Book excerpt: "A wholeheartedly charming cast of characters steers this witty and preposterous SF comedy." - Kirkus Reviews What if the Wizard told Dorothy the “tornado” was actually a spaceship that took her to another planet? Well, that’s not the plot of Zoomarble. But it is certainly the vibe as Joey and Clarissa’s eerie feelings of a childhood fairytale quickly derail into an absurd space adventure, revealing how the universe is a bigger, goofier place than they imagined. With the safety of Earth at stake, things must be dealt with the way all problems should be confronted: with humor, rum, and a plan. Someone has a plan, right? From Amazon Reviews: "The writing is slick and moves through the story without purple prose or pretension." "It's a fast-paced reading adventure with an abundance of quirky characters..." From Goodreads Reviews: "Great characters and a really great adventure. Full of imagination and light humor! This was a fun read." "This book had some great bones and some interesting plot points, but it felt very disjointed." (You can't win them all.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1943, fierce aerial bombardment razed the Berlin zoo and killed most of its animals. But only two months after the war's end, Berliners had already resurrected it, reopening its gates and creating a symbol of endurance in the heart of a shattered city. As this episode shows, the Berlin zoo offers one of the most unusual--yet utterly compelling--lenses through which to view German history. This enormously popular attraction closely mirrored each of the political systems under which it existed: the authoritarian monarchy of the kaiser, the Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany, and the post-1945 democratic and communist states. Gary Bruce provides the first English-language history of the Berlin zoo, from its founding in 1844 until the 1990 unification of the West Berlin and East Berlin zoos. At the center of the capital's social life, the Berlin zoo helped to shape German views not only of the animal world but also of the human world for more than 150 years. Given its enormous reach, the German government used the zoo to spread its political message, from the ethnographic display of Africans, Inuit, and other "exotic" peoples in the late nineteenth century to the Nazis' bizarre attempts to breed back long-extinct European cattle. By exploring the intersection of zoology, politics, and leisure, Bruce shows why the Berlin zoo was the most beloved institution in Germany for so long: it allowed people to dream of another place, far away from an often grim reality. It is not purely coincidence that the profound connection of Berliners to their zoo intensified through the bloody twentieth century. Its exotic, iconic animals--including Rostom the elephant, Knautschke the hippo, and Evi the sun bear--seemed to satisfy, even partially, a longing for a better, more tranquil world.

The Zoomarble Madcap Space Adventure Series continues with Book 2: Meaner Monkeys. New quirky characters, additional limbs, senseless violence, and enemies of the scariest kind. Where Zoomarble leaves off (Friday), Meaner Monkeys picks up (Friday evening). The group has a job to do, whether or not the details have been entered into the system. Important lessons include: how to fly a spaceship, where to gain skills such as thoracic surgery and decoupage, don’t attempt to fly through gas planets just because they are balls of gas, and if you are ever anywhere doing anything and all the animals suddenly run away… RUN!

Book excerpt: Progress took a unique route when it arrived in Coral Springs, Florida. Originally envisioned as an upscale version of the Old South, Coral Springs quickly became a showcase for all that was modern in the 1960s. Sold away in parcels at events such as the "Largest Land-Rush Discount Land Sale and Barbecue," the land that was to become Coral Springs was developed with the goal of making it "the premier city in Florida in which to live, work, and raise a family." As it grew from empty farmland to a thriving city with over 120,000 citizens in less than 40 years, the planners of Coral Springs were always preparing for the future: land for schools and parks was set aside before a road was paved, and deed and zoning restrictions governed the construction of every building. But there was always time for spontaneity-Coral Springs grilled its way into the Guinness Book of World Records by cooking the world's largest hamburger.
