Download or read book Tai-Pan written by James Clavell and published by Blackstone Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 889 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sweeping epic novel of the founding of Hong Kong, by the #1 New York Times bestselling author and unparalleled master of historical fiction, James Clavell “There can only be one Tai-Pan.” Dirk Struan rose from humble beginnings to build Struan & Company, also known as the Noble House, into the world’s largest Far East trading company. He is now the Tai-Pan—Supreme Leader—of all Tai-Pans in China. Along the way, however, he made a powerful enemy. Tyler Brock, Struan’s rival from their early opium-smuggling days, also heads a large trading fleet, second in size only to Struan’s. But it is not only silks and spices that drive their mutual companies’ wealth—the opium trade is still booming. War between England and China might be over, but the hostilities remain. Struan and Brock come to control much of England’s trade with China yet neither can control their desires or their hatred of each other. Over the years, their two families will cross paths, threatening to rip both apart, with reverberations that will echo across the generations. Struan must fight to save his company and his family, or risk seeing everything he has created destroyed at the hands of his sworn enemy. Ambition, political intrigue, and love and lust weave their way throughout the novel the New York Times called, “grand entertainment...packed with action...with blood and sin, treachery and conspiracy, sex and murder.” East and West come together in an opulent and intricately plotted narrative. A tour-de-force of historical fiction, rich in detail yet eminently readable, Tai-Pan will stay with you long after the final page.

Download or read book Tapestry written by Jerry Carrier and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American culture is a rich and complex tapestry of colorful threads from at least five continents, and in recent decades increased immigration has meant that the pace of change is accelerating. It's time for us to get to know ourselves and really appreciate this rich, vast, and rapidly expanding culture. This book explores the contributions of Hispanic, Black, Native American, Oriental, Jewish and other cultures to a nation where many people still focus on the influences of Christian, capitalist, and ethnically European (particularly British) heritage. Written for a general audience, 'Tapestry' explores the myths of American culture and reveals surprising cultural roots including the fact that American democracy and representative government were inspired more by Native American ways than by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Capitalism has become an unchallenged idea, a cultural universal, and so dogmatic that coupled with Christianity it has become America's dominant religion. However, capitalism is a 19th-century concept created for the bygone industrial era. Now the system is showing decay. Unfortunately, America is an ethnocentric country whose jingoistic belief in its own exceptionalism may prevent needed change. American culture has been both inclusive and intolerant. Today it stands at a crossroad and must decide what road to take. Are we to enter a renaissance or a dark age?

Book Synopsis Linguophilosophic Parameters of English Innovations in Technosphere by : Rusudan Makhachashvili
Download or read book Linguophilosophic Parameters of English Innovations in Technosphere written by Rusudan Makhachashvili and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph researches the aspects of the English vocabulary development processes in the sphere of new computer technologies. The primary supposition of cyber word-stock terminological nature leads into the study of both linguistic (morphological and semantic) and ontological paradigmatic parameters of innovative cyber-vocabulary of the English language. Linguistically, the development of English cyber-vocabulary acquires an ambivalent character. Primarily, the sources of English computer vocabulary root in the conventional word-formation types. However, the enrichment process of the computer terminology of English incorporates the emergence of the word-formation ways and means, authentic for the given lexical sub-system. Moreover, the evolutionary progress of cybervocabulary determines the new conceptual approach to the “word-formation element” notion. The ontological paradigmatic parameters of English cyber-vocabulary are featured from the following perspectives: lexico-semantic perception of basic metaphysic dimensions of the technosphere (that being “space” and “time”) and the anthropologic terminological categorization of technosphere, thus both the anthropocentric and the sociocentric paradigmatics of English innovative cyber-vocabulary being reflected.
