Book excerpt: Across the metropole, the colonies, and the wider eighteenth-century world, French children and youth participated in a diverse set of state-building initiatives, social reform programs, and imperial expansion efforts. Young Subjects explores the lives and experiences of these youth, revealing their role as active and vital agents in the shaping of early modern France. Through a set of regional case studies, Julia Gossard demonstrates how thousands of children and youth were engaged in the service of the state. In Lyon, charity schools cultivated children as agents of moral and social reform who carried their lessons home to their families. In Paris, orphaned and imprisoned youth trained in skilled trades or prepared for military service, while others were sent to the French colonies in North America as filles du roi and sturdy labourers. Young people from merchant families were recruited to serve as cultural brokers and translators on behalf of French commerical interests in the Ottoman Empire and Siam. In each case, Gossard considers how these youth played, negotiated, and sometimes resisted their roles, and what expressions of individual identity and agency were available to subjects under the legal control of others. As sources of labour, future taxpayers, colonial subjects, cultural mediators, and potential criminals, children and youth were objects of intense interest for civic authorities. Young Subjects refocuses our attention on these often overlooked historical subjects who helped to build France.

Book excerpt: With life expectancy on the rise, the proportion of people aged 60 or older is projected to account for more than one-fifth of the global population by 2050. Sleep quality is one of the most common health concerns that increases with age. Changes in sleep patterns associated with old age include disturbed sleep onset, an increase in sleep fragmentation, more frequent daytime dysfunction, and less slow-wave sleep than younger adults. Sleep is a complex physiological process critical to our health and survival; the many functions of sleep range from cerebral metabolic waste clearance and energy conservation to supporting cognitive performance and psychological well-being. Insufficient sleep has been linked to an increased risk of developing several chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, immunodeficiency, chronic pain, depression, and neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease. What remains unclear is how variations in sleep quality are related to cognitive performance and how this relationship changes with age, with several decades of research on the subject having produced mixed results. Despite this, much recent evidence indicates a strong relationship between disturbed sleep and accelerated cognitive decline in older adults. For example, several studies have found that a loss in sleep quality precedes the emergence of cognitive deficits and that sleep disturbances may therefore constitute an early marker of cognitive decline. Sleep disturbances also become more extensive with the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, which raises questions about the possibility of a bidirectional relationship.

An experimental treatment is introduced with the purpose of equating different age-groups with respect to a potentially relevant function. If the treatment results in an assimilation of the behavior of the different age-groups (age by-treatment interaction), differences in this function are con sidered as causal for the normally observed behavioral differ ence. If it does not result in an assimilation of the behavior of the different age-groups (main effect of treatment), differ ences in this function are considered as irrelevant for the nor mally observed behavioral difference. The different interpretations of age-by-treatment interactions and main effects of treatment in this kind of research are reasonable only if the experimental treatment actually results in an equalization of the age-groups with respect to the func tion of interest. As is shown, such a functional equalization can neither be demonstrated nor assumed in many cases. In such cases, studies with either age-group can be used to investigate hypotheses about potential causes for old age-related behavioral changes, studies with young subjects having important advantages over studies with old subjects. A test of causal relationships by age-by-treatment interactions is possible in cases where the experimental treatment evidently results in an equalization of the age groups with respect to the function in question. Unfortunately, the field of application for this kind of approach is rather limited.
