Die sagenform der Snorra Edda wird durch SH ange deutet, während die verschiedenen entwicklungsstufen, die sich auf grund von Snorr1s erzählung erkennen lassen, als SH usw. Unter schieden werden. Die bezeichnung SH 1 bedeutet demnach lediglich die älteste sagenform, die sich in Snorris darstellung erkennen lässt; ein urteil uber die frage, ob es möglich ist, mit hilfe anderer versionen eine noch altere fassung zu erschliessen, ist darin nicht enthalten. Es ist ferner denkbar, dass ein glied der reihe SH 1. 2 usw. Sich mit einem gliede einer anderen reihe, etwa FH usw. (den entwicklungsstufen des Sorla hättr) als identisch ergeben wird. L. Koldewey unter dem Titel: Justus Georg Schottelius. Ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der Germanistik. Wolfenbuttel 1899. Seine Totenklage, die hier aufs neue zum Abdruck kommt, ist einer der vielen Stossseufzer, durch die er als wahrer Patriot seinem bedrangten Herzen Luft zu machen suchte. Seine Verse mogen uns abgeschmackt vorkommen und hie und da ein Latcheln abgewinnen, aber Wie man sich auch zu dem Ganzen stellen mag, der heilige Ernst, der aus jeder Zeile Spricht, ist unverkennbar. Schottels Name verdient mit Recht in einem Zuge mit Wimpfeling und Lauremberg genannt zu werden, deren Namen aus jenen traurigen' Tagen gléinzend hervorleuchten und deren Begeisterung fiir alles Vaterléindische nicht umhin konnte Anh'ainger zu werben und Nachfolge zu Weeken.2 Das Original der Lamentatio befindet sich auf der Bibliothek in Wolfenbiittel. Eine solche zusammenfassende betrachtung soll in den folgenden zeilen versucht werden. Leider ist mir hier ein gros ser teil des zu einer solchen untersuchung nötigen materials nicht zu gänglich gewesen. Ein kurzer aufenthalt in Berlin sezte mich zwar in stand, die wichtigsten tatsachen nachzuprüfen; aber alle meine bemühungen, die erste gedruckte hochdeutsche Bibel sowie die zwischen 1473 und 1175 durch Günther Zeiner in Augsburg gedruckte ausgabe, zu beständiger vergleichung hierher zu bekommen, hatten keinen erfolg, so dass ich mich für die erstere im wesentlichen auf die vergleichung in Klimeschs ausgabe des Codex Teplensis s. 129 - 172, für die zweite auf einige excerpte beschränken muste.
