Book Synopsis Welsh Americans by : Ronald L. Lewis
Download or read book Welsh Americans written by Ronald L. Lewis and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1890, more than 100,000 Welsh-born immigrants resided in the United States. A majority of them were skilled laborers from the coal mines of Wales who had been recruited by American mining companies. Readily accepted by American society, Welsh immigrants experienced a unique process of acculturation. In the first history of this exceptional community, Ronald Lewis explores how Welsh immigrants made a significant contribution to the development of the American coal industry and how their rapid and successful assimilation affected Welsh American culture. Lewis describes how Welsh immigrants brought their national churches, fraternal orders and societies, love of literature and music, and, most important, their own language. Yet unlike eastern and southern Europeans and the Irish, the Welsh--even with their "foreign" ways--encountered no apparent hostility from the Americans. Often within a single generation, Welsh cultural institutions would begin to fade and a new "Welsh American" identity developed. True to the perspective of the Welsh themselves, Lewis's analysis adopts a transnational view of immigration, examining the maintenance of Welsh coal-mining culture in the United States and in Wales. By focusing on Welsh coal miners, Welsh Americans illuminates how Americanization occurred among a distinct group of skilled immigrants and demonstrates the diversity of the labor migrations to a rapidly industrializing America.

Book Synopsis Nationhood, Providence, and Witness by : Carys Moseley
Download or read book Nationhood, Providence, and Witness written by Carys Moseley and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2013-11-28 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this eloquently argued work Carys Moseley provides an original angle of criticism on the issue of nationhood and Christianity, asserting that Christianity must relate to nationhood as the nation structure is part of God's plan for humanity. The book addresses three major themes in the field of theology and nationhood. The first is that anti-nationalism and anti-Zionism are often two sides of the same coin, and involve taking leave of a providential reading of the Bible as well as a willingness to understand history in broadly providential terms. The second is that such an approach tends to involve a reluctance to recognise subordinated Gentile nations, especially those that have lost independence. Moseley studies the work of four theologians - Reinhold Niebuhr, Rowan Williams, John Milbank and Karl Barth - to examine the difference between nationhood and statehood. She provides a perspective on Wales as a stateless nation, as an example of a Gentile parallel to Israel. Thirdly, Moseley links social theorists to the theologians to explore their affinities. Niebuhr is paired with Mark Juergensmeyer, and Rowan Williams is juxtaposed to the debate between Adrian Hastings and Anthon Smith. Nationhood, Recognition and Providence will interest anyone concerned with nationhood and Israel in protestant theology, and offers unique insights into stateless nations from the Welsh-born author's perspective.

Book Synopsis Tracing Your Welsh Ancestors by : Beryl Evans
Download or read book Tracing Your Welsh Ancestors written by Beryl Evans and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-05-30 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few previous publications have focused on Welsh family history, and none have provided a comprehensive guide to the genealogical information available and where to find it. That is why the publication of Beryl Evans's new Welsh family history handbook is such a significant event in the field. Her detailed, accessible, authoritative guide will be essential reading and reference for anyone who is eager to research ancestors from Wales. She describes the key archival sources and shows how the development of new technology, the internet in particular, has made them so much easier to explore. Drawing on her long experience of family history work, she gives clear practical advice on how to start a research project, and she sketches in the outlines of Welsh history, Welsh surnames and place-names and the Welsh language. But the main body of her book is devoted to identifying the variety of sources researchers can consult the archive repositories, including The National Library of Wales, civil records of all kinds, the census, parish registers, wills, the records of churches, chapels, schools, businesses, tax offices and courts, and the wide range of printed records. Beryl Evans's handbook will be a basic text for researchers of Welsh descent and for anyone who is keen to learn about Welsh history
