Book Synopsis Real News about the News by : Kenneth Newton
Download or read book Real News about the News written by Kenneth Newton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-31 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role does the media play in British politics? There is growing concern that the media environment is biased, and that online news and social media spread fake news, conspiracy theories, propaganda, and foreign interference. Examining TV, radio, newspapers and the internet, Kenneth Newton unravels the real effects of the mainstream and alternative news media. With abundant evidence, Newton demonstrates that, contrary to popular belief: newspapers neither win nor lose elections; nor set election agendas; most citizens have a fairly mixed news diet and do not inhabit echo-chambers; social media influences on political attitudes are generally small and actually expand the range of news people get; impartial and reliable public service news still provides the bulk of the nation's news diet. Evidence shows that the main media effects on political attitudes and behaviour are positive and inform and mobilise citizens rather than influencing their voting choice.

Book Synopsis Face in the Window by : Cheryl Knoll
Download or read book Face in the Window written by Cheryl Knoll and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-11-12 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2020 was not good for our country. I feel there were a lot of people just like me. We were faces in our windows, looking out, wondering what in the world is going on. We have some evil giants trying to stomp us down, and they are trying to turn our country into something we cannot accept. God is love, but He is not just soft, mushy, quiet love. God has a temper, and He has displayed it in His Word. The scolding poems (the face in the window poems) came to me in a basically complete form. To me, they were a gift. I barely changed a word or corrected any of them. It is okay for us to use righteous indignation to fight what is wrong. We are not doormats for someone to wipe their feet on. If someone is trying to walk all over you, pull yourself out from underneath them and knock them on their backsides. God uses tough love for correction and teaching. God will show His wrath when He is angered. He displays His righteous indignation. He offers the greatest love imaginable. He offers mercy and grace. Don’t forget He has a sense of humor. God has a wide range of emotions and so do we. God loves America. God’s love is alive. God loves to hear from us, and He is saying, “Where are you?” I love to write poems about God’s love for us and my love for Him. Now it’s 2021. Hmm...something is going to happen.

Book Synopsis America, the Owner's Manual by : Bob Graham
Download or read book America, the Owner's Manual written by Bob Graham and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2016, Americans fed up with the political process vented that frustration with their votes. Republicans nominated for president a wealthy businessman and former reality show host best known on the campaign trail for his sharp rhetoric against immigration and foreign trade. Democrats nearly selected a self-described socialist who ran on a populist platform against the influence of big money in politics. While it is not surprising that Americans would channel their frustrations into votes for contenders who pledge to end business as usual, the truth is that we don’t have to pin our hopes for greater participation on any one candidate. All of us have a say—if we learn, master and practice the skills of effective citizenship. One of the biggest roadblocks to participation in democracy is the perception that privileged citizens and special interests command the levers of power and that everyday Americans can’t fight City Hall. That perception is undoubtedly why a 2015 Pew Charitable Trusts survey found that 74 percent of those Americans surveyed believed that most elected officials didn't care what people like them thought. Graham and Hand intend to change that conventional wisdom by showing citizens how to flex their citizenship muscles. They describe effective citizenship skills and provide tips from civic experts. Even more importantly, they offer numerous examples of everyday Americans who have used their skills to make democracy respond. The reader will see themselves in these examples of citizens who chose to be victorious participants rather than tranquil spectators in the arena of democracy. By the end of the book, you will have new confidence that citizen participation is the lifeblood of America -- and will be ready to make governments work for you, not the other way around.

In our own mind this creates an invaluable safety net for our decision-making processes. But what seems like a useful tool in our head, can be cruel and patently unfair beyond it. Trends in a world driven by the Internet are educating us about how harmful stereotyping can be. And those falling foul of a behaviour seemingly ingrained in our DNA, are paying high-profile prices. Locker Room Talk examines how we got here, why it’s so hard to change our mindset and the consequences for us and the brands we represent, if we do not.
Book Synopsis Navigating the News by : Michael K. Baranowski
Download or read book Navigating the News written by Michael K. Baranowski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the book for anyone who aspires to the title "informed citizen." It clearly explains how political news works, how the media influences readers—and how to sort through it all to be a better, smarter consumer of political news. In a perfect world, political news would be objective and fact-based. Instead, it is biased and unreliable. This engaging book was written to help readers master the media. Combining insight and humor, it exposes the bias, irrationality, bad arguments, and misleading numbers that abound in political media. It shows readers how to take advantage of available news sources, and it guides them in developing the skills needed to sort through the flood of hype and misinformation. Specifically, the book examines types of political media and why it matters whether one gets political news from television, radio, newspapers, or the Internet, including social media. It discusses the latest developments in political behavior, economics, media studies, and neuroscience to explain why the political media does what it does to systematically distort consumers' view of politics—and it looks at ways consumers tend to be irrational in choosing and interpreting news. Finally, it offers concrete suggestions that will enable readers to become more critical of what they read, see, and hear.

Book Synopsis Presidential Polls And The News Media by : Paul J Lavrakas
Download or read book Presidential Polls And The News Media written by Paul J Lavrakas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most news media are "data rich but analysis poor" when it comes to election polling. Since election polls clearly have the power to influence campaigns and election post-mortems, it is important that "spin" not take precedence over significance in the reporting of poll results. In this volume, experts in the media and in academe challenge the conventional approaches that most news media take in their poll-based campaign coverage. The book reports new research findings on news coverage of recent presidential elections and provides a myriad of examples of how journalists and news media executives can improve their analysis of poll data, thereby better serving our political processes.
