Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the frame of Zoom, this collection of essays examines the rapid emergence of videoconferencing in everyday life under COVID-19, its preexisting performative logic, and the ongoing implication of these practices for millions of individuals and institutions. The year 2023 marked the end of the World Health Organization's classification of the COVID-19 outbreak as a “public health emergency of international concern,” yet many of the organizational and institutional restructurings that occurred in the rapid response to the pandemic have remained firmly in place. The prevalence of videoconferencing in everyday life marks one such instance, not only highlighting the dramatic social and cultural transformations that occurred during a period of lockdowns, social distancing, and stay-at-home orders, but also serving as an index of all that has emerged as the “new normal” since March 2020. Overnight, it seemed, Zoom emerged as the default videoconferencing platform, rapidly morphing from brand name to eponymous generic. While this volume focuses predominantly on Zoom and its place in the collective imagination and daily practice of those of us whose lives are profoundly caught up in digital networks, many of these insights presented here apply to other videoconferencing platforms as well, and a supporting logic that has governed neoliberal lives since long before the first lockdowns began. The twelve chapters in this collection explore how videoconferencing platforms in general, and Zoom in particular, have provided individuals and institutions new modes of “engagement,” while at the same time reifying, normalizing, and domesticating modes of surveillance, control, and marginalization that have been part and parcel of a networked-based performative logic for nearly a century.

Book excerpt: A ripped-from-the-headlines novel of ambition, music, and innocence lost, perfect for fans of Elizabeth Acevedo and Jason Reynolds! Be bold. Get seen. Be Heard. For seventeen-year-old Denver, music is everything. Writing, performing, and her ultimate goal: escaping her very small, very white hometown. So Denver is more than ready on the day she and her best friends Dali and Shak sing their way into the orbit of the biggest R&B star in the world, Sean "Mercury" Ellis. Merc gives them everything: parties, perks, wild nights -- plus hours and hours in the recording studio. Even the painful sacrifices and the lies the girls have to tell are all worth it.Until they're not.Denver begins to realize that she's trapped in Merc's world, struggling to hold on to her own voice. As the dream turns into a nightmare, she must make a choice: lose her big break, or get broken.Inspired by true events, Muted is a fearless exploration of the dark side of the music industry, the business of exploitation, how a girl's dreams can be used against her -- and what it takes to fight back.

Book excerpt: A story of courage and transformation, of the power of friendship and love, and the importance of doing what is right, whatever the cost. 'Muted' centres around a strong, powerful woman who has lost her way in her pursuit of success in business, and an insightful, enigmatic man who wants to help her rediscover what is truly important. Outback horseman Lane Dimity is one of the most powerful social media personalities on the planet. Although unable to speak since the tragedy that took place on his eighth birthday, his words reach out across the world, changing lives. When he learns that more than a thousand stallions have been bred by the U.S. pharmaceutical company, Pilatos Industries, to be used in the development of their new drug, Stablex, he knows he has to do all he can to free them. Unfortunately, the heir to Pilatos, Karen Lawford, will do everything in her power to stop him. Pilatos has gambled its future on the revolutionary new drug, Stablex, and these genetically unique stallions are needed to produce the drug... there are no limits to what they will do to ensure that Lane doesn't interfere. Lane tries to convince Karen that the Pilatos stallions must be given their freedom, but his beliefs are losing the battle against the Pilatos creed of greed, and it is only when she learns the shocking truth of what lies at the heart of the laboratories that there's any chance of change, but is it too late for Lane? Sometimes, you only know how much you love someone once you lose them. An intriguing and inspiring story of love and friendship set against the greed of the corporate world. A story that explores what is important in life, starting with the heart-rending tragedy in the Prologue and journeying around the world with humour and mystery. You don't need to like horses to enjoy the book, but even the most experienced horse people will appreciate the knowledge shared by Lane.

Book excerpt: The how-to guide for your career In his previous book, Lose the Resume, Land the Job, author Gary Burnison exposed the myths and the ineffective thinking around how to land the job you really want. Now, in Advance, he takes readers through the next stage—advancing in their careers. Advance is extremely timely and topical in today's do-it-yourself career development world. Average job tenure has fallen to about four years on average and often only one or two years for younger professionals. These "career nomads" simply aren't around long enough to access career development from their employers. On the other end of the workplace spectrum, many employees find themselves stuck in one job without a promotion, without any raise to speak of, and with no opportunities to learn and grow. In Advance, Burnison lays out a mosaic of "how-to" advice that applies every day and at every level—the skills and behaviors that help people navigate their careers and stand out among the crowd. He takes on a "Top 20" of career must-haves: managing for the first time, engaging in the "money conversation" with your boss, dealing with difficult bosses (without quitting), coping with coworkers (without losing your mind), making presentations (that don't put people to sleep), mastering digital communication (and avoiding emails that will get you fired), thinking globally (without leaving your office), taking an overseas assignment, meeting senior leaders for the first time (without putting your foot in your mouth), navigating political waters (without sinking your career), reading and fitting in with the culture, and more. • Wisdom on taking your career to the next level • Career development tips • Guidance on being seen and heard • Written by the CEO of one of the world’s largest management consulting firms Whether you’re just starting your career, high up on the ladder, or “stuck” anywhere in between, Advance gives you the know-how to get on a path to where you want to go.
