Book excerpt: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) occurs in 10-69% of the world's population (World Health Organization, 2002). Women are at much greater risk of experiencing IPV than men. Physical, sexual, and emotional abuse has a psychological impact, not only upon the individual, but family members and future inter-familial generations. The symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, such as feelings of helplessness and emotional numbing may impede a woman's decision making and help-seeking activities. Additionally, it has been found that about half of women who experience abuse have children, and that children witnessing IPV are at a greater risk for abuse, behavioral problems, and psychological problems. The following study addresses how women consider their children in their decision making processes. Two-hundred semi-structured interviews were analyzed using NVivo8 computer software (2008), inter-rating reliabilities, and grounded theory. Themes regarding the stay-leave decision making process for women with children are presented. Additionally, quantitative analysis was used to examine significant differences between women with children and women without children on the variables of length of time spent in the relationship and on the severity of violence experienced by women. Results indicate that women with children remain in violent relationships longer and endure a higher frequency of severe abuse.

Research suggests that one in four women have experienced violence and abuse by an intimate partner. Although researchers have examined domestic violence, including reasons why women remain in abusive relationships, there is insufficient understanding that addresses the deep-seated trauma that women experience, as well as the fear of being homeless. This study explored the experiences of women who have lived with the trauma of domestic violence and the way in which social workers, social agencies, and the criminal justice system understand the trauma and the often devastating effect of becoming homeless or living in a shelter. Results of this study indicate that the fear of homelessness is a significant factor for the victims of intimate partner violence and remains a reason why many women stay in the abusive relationships rather than leaving the family home. The psychological abuse is often exacerbated by the statement made by others, "Why doesn't she just leave?" Implications for social policy include development and initiatives for increased housing and fair housing policies that address the problem of domestic violence and homelessness. Findings indicate the need for a clinical understanding of the re-traumatizing of the family that frequently takes place due to homelessness. Comprehensive coordination of social work therapy and advocacy programs for better housing programs and trauma sensitive laws are necessary. The research method used in this study is an auto-ethnography literature review approach that allowed me to conceptualize through a personal narrative my lived experience of intimate partner violence fifty (50) years ago. The narrative was analyzed for emerging themes with a special focus on the trauma of homelessness. Research suggests that domestic violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women (National Coalition for the Homeless, 2009).

These were some of the questions that arose during these initial meetings. A series of weekly meetings stretched over the ensuing years-interrupted temporarily by various exigencies-and led eventually to a research program that grew to involve a number of students and faculty colleagues. At the time, of course, we did not regard our work as a "research program"; rather, even as our experiments proceeded to answer two burning questions at a time, they managed to raise three or four new issues that we had not anticipated before.
