Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent discussion of postmodern culture describes a movement from center to periphery, privileging cultures that were formerly marginalized. Women and Change in the Caribbean, a study of women marginalized by both gender and race in a region such as the Caribbean—itself marginalized in global terms—attempts to extract insights relevant both within and beyond geographical confines. This volume offers a feminist interpretation of a multicultural society emerging from colonialism and in the process of change and restructuring. The nineteen chapters include case studies of fifteen different Caribbean territories including Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, Puerto Rico, Grenada, and Guyana. The book is divided into two sections: the first looks at women's status and gender relations in the private and public spheres; the second looks at women's economic activity. Taking a broad pan-Caribbean comparative view contributors discuss territories with American, British, Dutch, Danish, French, and Spanish colonial traditions and current political links. The contributors come from a range of disciplinary backgrounds including agriculture, anthropology, economics, geography, history, sociology, and women's studies.

This volume, Gender in the 21st Century, commemorates the pioneering work of feminists, scholars and activists by reflecting on some of the major issues which have engaged them and influenced their scholarship and work since the early 1980s. It also addresses issues at the cutting edge of Gender and Development Studies, adopting a strong policy focus for treating current social and gender inequity. Download or read book Work and Family written by Laura Chioda and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent decades, women in Latin America and the Caribbean have increased their labor force participation faster than in any other region of the world. This evolution occurred in the context of more general progress in women’s status. Female enrollment rates have increased at all levels of education, fertility rates have declined, and social norms have shifted toward gender equality. This report sheds light on the complex relationship between stages of economic development and female economic participation. It documents a shift in women’s perceptions whereby work has become a fundamental part of their identity, highlighting the distinction between jobs and careers. These dynamics are made more complex by the acknowledgment that individuals are part of larger economic units—families. As development progresses and the options available to women expand, the need to balance career and family takes greater importance. New tensions emerge, paradoxically made possible by decades of steady gains. Understanding the new challenges women face as they balance work and family is thus crucial for policy.
Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Gender in the Twentieth-Century Caribbean by : V. Barriteau
Download or read book The Political Economy of Gender in the Twentieth-Century Caribbean written by V. Barriteau and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-05-18 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eudine Barriteau exposes the precarious position of women in twentieth century Caribbean societies through analyzing the operations of gender systems. She reveals the absence of gender justice and equity, and demonstrates that after twenty-five years of policies on women, Caribbean societies still have not confronted the fundamental problem of women's subordination and the conditions that maintain this. The strategies used by developing states to focus on women are criticised as inadequate and it is recommended that state and society pay more attention to understanding the lives of women.
Book Synopsis Cashing in on Education by : Mercedes Mateo Díaz
Download or read book Cashing in on Education written by Mercedes Mateo Díaz and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investments in education across countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have transformed the lives of millions of girls and the prospects of their families and societies. Unleashing the full economic potential of women is nevertheless still a curtailed issue in the region: just about half of women are unable to participate in paid work. The majority of the population out of the labor market is women between the ages of 24 and 45. This is the largest share of the available pool of unused human capital countries have, and where mothers of young children are concentrated. This book argues that more and better childcare constitutes a fundamental policy option to improve female outcomes in the labor market, but countries need to pay particular attention to the design and features of such services. First-rate educational programs will be useless if children are not enrolled or do not attend formal education centers. A large program expansion will be wasted if parents cannot enroll their children because they are unable to reach the center, don’t trust its quality, if the program is too expensive, or if work and care schedules are not compatible. Through an integrated framework applied to each country and an overview of the existing evidence, this book addresses the why and what questions about policy relevant instruments to achieve female labor participation. Parts I and II of the book lay out the motivation for Latin-American and Caribbean countries to act depicting their current situation both in terms of women’s labor participation and the use and provision of childcare services. Moreover, this book tackles the how question contributing to the incipient evidence about factors affecting the take-up of programs and demand for childcare services and other informal care arrangements. Part III of the book explores how to improve services and implement more and better formal, center-based care arrangements for young children. It looks at international benchmarks, discusses different experiences and proposes specific actions to solve potential inequalities in access to childcare.

Book Synopsis Rereading Women in Latin America and the Caribbean by : Jennifer Abbassi
Download or read book Rereading Women in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Jennifer Abbassi and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2002-03-26 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This indispensable text reader provides a broad-ranging and thoughtfully organized feminist introduction to the ongoing controversies of development in Latin America and the Caribbean. Designed for use in a variety of college courses, the volume collects an influential group of essays first published in Latin American Perspectives—a theoretical and scholarly journal focused on the political economy of capitalism, imperialism, and socialism in the Americas. The reader is organized into thematic sections that focus on work, politics, and culture, and each section includes substantive introductions that identify key issues, trends, and debates in the scholarly literature on women and gender in the region. Demonstrating the rich and multidisciplinary nature of Latin American studies, this collection of timely, empirical studies promotes critical thinking about women's place and power; about theory and research strategies; and about contemporary economic, political, and social conditions in Latin America and the Caribbean. Valuable as both a supplementary or primary text, Rereading Women makes a convincing claim for a materialist feminist analysis. It convincingly shows why women have become an increasingly important subject of research, acknowledges their gains and struggles over time, and explores the contributions that feminist theory has made toward the recognition of gender as a relevant—indeed essential—category for analyzing the political economy of development.
Book Synopsis Feminist Advocacy and Gender Equity in the Anglophone Caribbean by : Michelle V. Rowley
Download or read book Feminist Advocacy and Gender Equity in the Anglophone Caribbean written by Michelle V. Rowley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses the Anglophone Caribbean as its site of critique to explore two important questions within development studies. First, to what extent has the United Nations' call to implement gender-mainstreaming projects resulted in the realization of gender equity for women within developing societies? Second, does gender-mainstreaming have the conceptual, operational, and technical capacities to address the centrality of the body in 21st-century lobbies for gender equity? In answering these questions, Rowley examines such issues as reproductive rights and equity, sexual harassment, and sexual minorities' rights.
Book Synopsis Marginalized Groups in the Caribbean by : Ann Marie Bissessar
Download or read book Marginalized Groups in the Caribbean written by Ann Marie Bissessar and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the world, policy makers argue that they develop and implement policies to benefit all members of their society. Marginalized Groups in the Caribbean argues that the policies introduced by several governments in the Caribbean lead to the exclusion of groups within these societies. Using both research and interviews, the authors explore how certain groups are excluded from the policy-making process and do not have a voice. The groups highlighted in this book include criminal deportees, women, children, first peoples, refugees, and victims of floods. The three authors in this book are experts in separate disciplines: policy making, social work, as well as gender and development. They bring their respective experiences to bear in their arguments, showing many sides to the exclusionary effects of laws and promoting strategies for change.
