Book Synopsis Post offices - securing their future by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Business and Enterprise Committee
Download or read book Post offices - securing their future written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Business and Enterprise Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009-07-07 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post office network has been reduced to 12,000 post offices and outreach services, though the Government has set access criteria for the network to ensure that it covers the whole country. This report examines what services could be provided by the network to ensure its future viability and what people want from their post office network. There is no shortage of demand for more services. The network can and should provide: mail services; financial services (especially enhanced banking services); local authority services; central government services; and broader community services. Many of the problems facing the network are a consequence of the Government moving services online, and so reducing Post Office Ltd's income. The Committee believes the Government has seriously underestimated the potential of the network to serve as a link between government and its citizens. The Digital Britain report (Cm. 7650, ISBN 9780101765022) sees the internet as the primary means of access to public services. The Committee support e-delivery of public services but however much the Government may want to encourage digital inclusion, it also needs to prevent social exclusion. 40 per cent of households do not have internet access. Although some departments are seizing the opportunity a truly national network offers to allow easy access to their services, many government departments are woefully unimaginative about the needs of their customers, and show too little respect for members of the public's right to choose how to deal with the Government.

Book excerpt: Roger Fraser is convinced he is cursed by unforeseen situations constantly bringing his integrity into disrepute, especially in social situations. His family thinks he is gaff prone, but if they could see him in the business arena, they would find Roger is an unassailable trouble-shooter, trampling on Essex boy traders, and solving delicate problems with aplomb. Join the Fraser family and their assorted band of odd-ball friends and work colleagues, as our hero steers his way through some tricky situations, but nonetheless, always seems to get the rough end of the pineapple and ends up licking his wounds in the doghouse.

Book Synopsis English Intonation PB and Audio CD by : J. C. Wells
Download or read book English Intonation PB and Audio CD written by J. C. Wells and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intonation - the rise and fall of pitch in our voices - plays a crucial role in how we express meaning. This accessible introduction shows students how to recognize and reproduce the intonation patterns of English, providing clear explanations of what they mean and how they are used. It looks in particular at three key functions of intonation - to express our attitude, to structure our messages to one another, and to focus attention on particular parts of what we are saying. An invaluable guide to how English intonation works, it is complete with extensive exercises, drills and practice material, encouraging students to produce and understand the intonation patterns for themselves. The accompanying CD contains a wealth of spoken examples, clearly demonstrating English intonation in context. Drawing on the perspectives of both language teaching and linguistics, this textbook will be welcomed by both learners of English, and beginning undergraduates in phonetics and linguistics.
Download or read book Yorkshire's War written by Tim Lynch and published by Amberley Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 7.30 a.m. on Saturday 1 July 1916, the British Expeditionary Force rose from its trenches and stepped into a blizzard of fire that would echo for generations to come. Setting out that day were regiments from every part of the country but, with no fewer than twenty-nine battalions, Yorkshire contributed the largest contingent, and the county's close-knit mill towns and pit villages paid a heavy price. Two months later, Zeppelins brought the war to streets still mourning their dead and added women and children to the growing casualty lists. This was total war. Using letters, diaries, archives, newspapers and local histories, Yorkshire's War tells the story of a county at war: of children sewing sandbags; of old men guarding the coast; of young men going off to war and of their wives, mothers and sweethearts finding new ways to cope with near-starvation rations, the constant fear for their loved ones and finding strength in the new roles opening up for them. This is their story...
