Book excerpt: Zen is not a religion, it is living life in its totality, herenow. Religions are always postponing life: they are giving you beautiful illusions about life somewhere in the future, far away, beyond death. That is a strategy to divert and distract you from the realities of life. That is pure cowardice. It is also a rationalization so that you can be consoled: ’If life is miserable today there is nothing to be worried about, tomorrow everything is going to be well. In fact, to suffer life today is a preparation for enjoying life tomorrow, so the more you suffer the better. There is no reason to complain, no reason to rebel, no reason to revolt against all those things which are causing misery.’

Book Synopsis Seeing through Zen by : John R. Mcrae
Download or read book Seeing through Zen written by John R. Mcrae and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2004-01-19 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tradition of Chan Buddhism—more popularly known as Zen—has been romanticized throughout its history. In this book, John R. McRae shows how modern critical techniques, supported by recent manuscript discoveries, make possible a more skeptical, accurate, and—ultimately—productive assessment of Chan lineages, teaching, fundraising practices, and social organization. Synthesizing twenty years of scholarship, Seeing through Zen offers new, accessible analytic models for the interpretation of Chan spiritual practices and religious history. Writing in a lucid and engaging style, McRae traces the emergence of this Chinese spiritual tradition and its early figureheads, Bodhidharma and the "sixth patriarch" Huineng, through the development of Zen dialogue and koans. In addition to constructing a central narrative for the doctrinal and social evolution of the school, Seeing through Zen examines the religious dynamics behind Chan’s use of iconoclastic stories and myths of patriarchal succession. McRae argues that Chinese Chan is fundamentally genealogical, both in its self-understanding as a school of Buddhism and in the very design of its practices of spiritual cultivation. Furthermore, by forgoing the standard idealization of Zen spontaneity, we can gain new insight into the religious vitality of the school as it came to dominate the Chinese religious scene, providing a model for all of East Asia—and the modern world. Ultimately, this book aims to change how we think about Chinese Chan by providing new ways of looking at the tradition.
Book Synopsis Walking in Zen, Sitting in Zen by : OSHO
Download or read book Walking in Zen, Sitting in Zen written by OSHO and published by Jaico Publishing House. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese master Yoka Daishi was said to have been in a state of perfect repose while walking, standing, sitting and lying down. According to legend, he attained complete realization in one night, and was called: “master of the enlightenment attained in one night.” Osho describes Yoka as a Zen master of great skill; his words being tremendously beautiful, yet uncompromising. His deep respect and compassion for the individual is such that he wants you to wake up now; he shatters all your dreams. Osho walks hand in hand with Yoka’s insistence that the man of Zen is extraordinary in his ordinariness: he walks in Zen, he sits in Zen. In combining Yoka’s sutras with personal questions from seekers, Osho’s responses are uniquely tailored, travelling like razorsharp arrows to the heart of the questioner. Thus he brings alive the ancient Zen master’s words that can only be heard with a deep love for truth and the courage to go through radical transformation. Osho is an Indian mystic and philosopher. He has spoken on major spiritual traditions including Jainism, Hinduism, Hassidism, Tantrism, Christianity, Buddhism, on a variety of Eastern and Western mystics and on sacred scriptures such as the Upanishads. “Zen has both the beauty of Buddha and the beauty of Lao Tzu; it is the child of both. Such a meeting has never happened before or since.” Osho
Book Synopsis The First Principle Talks On Zen by : OSHO
Download or read book The First Principle Talks On Zen written by OSHO and published by Jaico Publishing House. This book was released on 2023-10-20 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AUTHENTIC TRUTH CANNOT BE SAID WITH WORDS, IT CAN ONLY BE LIVED. In The First Principle, Osho captures the unique, colorful, seemingly crazy spirit of Zen through talks on a collection of Zen stories – anecdotes of the often-bizarre interchanges between a master and disciple in the quest for truth. From these anecdotes, Osho distills Zen’s pragmatic essence for the reader and conveys an alive understanding of its message – “the first principle.” Speaking to the contemporary, modern reader without robbing these old tales of their magic, charm and humor, Osho reminds us: “You are the shrine for the first principle. So the only way is to go within. Turn in. That is what meditation is all about.”
Book Synopsis The White Lotus: Talks on the Zen Master Bodhidharma by : Osho
Download or read book The White Lotus: Talks on the Zen Master Bodhidharma written by Osho and published by Jaico Publishing House. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE WHITE LOTUS IS A BEAUTIFUL SYMBOL. White represents multidimensionality, because white contains all the colors of the spectrum. That is the most strange, unbelievable quality about white: it contains all the colors yet it seems to be colorless. But it contains all those colors in such synthesis, in such harmony, that they all disappear. They dissolve into oneness and that oneness is white. White represents the ultimate synthesis and harmony… And the lotus also is a great symbol, particularly in the East… The lotus represents the essential meaning of sannyas. The lotus lives in the lake and yet the water cannot touch it. It lives in the water and yet remains untouched by the water. The lotus represents the witnessing quality of your being: You live in the world, but you remain a witness. You remain in the world and yet you are not part of it. You participate and yet you are not part of it. You are in the world, but the world is not in you. When you become a calm and cool observer of life you are going to laugh not ordinary laughter but a belly laughter like a lion’s roar. And white lotuses will start showering on you.

Book Synopsis Osho: The Luminous Rebel by : Vasant Joshi
Download or read book Osho: The Luminous Rebel written by Vasant Joshi and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2015-04-23 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often described as a rebel, an iconoclast, an enlightened mystic and an intellectual giant, Osho (also known as Acharya Rajneesh and Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh) is all this and more. He brought about a spiritual revolution in the lives of those who cared to grow intellectually. He spoke fearlessly against orthodox religions, priests, politicians, age-old traditions and anything he thought was a hindrance to the path of self realisation. This made him the most talked about and controversial mystic of the twentieth century. Enlightenment of this stature is not attained in a few years or even in a lifetime it is spread over hundreds of years and over lives, as was with the case of Osho, who spoke about his previous life and birth. This is only one of the many astounding facts about Osho which this book reveals. Osho The Luminous Rebel traces the story of Osho from his birth, talking about his spiritual search for truth and the wondrous story of his enlightenment. The book also takes the reader through those years of Osho's struggle with authority figures, his travels all over India, to the much-hyped city of Rajneeshpuram in the US, to one of the greatest mysteries of our times. Osho believes that he was poisoned by the US government when he was detained in various jails there; he was later denied visas in almost all countries across the world events, he reveals, that exposed the true face of democracy. Osho The Luminous Rebel is for all Osho lovers and admirers, for the uninitiated but spiritually inclined, and for those who are just curious to know more.
Book Synopsis Feminism and the Religious Significance of Laughing Bodies by : Nicole Graham
Download or read book Feminism and the Religious Significance of Laughing Bodies written by Nicole Graham and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies the significance of the body through a feminist reconceptualisation of laughter as a means of insight. It positions itself within the emerging scholarship on religion and humour but distinguishes itself by moving away from the emphasis on humour and instead focuses on the place and role of laughter. Through a feminist reading of laughter, which is grounded in the philosophical and psychological works of William James, this book emphasises the importance of the body to offer an exploration of laughter as a means of insight. In doing so, it challenges the classificatory orders of knowledge by recognising and arguing for the value of the body in the creation of knowledge and understanding. To demonstrate the centrality of the body for insight laughter, and thus the creation of knowledge, this book engages with laughter within three thematic areas: religious experience, gendered experiences of laughter, and the ethics of laughter. This book will be of interest to students and researchers in religious studies, theology, gender studies, humour studies, philosophy, and the history of ideas.
