These principles are derived from numerous research studies from a wide range of areas within psychology, as well as from the authors’ many years of experience as college professors, researchers, and student advisors. This book closes the gap between scientific knowledge and its application to college success. Topics include information processing and learning; critical thinking and decision making; identifying and achieving goals; managing time, money and energy; reading and writing effectively; reducing test anxiety; knowing thyself; and preparing for a career. The latest research findings are presented. It is a valuable guide for freshman, whether coming right out of high school or after a hiatus of years working and/or taking care of a family. This book is particularly appropriate for minority and first generation college students who may have fewer mentors to help them along the college path. Each chapter offers case studies of successful students to serve as role models. The focus of the book is on the practical application of the strategies in the student’s daily life within a framework of flexibility, integrity, and balance.

It guides them to develop the attitudes, frames of mind, and beliefs that can help them achieve a life compatible with their personality, values, and interests. Knowing that many students are struggling financially, the authors of the book have made it affordable with the paperback and e-book one twentieth of the cost of other student success books currently on the market and even less expensive than some open source books. The focus of the book is the individual student. Based on their many years of teaching psychology and advising and mentoring students, the authors provide beginning students with "the rules of the game" to help make college a smoother transition. The goal of the book is to help the student find out who they are and what they have to offer the world in order to select a major and future career path. This book encourages students to visualize their goals and then to have a step-by-step plan and the self-control and grit in order to achieve them. 110 Strategies for Success in College and Life is a valuable guide for freshman, whether coming right out of high school or after a hiatus of years working and/or taking care of a family. This book is particularly appropriate for minority and first generation college students who may have fewer mentors to help them along the college path. Each chapter offers case studies of successful students to serve as role models. The focus of the book is on the development of the student by providing them with skills necessary for both their academic life and their personal life within a framework of flexibility, integrity, enjoyment, and balance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you ever stop to consider that the only gift given to the adult Jesus was by a black man when Simon carried his cross? Or that the mighty, invincible Roman Army was defeated by an army of African warriors? Or that Jesus learned much of his healing powers and the power to raise the dead from a temple in Africa? These and many other stories are among the themes of The Cyrenean, by John M. Lee, a fast-paced, thought-provoking novel covering the life of Simon from Cyrene. As a slave, Simon is made a gladiator and is taught the evils of fighting in the Roman arena of death. Simon soon escapes and flees to Israel, where he and Jesus become friends, setting the stage for Simon's ultimate revenge, not only for the agony of the crucifixion of Jesus, but also for the killing of Simon's father early on in the book. The author's vivid descriptions and fluid prose produce a highly enjoyable read, for not only are his character portrayals and dialogue effective and real, his delving into historical events and people bring this work to the status of a page-turner. His people are presented with having universal appeal, with human strengths and weaknesses, all of which combine for a literate narrative rendering filled with adventure, excitement, romance, and above all, significant meaning. Mr. Lee's fine sense of timing and bold writing style infuses his story with life and suspense. He makes you care about the characters, the true standard for quality writing, and his obvious understanding of what makes people do the things they do is the essential element in many an interesting point about human nature. The passion and genuine goodness of Simon comes searing across each and every page of this book as the author's engaging style takes over from the very first page. As a highly recommended book, both for its energy and its realism, The Cyrenean, by John M. Lee, is one literary experience not to be missed.

Book excerpt: INCREASING PERSISTENCE "Of all the books addressing the puzzle of student success and persistence, I found this one to be the most helpful and believe it will be extremely useful to faculty and staff attempting to promote student success. The authors solidly ground their work in empirical research, and do a brilliant job providing both an overview of the relevant literature as well as research-based recommendations for intervention." GAIL HACKETT, PH.D., provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs; professor, counseling and educational psychology, University of Missouri, Kansas City Research indicates that approximately forty percent of all college students never earn a degree anywhere, any time in their lives. This fact has not changed since the middle of the 20th century. Written for practitioners and those who lead retention and persistence initiatives at both the institutional and public policy levels, Increasing Persistence offers a compendium on college student persistence that integrates concept, theory, and research with successful practice. It is anchored by the ACT's What Works in Student Retention (WWISR) survey of 1,100 colleges and universities, an important resource that contains insights on the causes of attrition and identifies retention interventions that are most likely to enhance student persistence.?? The authors focus on three essential conditions for student success: students must learn; students must be motivated, committed, engaged, and self-regulating; and students must connect with educational programs consistent with their interests and abilities. The authors offer a detailed discussion of the four interventions that research shows are the most effective for helping students persist and succeed: assessment and course placement, developmental education initiatives, academic advising, and student transition programming. Finally, they urge broadening the current retention construct, providing guidance to policy makers, campus leaders, and individuals on the contributions they can make to student success.

Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK The first 101 days of college, from a student's first class to their final exam, are a critical time and can mean the difference between success and failure. In this book, based on a talk I have given to over 15,000 students at 100 high schools, I share everything I have learned over the past 10 years as a college professor as to why some students succeed while others do not. Using short chapters, supporting illustrations, and an engaging writing style, students are given step-by-step instructions on how to approach their college experience, starting 30 days prior to their first semester. The book provides simple strategies on how students can get off to a strong start in college and persist to graduation within 4 years, avoiding having to pay for an extra semester or two, by developing proper planning, time management, and study skills, while giving encouragement, building confidence, and alleviating anxiety. The purpose of this book is to accelerate the personal and professional growth of college freshmen, giving readers the tools and training needed to succeed in college, preparing students to become confident leaders and high achievers on campus, and positioning them for career success upon graduation. By the end of this beautifully designed and professionally illustrated book, any anxiety about college will go away, and students will be excited about what is to come as they begin the next chapter of their lives. BUY ONE, GIVE ONE CollegeSuccess101.org is a social enterprise committed to college completion, especially those lacking family financial support. Book excerpt: Some pursue happiness — Others create it! — Anonymous The chief purpose of Create Your Ideal Life is to empower you to proactively (intentionally and consciously) and continually create your ideal life in a joyful and balanced fashion by following the holistic (emphasizing the importance of the whole and the interdependence of its parts) Life Creation Process described in it. Following the Life Creation Process will help you to gain the level of self-understanding required to optimize the quality of your life and achieve personal growth. As you read this book, you will be introduced to the key concepts of applied psychology of personal adjustment and growth. The term applied indicates that the material provided is practical and that you can readily use the concepts provided to create and control your self and your life. The words psychology of personal adjustment indicate that one focus of the book is upon “... the individual’s response to the physical, psychological, and social demands of the self, other people, and the environment” (Napoli, Kilbridge & Tebbs, 1996, p. 4). The words psychology of personal growth indicate that another focus is upon “... the process by which the individual changes his or her thoughts, feelings, or behaviors regarding the self, others, or the environment” (Napoli and others, 1996, p. 4). Additionally, you will learn effective strategies for exploring life choices and making decisions, managing life changes, changing self-defeating beliefs and habits, coping effectively with stress, and developing effective interpersonal relationships. You will also discover the important role that essential beliefs and core values play in the decision-making process and the problems that can arise out of value conflicts. I have provided true stories from my own life and from the lives of my family members, friends, and students to clarify and underscore key points. The stories are all true. However, some of the names were changed to protect each person’s privacy, except in cases where permission was granted to use the person’s real name. Throughout this book, I have used a cinematic (pertaining to the movie industry) analogy to explain the spiritual, psychological, physical, and social issues involved in personal adjustment and growth across the life span. I have used the cinematic analogy to both simplify and dramatize the key concepts in the holistic Life Creation Process in order to make them easier for you to understand, learn to use, and remember. In addition to the mnemonic (memory-enhancing) value of the cinematic analogy, I believe it makes the complex concepts involved in the holistic Life Creation Process easy to discuss with and teach other people. Most people are already familiar with the meaning of most of the movie industry terms used such as star, actor, screen image, script, cast, producer, director, and sequel, and they understand how all the key aspects of a movie can either contribute to its success or ruin the entire project. Therefore, using the cinematic terms makes it easier for people to comprehend how all the key aspects of their Ideal Future Life must be harmonious in order to achieve the desired results. As you complete the Life Creation Process Exercises, you will be directed to analyze the key aspects of your Present Life and create a script for your Ideal Future Life using techniques that are similar to those employed by successful movie stars, directors, producers, set designers, and script writers (e.g., DiTillio.;, 1995). You will also be guided to identify the Transitional Life goals that you will need to achieve in order to segue from living your Present Life to living your Ideal Future Life. The Ideal Future Life that you design at this present time is definitely not all there is or will ever be possible in your life. As you grow and change, you will update your vision of your ideal life. Learning the tools and techniques used in the Life Creation Process Exercises will empower you to continually recreate your Ideal Future Life through planned sequels in order to keep your life well balanced and overflowing with happiness and spiritual joy. The resources used for this book reflect my multidisciplinary approach to the Life Creation Process as well as my positive psychological orientation. I have included concepts from the traditional scholarly social-psychological literature, the popular self-help and self-improvement literature, and the media (plays, movies, tv, newspapers and magazines). The material includes both multidisciplinary academic resources and popular self-improvement resources that I have used, and found to be beneficial, during my own explorations in personal adjustment, growth, and Ideal Future Life creation. Most of the new material in this revised version of Create Your Ideal Life is from information that I have incorporated into my lectures, in-class exercises, and course assignments over the past 15 years.

Book excerpt: Bookstores are filled with shelves and shelves of books telling students how to get A's, how to manage their time more effectively, how to succeed socially, and how to get along with their roommates. Few, however, combine all these elements into a single, handy volume, and almost none are written by students themselves. Unique in its approach, The Complete Guide to College Success adopts a conversational style that engages the student in dialogue with its question and answer format, all the while providing useful, hands-on suggestions that translate into a positive college experience. Divided into three sections, The Complete Guide tackles Personal Development, Social and Interpersonal Excellence, and Academic Success. Each section is filled with self- improvement tips and strategies to make the college experience in its entirety a rewarding one. Descriptive and prescriptive in nature, the guide both informs readers and advises them: Do you have trouble taking tests? Here are some easy, and extremely effective, ways to enhance your memory and ace your exams. Are you always at a loss for time? The book provides straight-forward and proven strategies for time management. Nervous about meeting new people? Richard Newman has just the advice to put you at ease and to show you how to engage others. Concerned about dating, relationships, and sex issues in college? This book presents perspectives from students all over America. Newman also serves up an in-the-trenches look at college life with his Student Views, which introduce most chapters. Student Views are a collection of quotes gathered from college students around the country, who give their take on the issue that the chapter discusses. While most college guides are written by professionals in the fields of psychology or health, The Complete Guide to College Success is one of the only books written by a real expert—a student himself. Newman knows the reality of contemporary college life and here presents a wide range of college issues.
