mike Kelley devised the Educational Complex, an amalgam of every school he attended and of the house he grew up in, "with all the parts I couldn't remember left out"--a total environment, "sort of like the model of a Modernist community college." The blind spots in this model represent forgotten ("repressed") zones, and so are reconceived by Kelley as sites of institutional abuse, for which specific traumas were devised (each having their own video and sculptural component). For Kelley, this work marks the beginning of a series of projects in which pseudo-autobiography, repressed-memory syndrome and the reinterpretation of previous pieces become the tools for a poetic deconstruction of such complexes and the way we interact with and narrate them. Educational Complex Onwards, 1995-2008 is the first book to collect these works. Each project within the series is extensively documented by artist's texts and reference material, while essays by Diedrich Diederichsen, Howard Singerman and Anne Pontégnie examine the place of this body of work within Kelley's oeuvre.

Book excerpt: This innovative new history examines in-depth how the growing popularity of large-scale international survey exhibitions, or 'biennials', has influenced global contemporary art since the 1950s. Provides a comprehensive global history of biennialization from the rise of the European star-curator in the 1970s to the emergence of mega-exhibitions in Asia in the 1990s Introduces a global array of case studies to illustrate the trajectory of biennials and their growing influence on artistic expression, from the Biennale de la Méditerranée in Alexandria, Egypt in 1955, the second Havana Biennial of 1986, New York’s Whitney Biennial in 1993, and the 2002 Documenta11 in Kassel, to the Gwangju Biennale of 2014 Explores the evolving curatorial approaches to biennials, including analysis of the roles of sponsors, philanthropists and biennial directors and their re-shaping of the contemporary art scene Uses the history of biennials as a means of illustrating and inciting further discussions of globalization in contemporary art

Book excerpt: Meditations on space, art, war, death and religion merge with the homocrotic in John O'Reilly's intensely personal photo transformations. For this artist, montage has proved the richest medium for personal allegory, and the formal and symbolic evolution of O'Reilly's work corresponds to his own awakening self discovery. His working methods of cutting and pasting mirror the energy inherent in de-constructing and reconstructing the psyche. Alternately, the physical merging of iconic Others enables their psychic incorporation into the Self. Over twenty-five years of part-time employment as an art therapist have rendered O'Reilly equally interested in art and psychology, and willing to use his deepest obsessions, fetishes, and fears as source material for his tiny assemblies of magic.
