With this the workplace culture is also changing. The capitalist work culture is also affecting the socio-cultural status of Indians. At the capitalist workplace, employees are working like machine. The work culture is now marked by high payments, great perks and incentives as well as other facilities. However, the negative aspect of this culture is seen in long working hours, less family bonding, neglect of family responsibilities, difficulty in taking care of children, health issues at early age and increased stress and anxiety. There are several studies showing that capitalist work place is affecting not only the labour but also the culture market. It is creating difficulty in balancing work with family. The respective roles to be played within the workplace and the family has spill over each other. Work has entered the homes of several working people, who find it difficult to cope with the dual responsibility of work and family life. The present work is aimed at exploring the work family conflict faced by Indian working women in the current scenario.
Book Synopsis Gender and Family Issues in the Workplace by : Francine D. Blau
Download or read book Gender and Family Issues in the Workplace written by Francine D. Blau and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 1997-06-26 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, as married women commonly pursue careers outside the home, concerns about their ability to achieve equal footing with men without sacrificing the needs of their families trouble policymakers and economists alike. In 1993 federal legislation was passed that required most firms to provide unpaid maternity leave for up to twelve weeks. Yet, as Gender and Family Issues in the Workplace reveals, motherhood remains a primary obstacle to women's economic success. This volume offers fascinating and provocative new analyses of women's status in the labor market, as it explores the debate surrounding parental leave: Do policies that mandate extended leave protect jobs and promote child welfare, or do they sidetrack women's careers and make them less desirable employees? An examination of the disadvantages that women—particularly young mothers—face in today's workplace sets the stage for the debate. Claudia Goldin presents evidence that female college graduates are rarely able to balance motherhood with career track employment, and Jane Waldfogel demonstrates that having children results in substantially lower wages for women. The long hours demanded by managerial and other high powered professions further penalize women who in many cases still bear primary responsibility for their homes and children. Do parental leave policies improve the situation for women? Gender and Family Issues in the Workplace offers a variety of perspectives on this important question. Some propose that mandated leave improves women's wages by allowing them to preserve their job tenure. Other economists express concern that federal leave policies prevent firms and their workers from acting on their own particular needs and constraints, while others argue that because such policies improve the well-being of children they are necessary to society as a whole. Olivia Mitchell finds that although the availability of unpaid parental leave has sharply increased, only a tiny percentage of workers have access to paid leave or child care assistance. Others caution that the current design of family-friendly policies may promote gender inequality by reinforcing the traditional division of labor within families. Parental leave policy is a complex issue embedded in a tangle of economic and social institutions. Gender and Family Issues in the Workplace offers an innovative and up-to-date investigation into women's chances for success and equality in the modern economy.
Book Synopsis Women in the Civil Services by : Trijita Gonsalves
Download or read book Women in the Civil Services written by Trijita Gonsalves and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the personal and professional lives of women in the Indian Civil Services and analyses the dynamics of gender and workplace identities for women in government. Based on first-hand interviews of women civil servants at various levels and ages, this book presents a narrative of their work conditions, the degrees of authority they exercise and their perceptions of themselves – in relation to their children, husbands, family, male and female colleagues, politicians and the public at large. It addresses pertinent issues like work–family balance, workforce diversity, equal employment opportunity, sexual harassment at the workplace, among others. Through this research, the author addresses questions such as, do women in public administration think differently from their male colleagues? And do they exercise different leadership styles, prioritise different issues, approach problems differently, make decisions in markedly different ways and play an actively representative role? This book helps to identify major obstacles that hinder the participation of women in decision-making and uncovers the bottlenecks that impede women’s advancement in the civil services specifically to policymaking positions. An important and timely study, this book will be useful for scholars and researchers of gender studies, public administration, management and leadership studies. It will also be of interest to organisations working on issues of equal opportunity and affirmative action in public institutions.

Does the organizational context, such as organizational culture, reward systems, and leadership, contribute to the well-being of working-women? What impact does the national context have on the well-being of working women? And finally, how can public policies help enhance the well-being of working women? Book Synopsis The Cambridge Handbook of the Global Work–Family Interface by : Kristen M. Shockley
Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of the Global Work–Family Interface written by Kristen M. Shockley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge Handbook of the Global Work-Family Interface is a response to growing interest in understanding how people manage their work and family lives across the globe. Given global and regional differences in cultural values, economies, and policies and practices, research on work-family management is not always easily transportable to different contexts. Researchers have begun to acknowledge this, conducting research in various national settings, but the literature lacks a comprehensive source that aims to synthesize the state of knowledge, theoretical progression, and identification of the most compelling future research ideas within field. The Cambridge Handbook of the Global Work-Family Interface aims to fill this gap by providing a single source where readers can find not only information about the general state of global work-family research, but also comprehensive reviews of region-specific research. It will be of value to researchers, graduate students, and practitioners of applied and organizational psychology, management, and family studies.
