Book excerpt: It is hard to find Alcoholic Anonymous literature that has the same flavor as your favorite meeting... until now. This book was written in the same spirit that claims - "We are not a glum lot." This book has been received with such favor that I have now written a second book to add to it, another 101 cliches, so people now have more cliches and commentary to ponder and enjoy. In the Big Book, an alcoholic' states, "...the most compelling part of A.A., the part that made me want to try this sober thing, was the laughter, the pure joy of the laughter that I heard only from sober alcoholics." This book was written first, with the hope to spread this laughter to the newcomer that has lost all hope. Secondly, it serves to enlighten and dispel rumors about AA, to inform people who are simply curious about the teachings of A.A. It tells what it is really like from someone who has taken the journey and recovered. It is filled with witty heartfelt clichés that are so true, so sharp, they make the old-timers smile and the newcomers cringe. The clichés are used to teach newcomers the greater truths about the cure for alcoholism. Each cliché is a parable, an allegorical truth that is then explained using plainly stated information from knowledgable sponsors and the Big Book with humorous commentary from a recovered alcoholic. This book is not fluff, nor is it for the faint hearted. The world of alcohol and drug abuse is not pretty, nor one easily explained or understood. This book is gritty, informative, and at the same time inspirational and full of joy and hope, but most of all it was written with the newcomer in mind, so it does a balancing act just for them. It is meant to be simple, when I was first getting sober I had the attention span of a gnat. It is honest and funny and gives a glimpse of just how ugly addiction gets and how attractive real recovery can be. After reading about us, our cliches and our solution to a condition described as cunning, baffling and powerful, it is my hope at least some will say, "Yes, I am one of them, too; I, too, must have this thing." NOTE: the font size in this book is very close to LARGE PRINT

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book digs deeper as it continues the work of the first book: a journey into sobriety. I have had many ask me to write about more cliches, so I have. This book is more profound, I could not help but write it with a different voice. The first book was written when I had 2-3 years sober. Now I am approaching 14 years sober, so I am older, I have been sober longer and my sobriety has matured. I still believe, like the first book, the spiritual wisdom of the old-timers is something all can enjoy and learn from, not just alcoholics, but any who are on a spiritual journey. The Big Book states that Henry Ford once made a wise remark to the effect that experience is the thing of supreme value in life. We grow by our willingness to face and rectify errors and convert them into assets. The alcoholic's past thus becomes his greatest asset. The first book was written with the hope to spread laughter and hope to the newcomer that believes all is lost. The second book speaks more to those with a little sobriety, not someone with the shakes. It is more in depth and thought provoking, for those with clearer heads. There are certain epiphanies that come with long term sobriety. In this book, each cliché is a parable, an allegorical truth that is explained using information from the Big Book and the realizations from someone who has recovered from alcoholism and has nearly 14 years sober. This book is not fluff, nor is it for the faint hearted. The world of alcohol and drug abuse is not pretty, nor one easily explained or understood. This book is soul searching and at the same time inspirational. I have tried to get a little deeper with this one, a little more personal, and more spiritual. I hope you gain as much in reading it as I did writing it.Sincerely, Bob T.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many thousands have benefited from "The Big Book" and its simple but profound explanation of the doctrines behind Alcoholics Anonymous, which was founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith. This original 1939 edition outlines the famous 12 steps, and offers counsel for those who wish to join the program but doubt the existence of a higher power. It also contains encouraging personal stories, in which AA members relate their experiences with alcohol and how they found the path to sobriety. "The Big Book" has gone through numerous editions and remains the most widely used resource for recovering alcoholics. Only this original 1939 edition includes all 29 stories of the program's pioneers, which share the details of their full journey, including initial recovery, sometimes followed by relapse and eventual success. This edition also features the key to the solution claimed by Bill Wilson: a vital spiritual experience that allows followers to rediscover, or discover, God. This realistic portrayal of the program as offered by its founders has been lost in subsequent editions of the work, and is presented here to serve as a reminder that success comes in many forms.

Book excerpt: S.O.B.E.R. is a bird's eye view of how Alcoholics Anonymous works from the perspective of a long time, sober member. Based on the author's personal experience, S.O.B.E.R. tells the story of William R. Schumacher, III, a middle class professional who reluctantly enters the world of AA after falling out of his neighbor's house one night in a drunken stupor. In a search for ways to help him moderate and manage his drinking so he could once again enjoy a ?perfect two martini lunch?, he finds instead the shocking reality that his behavior is a disease which demands total abstinence. Along the road to recovery our hero earns the nickname ?Billybob? and encounters a number of colorful characters whose backgrounds run the gamut ?from Yale to Jail.? Initially, Billybob is put off by the persistent use of dozens of acronyms often heard in AA meeting rooms. Eventually, Billybob understands how the acronyms and sayings of Alcoholics Anonymous help the afflicted and overwrought brains of recovering alcoholics absorb the meaning of important principles that enhance recovery. S.O.B.E.R. takes you into the rooms and the program of Alcoholics Anonymous as if you were a member. You will observe and relate to the pain, joy, suffering, confusion, elation, anger, resentment and, above all, the spiritual mystery that is AA. To the recovering alcoholic, S.O.B.E.R. re-affirms the success of the Alcoholics Anonymous program where ?rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path.? To the person struggling with the possibility of their being alcoholic, S.O.B.E.R. may provide a non-threatening basis for self-identification and an impetus to investigate the program as a means to overcome their disease. To the non-alcoholic, S.O.B.E.R. is an irreverently humorous yet inspirational look into a parallel dimension in modern behavior known as Alcoholics Anonymous.

Alcoholics Anonymous-the Big Book-has served as a lifeline to millions worldwide. First published in 1939, Alcoholics Anonymous sets forth cornerstone concepts of recovery from alcoholism and tells the stories of men and women who have overcome the disease. Personal stories have been added to reflect the growing and diverse fellowship. Key features and benefits - the most widely used resource for millions of individuals in recovery - contains full, original text describing AA program - personal stories We, of Alcoholics Anonymous, are more than one hundred men and women who have recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body. To show other alcoholics precisely how we have recovered is the main purpose of this book. For them, we hope these pages will prove so convincing that no further authentication will be necessary. We think this account of our experiences will help everyone to better understand the alcoholic. Many do not comprehend that the alcoholic is a very sick person. And besides, we are sure that our way of living has its advantages for all. It is important that we remain anonymous because we are too few, at present to handle the overwhelming number of personal appeals which may result from this publication. Being mostly business or professional folk, we could not well carry on our occupations in such an event. We would like it understood that our alcoholic work is an avocation. When writing or speaking publicly about alcoholism, we urge each of our Fellowship to omit his personal name, designating himself instead as "a member of Alcoholics Anonymous." Very earnestly we ask the press also, to observe this request, for otherwise we shall be greatly handicapped. We are not an organization in the conventional sense of the word. There are no fees or dues whatsoever. The only requirement for membership is an honest desire to stop drinking. We are not allied with any particular faith, sect or denomination, nor do we oppose anyone. We simply wish to be helpful to those who are afflicted. We shall be interested to hear from those who are getting results from this book, particularly form those who have commenced work with other alcoholics. We should like to be helpful to such cases. Inquiry by scientific, medical, and religious societies will be welcomed.
