Book excerpt: Women managers in Thai Five-Star hotels in Bangkok do experience some degree of work and family conflict. In terms of the antecedents of work and family conflict, the number of hour worked, flexible vacation, and need for a full-time maid have the greatest impact on time, organizational and personal related factors respectively. Partner and family support have the greatest influence in reducing the level of work and family conflict of Thai women managers. From interviewing four Human Resource Directors of these hotels, they believed that supportive training programs offered to all employees would benefit women managers as well. What is surprising is that there are few signs of any new strategic human resource policies to redress these work and family conflicts in Thai Five-Star hotels in Bangkok. This is important because work and family conflict is a common problem among female employees. As well as being socially undesirable, such conflict also negatively impacts a number of other areas. The research suggests a studying work and family conflict has the potential to benefit both organizations and employees.

They believed that women managers will benefit from the training programs because women managers will develop their managerial skills to help them balance their work and family more professionally. Supportive development programs were offered to all women managers such as time management skills, coaching, mentoring, English language training, and team work. This is important because all organisations need to encourage their very best women managers to stay rather than quit to other careers. In addition, the hotel industry can play a leading role in assisting and supporting females in establishing and maintaining work and family balance.

Book excerpt: This research is dedicated to identifying female managers' career status and provides a profile of female managers in the hospitality industry in China. It investigates the career barriers that hinder female managers' career progression and determines the factors that are needed to encourage career progression for female managers in the hospitality industry. A quantitative research methodology was utilized; 300 questionnaires were collected from 40 five star hotels in Beijing. Findings showed that female managers' career status was still not high. Three factors (lack of work-life balance, lack of networking and gender discrimination) are found in the hospitality industry that hindered female managers' career progression. Communication skills and people consciousness are two other factors suggested by most respondents that have positive impact on their career progression. It is anticipated that the findings of this research may provide some useful suggestions to female managers who want to make career progression in the hospitality industry in China.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of leadership style on employee job satisfaction in five-star hotels. A questionnaire consisted of 57 items based on five-point likert scale (from strongly disagree to strongly agree) was used to measure both leadership style and job satisfaction from employees' perspectives. Using random sampling, the researcher distributed 350 questionnaires, 220 of which were completed. The obtained data from the questionnaires are investigated through the SPSS statistical packaged software. The empirical results indicated that two types of leadership styles, namely, democratic and laissez-faire were found to have direct positive significant relationships with employees' job satisfaction. The findings showed that the dominant leadership style was democratic and employees were moderately satisfied with their job. This implies that democratic leadership is deemed suitable for managing hotels. The study's results show that different leadership style will have different impacts on employee job satisfaction. An interesting finding is that democratic leadership has a stronger influence on job satisfaction than laissez-faire leadership does. As a result, by adopting the appropriate leadership styles, leaders can affect employee job satisfaction.
