Book Synopsis A Friend in Deed by : Professor Joshua Fogel
Download or read book A Friend in Deed written by Professor Joshua Fogel and published by . This book was released on 2019-03 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lu Xun spent the last decade of his life in the turbulent world of Shanghai. Soon after arriving in 1927, he befriended Uchiyama Kanzō, owner of a bookstore specializing in Japanese writings. Their friendship and the mutual kindnesses (occasionally involving near-death experiences) form the core of this short volume. In part a meditation of what two people with such different backgrounds--one the most famous intellectual of his time, the other a merchant with a sixth-grade education from a country on the verge of launching total war against China--may speak to our own fractious times. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of Sino-Japanese exchange, Joshua Fogel paints a captivating portrait of two men of very different temperament, background, and political outlook. We see their friendship in ordinary moments over a cup of Karigane tea, a specially-reserved rattan chair, and the efforts at mounting exhibits of woodblock prints but also in extraordinary moments when Uchiyama protected Lu Xun from GMD spies and Japanese military police in the tumultuous years before total war. Theirs was a remarkable friendship indeed.

Download or read book All that glitters is not God written by A.K.B. Kumar and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fiction--All that Glitters Is Not God--is the reader's own story because, while reading, you'll realize that you yourself are the writer and the reader, creator and creation, hero and villain. The climax occurs in your period of living, in your native place where you're the hot and the cold, beautiful and ugly, hard and soft, rude and gentle, ups and downs, fire and water, matters supporting birth and death, also beneficial and harmful bacteria. Thus you're the god and the devil in this book. You may or may not grant this ecological novel as your autobiographical story as the narrator is a tree, and all the characters, places, times, and reasons in this book are imaginary. You'd love to imbibe the italic wording used by the tree is alien to the time and place of the occurrence of the story, especially the slang indication and figures of speech like simile and metaphor. If you find the hero tree is mettlesome and metaphysical, it is with the academic support of his mother (earth), a key protagonist. And, you know the earth is the oldest, largest, and greatest university ever established by the Almighty God.

Download or read book Unbreakable Spirit written by Charlotte Williams and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was getting into my car, which was parked in my driveway, to depart for work when all a sudden, this man I knew for so many years approached me and said, We need to talk. I need to get going for work. I will call you later, I replied in a rush. Then before I can even finish my sentence, he pulled out this big gun and aimed it straight at me. I stood there looking directly into the barrel of that gun, and I began to start shaking like a leaf. It was the most frightening thing I ever had to endure. I was so petrified that I could see my life flash right before my eyes. Just before he pulled the trigger, he had this mad-dog look on his face, and the sound of his voice was so bizarre that it sounded like the devil himself was talking to me. This was not like anything that I had ever heard before. In that same bizarre voice, he said this to me: This is for not helping me mentally and financially. Then abruptly he shot me in my right leg. Normally when you get shot in the leg, you fall and the gunshot takes your leg from right under you. But instead of me falling, I started running. I think that if I were at a track meet, I wouldve won that race, regardless of what type of race it was. I saw the smoke steaming out of the gun, and I could smell my flesh burning, as if someone had slapped some fresh meat on the grill. I felt consistent sharp pains shooting through my body, and then suddenly it felt like my whole body was on fire. I would never wish that pain on anyone, even my worst enemy.
Book Synopsis Nothing Left to Steal by : Mzilikazi wa Afrika
Download or read book Nothing Left to Steal written by Mzilikazi wa Afrika and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2014-08-20 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tell-all memoir reveals the details behind Sunday Times journalist Mzilikazi wa Afrika's exposure of the R1.7 billion lease scandal between police commissioner Bheki Cele and property tycoon Roux Shabangu, for which he was infamously arrested in 2010. It is also the riveting account of how a neglected boy in an unknown village became one of South Africa's most awarded investigative reporters and found himself at the receiving end of the corruption that had defeated those he helped put in power. Fearless in the face of corrupt authorities with sinister political motives, and fervent about justice, Wa Afrika's life was characterised by resistance to oppression and inequality from an early age. Destined to defend and uphold the principles of democracy, his story is the inspiring tale of an ordinary man, armed with a pen, who challenged the proverbial giant.
Book Synopsis Jack and Jill by : Cindy G. Larocque
Download or read book Jack and Jill written by Cindy G. Larocque and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was taking a Cree language instructor course, and for an assignment, we were to find a children’s book and translate to Cree. I chose Jack and Jill. It was short, and it was one of my favorite nursery rhymes as a child. The real author of Jack and Jill was never recorded; it was first written in the 1800s. Then it appeared in a reprint of John Newberry’s Mother Goose’s Melody. Most of the nursery rhymes were passed down verbally through generations and eventually written. The morale of this book is to please be careful in whatever you are doing; otherwise, you will be caught in troubles. If your friend is in trouble, you should help your friend in any way. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
