This book was released on 2016-09-24 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an ethnographic contribution to research on children’s consumption, family life and happiness. Various and shifting notions of happiness are explored, as well as conditions for and challenges to happiness, through an analysis of video-recorded interviews and mobile ethnography conducted in two of the most popular theme parks in Sweden. Initially, the study outlines how previous research has conceptualized happiness in association with time and place in a rather static way. Based on a treatise of notions of happiness in philosophy and the social sciences, there is a turn in this thesis towards practice. It generates fundamental knowledge about the complexity of happiness. By employing this approach, it is possible to highlight how happiness is enacted as part of and in relation to ideals of family life, time, childhood, money, consumption, experiences and material things. As we explore the practices of children and their families, we discover that shifting meanings of happiness are located in contemporary culture, where emotions and consumption are of central importance. The approach is interdisciplinary, and draws on theoretical and methodological contributions in sociology, anthropology and Science and Technology Studies (STS). Notions of meshwork and enactment become important for the exploration of happiness as a complex and changing matter, which productively involves social relations and material things. Throughout the thesis there is a dialogue with previous research on happiness, consumption and childhood which highlights the importance of exploring messy practices, in movement. It is argued that explorations of practice contribute to a critical understanding of how happiness and contemporary ideals of childhood can be approached – through consumption and as part of citizenship in a consumer society where happiness is of central importance.

Book excerpt: Who was Jeffrey Epstein? A Pulitzer Prize–nominated journalist unearths never-before-reported details in the most comprehensive account yet of the disgraced financier’s life, death, and criminal web, including the role of Ghislaine Maxwell. An ID Book Club Selection • Featured in the Peacock original documentary series Epstein’s Shadow: Ghislaine Maxwell By now, the basic contours of Jeffrey Epstein’s horrendous crimes—his decades-long serial abuse of young women and underage girls—are familiar. But for all that has been written about Epstein since his shocking death in a lower Manhattan jail cell, an astonishing amount remains unknown. A shy Brooklyn kid turned renegade financier, Jeffrey Epstein never wanted to play by the rules of polite society. He was elusive in life and he has remained just as elusive in death. What is known is that he had amassed nearly $600 million by the time of his death. That fortune allowed Epstein to pursue a privileged, secretive life, jetting between his fortress-like homes in Manhattan, New Mexico, and Little St. James, his private island. Behind these closed doors, Epstein socialized with scientists and world leaders and preyed on powerless young women. In The Spider, Barry Levine shines a light into the darkest corners of Epstein’s world, including • Epstein’s young adulthood and earliest accusations of sexual misconduct • the murky sources of Epstein’s fortune and business dealings • Epstein’s circle of confidantes and employees, particularly the nature of his long relationship with socialite Ghislaine Maxwell • his ties to powerful men, including Bill Clinton, Prince Andrew, Les Wexner, and Donald Trump • Epstein’s last hours as a free man in Paris and the secret operation to arrest him at a New Jersey airport before he could flee • new details on Epstein’s final days in jail and the mystery surrounding his death Featuring rare and never-before-seen photographs, The Spider exposes how Epstein operated and evaded justice for so long—and how he drew so many others into his criminal web.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of four national book awards! Revised First Edition, 2022 Is It You, Me, or Adult ADHD? has helped thousands of readers worldwide to understand how this highly variable syndrome affects them. Professionals and couples who have elevated their lives with its wisdom recommend it to others. In this highly endorsed, clearly written, and comprehensive guide, Gina Pera guides you in making sense of your own Adult ADHD Roller Coaster. She helps you to: —View ADHD as a variable syndrome affecting individuals, not clones —Realize how a later-in-life ADHD diagnosis creates additional issues —Revise misinterpretations of symptoms, forged long ago, that can thwart progress now —Heal poor coping responses and dysfunctional interaction cycles, as individuals and couples —Implement practical supports to completing routine tasks and reaching long-term goals, with teamwork! —Appreciate how poorly managed ADHD can also negatively affect the spouses and other loved ones. —Delve into "denial's" dual nature — physiological and psychological — and reach through it —Adopt proven approaches that remain extremely rare in clinical settings The science has been clear since 1994, when Adult ADHD was declared a medical diagnosis. Still, the public harbors misconceptions, and that means millions suffer needlessly. That includes millions of couples who can't understand why their lives together are so hard—often despite many attempts at therapy. The simple truth is: Everyone knows someone with adult ADHD. Yet we often misattribute the symptoms to anxiety, depression, or even laziness, selfishness, “addictive personality,” or moodiness. Some assume that ADHD means "little boys with ants in their pants." In fact, childhood hyperactivity goes "underground" as the person matures, resulting in a mentally restless state. Meticulously researched and written by Gina Pera, Is It You, Me, or Adult ADHD? helps you recognizing the behaviors where you least expect them and developing compassion for everyone wrestling with unrecognized ADHD symptoms. It also offers: —Explanations from preeminent experts —Plenty of real-life details —Easy-to-understand, detailed advice on the best treatment options and practical solutions. The revolutionary message is one of hope for millions of people—and a joyous opportunity for a better life.
