Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to research whether and how the images of women in beauty advertisements in the British and French Vogue Magazines have changed over time, particularly between the decades 1920 to 1930 and 1995 to 2005. Moreover, it was the goal to find out more about whether the historical, political and social context was reflected in women s images in advertising in the decades investigated. All beauty-related advertisements of these magazines and decades were categorized into role model types. This categorization led to a comparison of the two decades researched and revealed that although, during the course of the 20th century, women have achieved a number of significant rights, they are, nevertheless, objectified to a greater extent today than was the case in the 1920s. This objectification of women can cause severe psychosomatic disorders which proves how powerful the position of the media in society is. Clearly, the media and their controlling gatekeepers such as editors, who dictate the beauty ideals, are not only to blame for such consequences, as these ideals are readily accepted and followed by the readers of the magazines."

Women's stereotypes all over pages of magazines, newspapers, catalogues and etc; they are all along the streets on billboards, flyers, and stands. Print media like print advertisements incorporate social messages within their design and visual elements. This remains unquestioned. Therefore it seems relevant to explore such an approach in detail and to investigate the roots of the use of such stereotypes. There are six theories related to the women stimuli in print advertising field. These theories are: Gender self-Schema, Arousal Theory, Selective perception, Self-concept, Distraction, and Aggression theory. With the help of these theories one can closely observe the distractive points behind women depictions in print advertisements.

Book excerpt: This book contributes to our collective understanding of the significance of representations of women and gender in magazines in both their print and online forms. The essays are authored by scholars, writers and cultural producers in fields such as art, film and visual studies, literature, critical race studies, communications, broadcast and print journalism, history, and women and gender studies. Taken as a whole, the volume offers historical breadth and perspectives that are transnational and cross-racial on women in magazines and digital media in a variety of ways. It examines how women are represented, how women have created and produced magazines and how women make meaning of themselves and their world using magazines as key sources of information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author focuses on the marketing perspective of the topic and illustrates how women's roles in society have shifted during the past century. Among the key issues explored is a peculiar dichotomy of American advertising that served as a conservative reflection of society and, at the same time, became an underlying force of progressive social change. The study shows how advertisers of housekeeping products perpetuated the Happy Homemaker stereytype while tobacco and cosmetics marketers dismantled women's stereotypes to create an entirely new type of consumer.
