Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vocational Guidance of Youth The increased attention to bodily health and strength in school is the natural concomitant of the awakened public interest in physical health and strength, not merely for our physical 'wel fare but also as one of our most important social resources. Quite apart from the misery ill-health or physical weakness usiially entails, it is clear that economic efficienlpy depends on it. 'the relation of a youth's physical health and vigor to success and satisfaction in his 'vocation is clear. If, possessing physical inaptitude or weak ness, he enters a pursuit that is not adapted to him, only moderate usefulness and perhaps early incapacity must be his fate. N'either he nor society can afford to take such a risk. Hence the necessity of a close relation and ultimate cooperation between all the agencies for promoting the public health and vocational guidance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational Preparation of Youth in Catholic Schools The movement towards attaining and improving vocational education in the state schools has made rapid progress in the last two decades. It grew from the conviction that the large majority of pupils received no adequate preparation for their lifework, as only a small percentage availed themselves of the opportunities afforded by secondary schools. The danger to which a large number of these children was exposed after leaving school at an early age, grew to be a menace to individual and industrial development. Many educators sought the remedy for this evil in a radical change of the educational system, and a course of study so arranged as to afford to the pupils a preparation for their career. On the other hand there were those who strenuously Opposed this movement be cause they considered it undemocratic and tending to the for mation of a caste system. The attempt to reconcile these two extremes has caused the introduction of vocational education in addition to the usual courses offered by secondary schools, and resulted in the creation of our ever-increasing number of vocational schools. A study of the history of Monastic schools reveals the fact that these afforded excellent opportunity for vocational train ing; but their motive and aim in preparing their pupils for life's work was not, like that of our modern state schools, pri marily utilitarian. The success achieved in art and industry was due largely to the motivation that inspired the students of Monastic schools to exert all their powers in the realization of their high ideals. The in uence of St. Benedict and his fol lowers changed the then prevalent attitude toward labor, invested manual work with the dignity of prayer, and brought untold blessings upon the people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Choice of Vocation: A Selected List of Books and Magazine Articles for the Guidance of Students This bibliography is designed to furnish a list of books and magazine articles in which boys and girls may find re liable information presented in an interesting form. In com piling it all-available lists have been consulted, especially the very full recent volume by Frederick J. Allen, A Guide to the Study of Occupations. Since most of the books referred to give information about several occupations, repetition has been avoided by arranging the material in two sections. One gives an alphabetical list of occupations, indicating under each the books and magazines in which information may be found. The other lists alphabetically all the books referred to, with a descriptive note about each. Each magazine article treats of a single occupation and is therefore entered in full, with the descriptive note, under the occupation. The teacher or counselor who desires suggestions for mak ing the best use of the material gathered together here, is referred to the abundant literature of vocational guidance. One of the best bibliographies on that subject is one compiled by J. M. Brewer and R. W. Kelly, under the title A Selected Critical Bibliography of Vocational Guidance. Other useful books are Brewer's Vocational Guidance Movement, Davis's Vocational and Moral Guidance, and Bloomfield's Youth, School and Vocation. Much of the material composing this bulletin has therefore been drawn from the educational and general social experiences of the Writers. This bulletin has been hurriedly prepared; therefore, it may lack many desired refinements of organization. It is intended primarily for the use of those preparing to teach part time classes. It will, however, be useful to superintendents of schools, boards of education, principals, teachers, and the employers of youth Who are subject to the compulsory Part-time Education Act. Book excerpt: My Misspent Youth is an incisive collection that marked the start of a new millennium and became a cult classic, from the editor of Selfish, Shallow, and Self-Absorbed and the author of The Unspeakable An essayist in the tradition of Joan Didion, Meghan Daum is one of the most celebrated nonfiction writers of her generation, widely recognized for her fresh, provocative approach with which she unearths the hidden fault lines in the American landscape. From her well remembered New Yorker essays about the financial demands of big-city ambition and the ethereal, strangely old-fashioned allure of cyber-relationships to her dazzlingly hilarious riff in Harper's about musical passions that give way to middle-brow paraphernalia, Daum delves into the center of things while closely examining the detritus that spills out along the way. With precision and well-balanced irony, Daum implicates herself as readily as she does the targets that fascinate and horrify her.

Book excerpt: Jean Price-Mars (1876 - 1969), Haitian physician, ethnographer, diplomat, educator, historian, politician, was a towering intellectual in Haitian history and cultural studies, and a Pan Africanist who called to reevaluate the contributions of Africa in universal civilizations and to revalorize African retentions and cultural practices in the Black diaspora, especially on Haitian soil. Through his writings, Price-Mars, whom Leopold Sedar Senghor called "the Father of Negritude," sought to establish connecting links between Africa and the Black Diaspora, and the shared history and struggle between people of African descent in the Diaspora. For many scholars, Price-Mars is the father of Haitian ethnology and Dean of Haitian Studies in the twentieth-century, and arguably, the most influential Haitian thinker that has graced the "Black Republic" since the death of Joseph Auguste Anténor Firmin in 1911. In Haitian thought, Price-Mars has exercised an enduring intellectual and ideological influence on the young Haitian intellectuals and writers of the generation of the American Occupation in Haiti (1915-1934) and the post-Occupation culture from the 1930s to 1970s. He is especially known for launching a cultural nationalism and an anti-imperial movement against the brutal American military forces in Haiti.Celucien L. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Youth Foundation: Its Service, Principles, Objective, Training Plan, Scope and Origin A wage-earning boy sat in my office a few mornings ago. He was dissatisfied with himself and the blind-alley job at which he was working. If I could only find the kind of work I could like, I know I'd make a big go of it. I'm sick of working on a job where you never have to think. How can I find out What I'm good for? A college man, in his third year at school, asked me for an interview last spring. I was on the campus to meet young fellows in just that way. His nose was out of joint with the Whole academic system. Here I am putting in four years and what for? Will I really be better able to take the lead in business life because I've spent four years here? My observation of the graduates of the last two years and my lack of interest in the stuff I'm supposed to wade through here, raises a doubt in my mind about the whole business.
