Book excerpt: Excerpt from Your Child From One to Six Child Care - the Preschool Years, as a sequel to Infant Care, which had first been issued in 1914. Completely rewritten in the present edition, this guide represents recent thought on various aspects of the care and development of young children. From centering attention on techniques of child care and training, the leaders in this field have now come to place their main emphasis on the relationships involved in living together in a family. Studies of children's behavior have revealed that parents' attitudes and personalities and the way they feel about their children play a much larger part in a child's healthy development than does any set of rules they may follow in bringing up their children. The present text attempts to show how emotional maturity in parents themselves can bring about the security and affectionate understanding that must underlie sound and creative family relationships. This publication was written by Mrs. Marion L. Faegre, Parent Education Consultant in the Division of Research in Child Development of the Children's Bureau, and Dr. Caroline A. Chandler, a former member of the Division, under the general supervision of Dr. Katherine Bain, Director of that Division. Marjorie Heseltine, Chief of the Bureau's Nutrition Unit, contributed the material on food and nutrition. It has been reviewed and approved by the Pediatric Advisory Committee of the Children's Bureau - Dr. Howard Childs Carpenter, for many years representing the American Child Health Association, now dissolved; Dr. Julius H. Hess, representing the section on diseases of children of the American Medical Association; Dr. Richard M. Smith, representing the American Pediatric Society; and Dr. J. H. Mason Knox, representing the American Academy of Pediatrics. It was reviewed, also, by a number of other specialists in pediatrics, child development, social work, psychology, and psychiatry. To these many persons, all of whom made helpful suggestions, grateful thanks are extended and especially to three persons who reviewed the material in great detail: Dr. C. Anderson Aldrich, Dr. Milton I. Senn, and Dr. George S. Stevenson. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child From One to Six: His Care and Training He's nearly a year old, and before you know it he won't be a baby any more. I hate to see him grow up. Mothers and fathers who talk like this do not realize how impor tant to the child's future is the growing up that he does between the first birthday and the sixth. They may give the baby the best of care and the older children the best of schooling, but they do not understand how much the child is growing in mind as well as in body during this ih-between period, the preschool years. They may even hinder his development by encouraging baby ways when they should be encouraging independence and free activity. The baby less than a year old usually gets more attention than the child who is running around. The preschool child needs as much thought on the part of the parents as does the baby, perhaps even more. When parents are making every effort to give the proper care to the child who is just leaving babyhood many questions arise: How fast should he be growing? How many teeth should he have? What food is best for him? How can he be helped to build good habits? The best answers to such questions can be had from the family doctor. This bulletin has been prepared in order to help par ents carry out the doctor's advice and to help them solve some of the ordinary problems that arise in every family. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Your Child From 6 to 12 There are many more things that we don't know than we do know about children. This is hard on us parents, because instead of being given directions about how to get our children to do this or that, or being told at what ages we can expect certain developments, we have to work more or less in the dark. How pleasant it would be if we had definite rules as to how to develop to the full our children's inborn abilities! And yet perhaps one of the most intriguing things about being a parent is the mystery and unpredictability surrounding these unique beings entrusted to our care for a few years. Maybe we are just as happy, and they a lot more so, because we don't have any magic formula by which to direct their lives. Yet there are many kinds of knowledge that would help us out enormously when it comes to the everyday problems of family life. If only we knew how to get children to want to do the_ things we feel pretty sure they'll profit by learning, such as keeping their rooms neat, and doing their home work on time! Such methods of influencing behavior will have to wait until we know a great deal more than we do now - about ourselves as well as about children. Man has uncovered more of the secrets of the universe than he has of the secret doings of the human heart and mind; it's much harder to delve into the ways people act and think and feel than it is even to find out what's going on among the stars. But thoughtful parents try honestly to put to use what knowledge we now have. We can add to what we know by close observation of our children, and so let them inform us much about their needs and what can be expected of them. Each time we learn this way we take a step forward along the road to better parenthood. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Less time is spent with his family. His experiences can no longer be held within the bounds of his home. School brings the first break with his home ties. To the adult, watching the parade of sixes out of the home along the road to growing up, this group appears not to have a care in the world. It seems that the job of the six-year-old is to grow in stature and understanding as fast as possible so that he may be ready to cope with adolescence and maturity. Book excerpt: The magic and wonder of winter’s first snowfall is perfectly captured in Ezra Jack Keat’s Caldecott Medal-winning picture book. Young readers can enjoy this celebrated classic as a full-sized board book, perfect for read-alouds of all kinds and a great gift for the holiday season. In 1962, a little boy named Peter put on his snowsuit and stepped out of his house and into the hearts of millions of readers. Universal in its appeal, this story beautifully depicts a child's wonder at a new world, and the hope of capturing and keeping that wonder forever. This big, sturdy edition will bring even more young readers to the story of Peter and his adventures in the snow. Ezra Jack Keats was also the creator of such classics as Goggles, A Letter to Amy, Pet Show!, Peter’s Chair, and A Whistle for Willie. (This book is also available in Spanish, as Un dia de nieve.) Praise for The Snowy Day: “Keats made Peter’s world so inviting that it beckons us. Perhaps the busyness of daily life in the 21st century makes us appreciate Peter even more—a kid who has the luxury of a whole day to just be outside, surrounded by snow that’s begging to be enjoyed.” —The Atlantic "Ezra Jack Keats's classic The Snowy Day, winner of the 1963 Caldecott Medal, pays homage to the wonder and pure pleasure a child experiences when the world is blanketed in snow."—Publisher's Weekly

Spiller suggests the importance of attention to the bodily welfare of a little one by telling us that to give such attention is to be just to the child. The just bodily rights which he names are these: Proper food and sufficient healthy and regular exercise for its mind and body; fresh air all day and night; regular ablutions, warmth, play, rest and comfort. He gives this weighty assurance: Danger is out of the question if you are just to your child on this and similar counts. He also goes into details and enumerates the following bodily rights of a little child: (a) The child is to be put to bed at regular times, early, whilst awake, without anyone remaining with it, and without leaving a light behind in the room. Book excerpt: In the past, correct spelling, the multiplication tables, the names of the state capitals and the American presidents were basics that all children were taught in school. Today, many children graduate without this essential knowledge. Most curricula today follow a haphazard sampling of topics with a focus on political correctness instead of teaching students how to study. Leigh Bortins, a leading figure in the homeschooling community, is having none of it. She believes that there are core areas of knowledge that are essential to master. Without knowing the multiplication tables, children can't advance to algebra. Without mastery of grammar, students will have difficulty expressing themselves. Without these essential building blocks of knowledge, students may remember information but they will never possess a broad and deep understanding of how the world works. In The Core, Bortins gives parents the tools and methodology to implement a rigorous, thorough, and broad curriculum based on the classical model, including: - Rote memorization to cement knowledge - Systematic learning of geography, historical facts, and timelines - Reading the great books and seminal historical documents instead of adaptations and abridged editions - Rigorous training in math and the natural sciences

Beginning with page 69 the thought changes and little friends and playmates out side the home life are introduced. The vocabulary presents in a visible form carefully selected words familiar to the ear. The number of words is limited and increases slowly, because perfect familiar ity with a few words is thought preferable to an uncertain grasp of a larger number. The book is from beginning to end a primer, in which the child encounters no discouraging difficulties. Another aim has been to subordinate the word list to the thought of the lessons. The subject matter is made interesting and is attractively illustrated, in order that a desire to read and a love for reading may be cultivated. The home, real child life, and the relation of this life to nature furnish the basis of the lessons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
