Book excerpt: Womens dominance in both paid and unpaid care work has contributed to the growing number of healthcare employees who simultaneously serve as family caregivers, or double-and-triple-duty caregivers. Double-and-triple-duty caregivers often struggle to engage in healthy behavior and rate their overall physical health more poorly than their non-family caregiving counterparts, or workplace-only caregivers. Although the convergence of paid and unpaid care work is expected to become more common as the demand for paid and unpaid care increases, the physical health implications of healthcare employees transitions to family caregiving roles and day-to-day experiences in such roles are not readily understood. This dissertation includes two studies that examine how healthcare employees transitions to and daily experiences in double-and-triple-duty caregiving roles relate to changes in sleep and physical health symptoms. Each dissertation study uses different sources of data from women who participated in the Work, Family and Health Study. All participants worked in U.S.-based nursing home facilities for pay, with the majority also occupying unpaid caregiving roles for children (double-duty-child caregivers), adults (double-duty-elder caregivers), or both (triple-duty caregivers), at the same time. Study 1 draws on longitudinal survey and wrist actigraphic data to assess how baseline family caregiving role quantity (i.e., number of family caregiving roles) and status (i.e., care for children, adults, or both) as well as changes in these quantities and statuses over an 18-month period are associated with subjective and objective sleep indices. Analyses also track the frequency of family caregiving role transitions over time and test whether baseline family caregiving role quantity moderates longitudinal associations between family caregiving role quantity changes and sleep characteristics. Study 2 draws on daily diary data to assess how everyday experiences of work-to-family conflict, sleep duration, and sleep quality relate to physical health symptom occurrences and severity among double-duty-child and triple-duty caregivers. Analyses also examine the moderating role of family caregiver status (i.e., double-duty-child versus triple-duty caregiver) in associations between daily experiences and physical health symptom outcomes. Findings from this dissertation suggest that double-and-triple-duty caregiving roles and daily experiences in these roles adversely affect sleep and physical health symptoms, respectively. Further, women transitioning to double-duty-elder caregiving roles are particularly at risk of poor subjective sleep characteristics and those holding a triple-duty caregiver status are at risk of poorer physical health. Future research should continue to acquire a better understanding of double-and-triple-duty caregivers sleep and physical health with the goal of informing targeted, effective workplace intervention practices. The health behavior and physical health implications of double-and-triple-duty caregiving will only become a greater concern for the long-term care industry as it seeks to hire or retain adults with an increased likelihood of occupying unpaid caregiving roles.

The gendered division of labor is widely regarded as the linchpin of gender injustice. The process of gender equalization in domestic and paid labor allocations has stalled, and a growing number of scholars argue that, absent political intervention, further eroding of the gendered division of labor will not be forthcoming anytime soon. Certain political interventions could jumpstart the stalled gender revolution, but beyond their prospects for effectiveness, such interventions stand in need of another kind of justification. In a diverse, liberal state, reasonable citizens will disagree about what makes for a good life and a good society. Because a fundamental commitment of liberalism is to limit political intrusion into the lives of citizens and allow considerable space for those citizens to act on their own conceptions of the good, questions of legitimacy arise. Legitimacy concerns the constraints we must abide by as we seek collective political solutions to our shared social problems, given that we will disagree, reasonably, both about what constitutes a problem and about what costs we should be willing to incur to fix it. The interventions in question would effectively subsidize gender egalitarian lifestyles at a cost to those who prefer to maintain a traditional gendered division of labor. In a pluralistic, liberal society where many citizens reasonably resist the feminist agenda, can we legitimately use scarce public resources to finance coercive interventions to subsidize gender egalitarianism? This book argues that they can, and moreover, that they can even by the lights of political liberalism, a particularly demanding theory of liberal legitimacy.
