Book excerpt: For more than eighteen years now my humble column has appeared, on a bi-weekly basis, in The WORLD, Central Vermont’s favorite newspaper. (Note: If you looked for the column every other week, but started on the wrong week, you missed it completely.) This book is a collection of many of those writings, so you have another chance. The earliest ones are not here, as pasting stories from slate tablets onto word documents is a difficult thing to do. -If you find any bits of wisdom between these covers, it’s not my fault.-

Download or read book Moguls written by Michael Benson and published by Citadel. This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sensational, lurid, and wickedly entertaining true story of the brothers who invented Hollywood to become the godfathers of cinema - movie moguls Nicholas and Joseph Schenck - studded with glamorous stars, scandals, mobsters, murders, and one legendary blond bombshell. . . Groundbreaking pioneers of the Hollywood Dream Factory, Joseph and Nicholas Schenck may not have been household names like the Warner brothers or Louis B. Mayer, but they were infinitely more powerful, influential—and ruthless. A pair of Russian immigrants with giant ambitions, the Schencks turned their small nickelodeon business in New York’s Bowery into a partnership with Loew’s movie theaters and a controlling interest in three major studios: MGM, 20th Century Fox, and United Artists. They painted the silver screen silver, laid the foundations for the all-powerful studio system, and ruled a global movie empire from their Gatsby-sized mansions on the East and West coasts. The Schencks had become moguls. Their story is the stuff of legends—and their scandals are among the greatest stories Hollywood never told. This riveting, behind-the-scenes account reveals the suprising truth about: The union-busting mob deal that landed Joe Schenck in federal prison for four years—on tax evasion charges including deductions for a menage a trois. The cutthroat and merciless political maneuvering that defined the Hollywood studio heads. The lurid murder charges against silent film star “Fatty” Arbuckle—whose legal defense was paid for by Joe Schenck. Joe’s secret infatuation with Marilyn Monroe, even though Marilyn’s mother named her Norma after Joe’s wife! The brothers’ ingenious creation of the Academy of Motion Pictures and the Oscars—and indomitable control over the entire film industry. From the earliest days of silent films and the swinging era of the Roaring Twenties, through the Golden Age of the studio system and the patriotic call of WWII, to the Red Scare paranoia of the McCarthy years, the history of the Schenck brothers is the story of Hollywood itself—and the endurng power of the American Dream. Moguls is a must-read for film fans, history buffs, and anyone who loves the movies.

Book Synopsis Curio's Search for Cool by : Mike Harris
Download or read book Curio's Search for Cool written by Mike Harris and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-11 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether we are male or female, young or old, a young boy's search for respect is something we can all relate to. The search for significance is an innate desire that permeates our choices, even though we don't always realize it. Especially when what we bring to the table (our natural strengths) aren't so obvious and positive attention isn't so automatic. And so it was with Curio. This is a story of an adolescent's search for himself, told through the bedtime talks between a single, widowed father and his son. Not only does it portray a healthy relationship between father and son, it uncovers many of the paradoxes associated with our search for a respectful identity. Each night, Dad spurs his son on like Jesus would have, with just enough insight to prod Curio's desire for more. Until finally, Curio surprises his father with wisdom straight out of Heaven itself.

Download or read book 406 written by Joseph J. Badowski and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-03-18 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a historical fiction that I have written about the 1960 baseball World Series, specifically about game 7 of that series, that many baseball experts feel was the greatest game ever played in the history of Major League Baseball. The seventh game of that World Series was played on a sunny fall day on October 13, 1960, at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. On that date, around 3:00 p.m., Bill Mazeroski, the second baseman for the Pirates, hit a walk-off home run in the top of the ninth inning to win the game. On the second pitch thrown by Yankee pitcher Ralph Terry, Mazeroski hit a ball over the 402 sign in left field, which gave the Pirates an improbable and almost miraculous win over the heavily favored New York Yankees. This home run was the highlight of the many strange and dramatic plays that took place during game 7, which makes that game one for all ages and one that would make for an excellent script for any Hollywood movie. This book, however, is about more than the 1960 World Series. It is also about two nine-year-old boys who meet each other in the summer of 1960 and who become close friends, united by not only baseball but also by a crisis that plagues one of the main character's family. Daniel Pryzinski and Adam Brodziak are the two fictional characters in this book who meet each other by chance during the summer of 1960. Daniel lives in the Polish Hill section of Pittsburgh, while Adam lives in a small rural coal-mining town in western Pennsylvania, sixty miles from Pittsburgh. The two meet each other by chance when Adam's family is invited to stay with Daniel's family while they are attending a Polish Festival in Pittsburgh. While staying with the Pryzinski family, the Brodziaks discover a dark secret. Daniel's father, Peter, is an alcoholic whose drinking problems are so bad that it threatens to destroy the Pryzinski family. Daniel's mother, Pauline, is desperately trying to hold the family together but is on the verge of leaving her husband. She is a devout Catholic, so that decision was one that she did not want to make. Besides, she loved her husband so much that she was willing to do anything to help him recover from his drinking problem. Through the intervention of the Brodziaks and their family doctor, Tom Slevic, they are able to convince Peter to admit himself to an Alcohol Rehab Center in Somerset, Pennsylvania. Although the focus of this book is the seventh game of the 1960 World Series, it is the relationship of the fictional characters that will show the reader how reliance upon family and friends and hope in God and faith can serve to change the lives of so many whose loved ones are affected by alcohol or other types of addiction or substance abuse.

Book Synopsis The Best Little Baseball Town in the World by : Gaylon H. White
Download or read book The Best Little Baseball Town in the World written by Gaylon H. White and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-04-21 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crowley Millers were the talk of minor league baseball in the 1950s, with crowds totaling nearly 10 times Crowley’s population and earning Crowley the nickname of “The Best Little Baseball Town in the World.” The Best Little Baseball Town in the World: The Crowley Millers and Minor League Baseball in the 1950s tells the fun, quirky story of Crowley, Louisiana, in the fifties, a story that reads more like fiction than nonfiction. The Crowley Millers’ biggest star was Conklyn Meriwether, a slugger who became infamous after he retired when he killed his in-laws with an axe. Their former manager turned out to be a con man, dying in jail while awaiting trial on embezzlement charges. The 1951 team was torn to pieces after their young centerfielder was struck and killed by lightning during a game. But aside from the tragedy and turmoil, the Crowley Millers also played some great baseball and were the springboard to stardom for George Brunet and Dan Pfister, two Crowley pitchers who made it to the majors. Interviews with players from the team bring to light never-before-heard stories and inside perspectives on minor league baseball in the fifties, including insight into the social and racial climate of the era, and the inability of baseball in the fifties to help players deal with off-the-field problems. Written by respected minor-league baseball historian Gaylon H. White, The Best Little Baseball Town in the World is a fascinating tale for baseball fans and historians alike.
