It is observed that 48 percent of the country's population comprises of women, and it is impossible to think about economic growth without women as a fundamental driver. This paper therefore, emphasizes the role and challenges of women entrepreneurs, particularly in urban India. Recognition, reputation, resource regeneration are some of the advantages of women entrepreneurship besides monetary gains and financial inclusion. However any drastic changes in a cultural diverse environment like India is never easy. Perception of weakness, exploitation by middlemen etc. put barriers on the mobility and risk-taking ability of entrepreneurs in general and women in particular. Our study looks at new dimensions of entrepreneurship theoretically and empirically, the impact of changes in business environment on female entrepreneurship prospects and challenges. The paper also explores alternative policies and strategies to raise women entrepreneurs from the so called secondary status.

Development of women entrepreneurship is considered a lucrative leverage to acquire a level playing field for women, in a male predominant society and economy. In a country like India where some of the women are much neglected, there are some who have soared higher. Thanks to these powerful ladies, that they have faced struggles challenges and made their way to the top list of entrepreneurs in India. This has not only helped the society economically but also has done a lot in terms of exposing the potential that a woman holds. Women as business leaders, team leaders, innovators etc are having a multiplier effect on the process of women empowerment too. Women constitute around half of the total world population. So is in India also. In modem societies, they have come out of the four walls to participate in all sorts of activities. The global evidences buttress that women have been performing exceedingly well in different spheres of activities like academics, politics, administration, social work and so on. The focus on economic development has made women the 'subjects' rather than 'objects' of development and 'change agents' rather than 'welfare recipients'. In the past rural women concentrated on traditional activities, but now due to the spread of education and favourable government policies towards self employment and skill development, women have changed their attitude and diverted towards non-traditional activities too. (e.g. engineering, IT etc). However, the dual role of women still remains a dilemma and a challenge. Here too many have succeeded in 'management' of resources including time. Entrepreneurship provides them a satisfaction and assimilates a deep sense of accomplishment to create their own individuality in the society. This paper analyses the role and contributions of women entrepreneurs in different sectors. The objectives of this paper are (i) to evaluate the present status of women entrepreneurship and its determinants; and (ii) to identify the various problems and alternative avenues/strategies in promoting integrated women entrepreneurship in India. The study is a qualitative one and is based on secondary data.

In recent years, support programmes for women entrepreneurs have gained traction and prominence as a mean to empower them, create jobs and boost productivity at the national and regional levels. In developing economies, the role of women is most significant as workers and job creators. In India, female entrepreneur's activity is concentrated in the informal sector with limited potential for growth in income and employment. In the Indian situation, female entrepreneurs are unable to grow their business from micro or small to medium or large productive enterprises with transformed economic impact. The World Bank estimation on the working-age population (15 to 59) is set to increase by more than 200 million in India in the next two decades, while it is expected to decline in most developing economies of the world including China. The era of globalisation has enhanced the role of women entrepreneurs. However, India may fail to obtain benefits without the participation of women, who form a significant mass of society. Active participation of women in economic activity and decision making is very much needed to increase GDP growth. Skill, knowledge-based education enables to change the role of women from homemaker to job maker. When a woman gets an education, a whole generation is educated. Education enhances knowledge which enables access to resources and opportunities. This paper focuses on the role of education in patterning and promoting women entrepreneurship and to examine problems, issues, challenges faced by women entrepreneurs.
