This facility uses a LINAC as a neutron source and a Ge(Li) as the gamma detector. The facility was used to measure the gamma-ray production cross sections of nitrogen and oxygen for incident neutron energies of up to 16 MeV. The results are tabulated, graphed, and compared with other measurements. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Propagation of Gamma Quanta in Matter deals with various problems of the propagation and absorption of gamma quanta in matter, including the occurrence of multiple scattering of radiation. A general account of theoretical methods of solving problems of multiple scattering of quanta is presented, with emphasis on the results of solving such problems. This book consists of three chapters and begins with a discussion on the interaction of gamma radiation with matter; multiple scattering of gamma quanta; and the distribution function and quantities connected with it. The next chapter focuses on the theory of multiple scattering of gamma quanta and covers subjects such as the transport equation and its analytical solution; method of moments; method of random sampling; and method of successive collisions. The last chapter examines the propagation of radiation for various geometrical configurations of the sources and absorbing media, paying particular attention to a point source in a homogeneous medium and on the boundary of two media; unidirectional radiation in a homogeneous medium; reflexion of gamma radiation from the surface of a scattering medium; a plane isotropic source; and a thick radiating layer of an absorbing medium. This monograph will appeal to students as well as physicists and engineers engaged in shield design problems.

Book excerpt: This book introduces graduate students to the gamma-ray and conversion-electron spectroscopic methods, which have shed new light on nuclear structure and reaction mechanisms. The simplicity and familiarity of the electromagnetic interaction involved gives accurate values for many nuclear quantities, and both static and dynamic properties can be investigated over a wide range of excitation energies. More experienced nuclear physicists will benefit by the book's review of recent developments in the field, including the development of new experimental techniques such as gamma-detector assemblies, electron spectrometers, and measurements of electromagnetic moments. The book is distinguished by a careful balance between the presentation of theoretical concepts and experimental methods.

Book excerpt: Transmission electron energy-loss has been used to determine the angular and energy dependence of the cross-section for K-shell ionization of Al, and L-shell ionization of Cr, Fe, and Cu. On the basis of these experimental results it was found that sinple hydrogenic theory predicts veil the angular distribution of inner- shell scattering and shows a reasonable absolute agreement for a large energy window. In addition, total-inelastic cross-sections for these elements were measured and corpared with Lenz, Hartree- Slater, and Plasmon theory. The experiments show that a free- electron plasmon model predicts fairly veil the cross-section for elements such as Al. For Cr, Fe, and Cu an atonic model is more appropriate.
