With more than 41 million Americans over the age of 65 in the United States, the question becomes how much (or, perhaps, what type) of memory loss is to be expected as one gets older and what should trigger a visit to the doctor. Seven Steps to Managing Your Memory addresses these key concerns and more, such as... · What are the signs that suggest your memory problems are more than just part of normal aging? · Is it normal to have concerns about your memory? · What are the markers of mild cognitive impairment, dementia, Alzheimer's, and other neurodegenerative diseases? · How should you convey your memory concerns to your doctor? · What can your doctor do to evaluate your memory? · Which healthcare professional(s) should you see? · What medicines, alternative therapies, diets, and exercises are available to improve your memory? · Can crossword puzzles, computer brain-training games, memory aids, and strategies help strengthen your memory? · What other resources are available when dealing with memory loss? Seven Steps to Managing Your Memory is written in an easy-to-read yet comprehensive style, featuring clinical vignettes and character-based stories that provide real-life examples of how to successfully manage age-related memory loss.

Book excerpt: These poems were written by a retired physician who had never had any experience as a professional writer. He had always had a love of poetry, but didn't have the time to pursue this endeavor. He learned early on that he had an aptitude for poetic writing. He was encouraged by his wife and many close friends who read some of his first poems. These poems cover a large range of events which could be encountered in life. The poems are encompassing enough that people from many cultural and ethnic backgrounds should be able to find them quite interesting. They are not based in totality on any specific occurrences which the author encountered. His life as an Afro- American, growing up in the South during the era of Segregation and during the Great Depression did have a great influence on his writing.

Book excerpt: “Colm Tóibín’s beautiful, subtle illumination of Henry James’s inner life” (The New York Times) captures the loneliness and hope of a master of psychological subtlety whose forays into intimacy inevitably fail those he tried to love. Beautiful and profoundly moving, The Master tells the story of Henry James, a man born into one of America’s first intellectual families who leaves his country in the late nineteenth century to live in Paris, Rome, Venice, and London among privileged artists and writers. The emotional intensity of Tóibín's portrait of James is riveting. Time and again, James, a master of psychological subtlety in his fiction, proves blind to his own heart and incapable of reconciling his dreams of passion with his own fragility. With stunningly resonant prose, “The Master is unquestionably the work of a first-rate novelist: artful, moving, and very beautiful” (The New York Times Book Review).

Book excerpt: Who says facts can't be fun? This book was written for those who are of a conservative mind set but are still wandering aimlessly in the world of politics and do not have a clue as to the policies, missions and distinct differences between the Democratic and Republican parties. Infusing sarcastic political satire into the fray, the author has created a manifesto which is quite humorous yet extremely informative. An absolute must for those who have their hearts in the right place but have the political I.Q. of a salamander!

Book excerpt: Come with me on a journey. It isn't a very long journey when compared to your life as a whole. In fact, it is a very short one. But, it may be the most exciting, most revealing, most fulfilling, and ultimately the most important journey you will ever take. Come with me on a journey to the center of your mind. This book is designed to be your guide to your new, better future by helping you redefine your beliefs about yourself. Do you feel that you could be and do so much more if only you could control your fears and look at yourself as the winner you would like to be? Fear Is The Mind Killer, isn't it? It is the 'little death' that robs you of your joy, limits your friendships, and keeps you under the thumb, so to speak, of life. Instead of Fear being your Mind Killer, you have the power to use that fear to be your Mind Builder. You can change the paradigms of your fears from those that limit you to those that actually EMPOWER you. You have the power within yourself to be so much more. This book is designed to show you the way to the life you have always dreamed of having. It is my personal mission through these pages to give you the methods of becoming all you want to become. To accomplish your dreams for the benefit of yourself and everyone around you, especially those you love. If each of us becomes all we are capable of being we can truly change the world. -Dennis Allyn

He is the deity Mary Myatt and John Tomsett have adopted as their god of the curriculum. Their Huh series of books focuses on how practitioners design the curriculum for the young people in their schools. The Huh project is founded on conversations with colleagues doing great work across the education sector. In SEND Huh, Mary Myatt and John Tomsett discuss curriculum provision for pupils with additional needs with some of the leading experts in the field. Mary and John interviewed pupils, parents, teachers, headteachers, CEOs, educational consultants and lecturers. They then edited the transcriptions of those interviews to provide an ambitious, thoughtful, nuanced and challenging vision of what the best possible provision looks like for children with additional learning needs. The challenging conversations that comprise SEND Huh paint an inspiring picture that is hugely hopeful for the future of SEND curriculum provision in our schools.

Book excerpt: America, still today, for many people throughout the world remains an attraction; instead, for many others, they see America as a beacon of hope from political and religious oppressions to the needs to overcome hunger from their countries poor economic conditions. Nevertheless, "Remembering Yesterday," talks about a timid little immigrant boy named Gregorio; his wonderful protective mother; his working, dedicated, and honest father, who was forced to immigrate to six different countries before coming to America, looking for work so his family could survive; and his two siblings: Andrea, the daring one; and Matteo, the thick headed one. The book opens up with the main character Gregorio Di Nardo as an adult teaching English as a Second Language at a local Community College, to immigrant adult students. the author then moves to narrate more about the main character as a little boy growing up in his little village. The story continues with some surprising and unexpected information: Gregorio and his family would be leaving their little town for America. The news upsets the little boy for abandoning his present existence, his friends, the piazza, and his small house; but his mother and siblings however, were happy as they could be to leave the poor conditions behind and embrace new ones knowing they were starting from nothing. The narration picks up with a long dangerous journey to America: first on a train, then on transatlantic boat named "Vulcania", and finally growing up to adulthood in the city of Newark with no language, no friends, no one to cling to except his parents and two siblings. The family settles in the city of Newark, where they lived and experienced Newark reality at its best and safest period; as well as its downfall. It is here where they first experienced one of the many gloomy embarrassments, despondent, sour moments of racism and hardships. The desperate souls came with nothing except their clothes, a strong will to work and produce; and to overcome the hunger they left behind due to poor economic conditions they were subjected to.

Book excerpt: This is a story of fiction but inspired by the love of trucking and simple rural farm life as it was in the 50s and 60s.A few hours east of Fort Stockton, Texas, Julie saw the sign indicating she was still a long way from San Antonio. Her eyes felt tired. Several miles back, she had nodded off just a second, and it scared her so bad she almost went off the road into a rocky hillside. Second thoughts haunted her mind about the decision she had made to try for the Alamo city tonight. It was now 11:00 PM and the rain hadn’t let up making the road almost impossible to see. She cranked up the heater as the outside temperature dropped considerably colder the further east she traveled. She picked up a Del Rio station on the radio and turned the volume up to keep the cab filled with noise. The country music eased her tired mind as the song play-ing was one of her favorites “yeah,†she thought “that’s me, Julie Dickinson with nothing but eighteen wheels under my seat and miles of highway ahead.â€
