Book Synopsis A Flick of Sunshine by : Alexander Jackson Hill
Download or read book A Flick of Sunshine written by Alexander Jackson Hill and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true and remarkable life of Richard Willis (Will) Jackson, an intrepid seaman from one of the leading shipbuilding families in 19th century Maine, whose exploits and adventures in the oceans of the world would rival characters straight out of the lives and imaginations of Joseph Conrad and Jack London. Will Jackson survived a harrowing shipwreck in the Marshall Islands, being washed overboard rounding Cape Horn and running down Alaskan glaciers over a tragically shortened life that ended in a most bizarre and pedestrian incident on the eve of realizing his life’s ambition: appointment as master of a ship. After nine months of sometimes perilous life among natives in the South Sea islands in 1884, captured in chapters of a book he helped write, Jackson served on a series of large ships and coastal schooners – all based in the post-Gold Rush boomtown of San Francisco – that took him up and down the west coast from Alaska to Mexico and to the four corners of the earth. His faithful letters to his family in Maine and a diary provide a colorful background for a compelling portrait of an extraordinary young man of character and independent spirit, intellect and curiosity, no small ambition and that most admirable of traits, an abiding sense of humor.

The first night on the island after the wreck of the Rainier was anxiously passed, all hands keeping watch, expecting every moment the natives would attack and kill us; but the following day dispelled all fears, as they appeared friendly and brought cocoanuts and pandanas, but would give nothing except in return for clothing or some small article. The king, however, seemed to think he would reap a rich reward in the course of time; so he sent the captain plenty of cocoanuts. The captain then hired the king to go down to the wreck and see if anything could be obtained, promising him in payment one axe and three muskets when he should leave the island. Twelve rifles had been saved from the ship and these were kept loaded in the captain's house, ready at a moment's notice. The king consented to go down himself in the big canoe. So, taking the three boats which had been saved in tow, he proceeded down the lagoon to the wreck. The second and third officers, with some of the men, went in the canoe with the king. The canoe with the boats in tow returned at night with some provisions and some of the head sails. The second officer reported the main and mizzenmasts gone, the stern of the ship smashed in, and the cargo fast washing out. The provisions had all been taken from the lazerette and carried forward during the night after the ship had struck. The next day the boats went down, but got nothing but a few cases of oil, and reported the ship fast breaking up, the seas washing clean over her. So the good ship Rainier was a total wreck. The first Sunday was a gloomy one, but the captain's orders were duly observed, and so we waited for the morrow to make plans as to what course to pursue. On Monday morning...
