Book excerpt: Fresh from their victory in Germania, Marcus Aquila and the Tungrians have been sent to Dacia, on the north-eastern edge of the Roman Empire, with the mission to safeguard a major source of imperial power. 'A master of the genre' The Times The mines of Alburnus Major contain enough gold to pave the road to Rome. They would make a mighty prize for the marauding Sarmatae tribesmen who threaten the province, and the outnumbered auxiliaries are entrusted with their safety in the face of a barbarian invasion. Beset by both the Sarmatian horde and more subtle threats offered by men who should be their comrades, the Tungrians must also come to terms with the danger posed by a new and unexpected enemy. They will have to fight to the death to save the honour of the empire - and their own skins. 'Some authors are better historians than they are storytellers. Anthony Riches is brilliant at both.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over sixty years, Jews have ranked as the most liberal white ethnic group in American politics, figuring prominently in social reform campaigns ranging from the New Deal to the civil rights movement. Today many continue to defy stereotypes that link voting patterns to wealth. What explains this political behavior? Historians have attributed it mainly to religious beliefs, but Marc Dollinger discovered that this explanation fails to account for the entire American Jewish political experience. In this, the first synthetic treatment of Jewish liberalism and U.S. public policy from the 1930s to the mid-1970s, Dollinger identifies the drive for a more tolerant, pluralistic, and egalitarian nation with Jewish desires for inclusion in the larger non-Jewish society. The politics of acculturation, the process by which Jews championed unpopular social causes to ease their adaptation to American life, established them as the guardians of liberal America. But, according to Dollinger, it also erected barriers to Jewish liberal success. Faced with a conflict between liberal politics and their own acculturation, Jews almost always chose the latter. Few Jewish leaders, for example, condemned the wartime internment of Japanese Americans, and most southern Jews refused to join their northern co-religionists in public civil rights protests. When liberals advocated race-based affirmative action programs and busing to desegregate public schools, most Jews dissented. In chronicling the successes, limits, and failures of Jewish liberalism, Dollinger offers a nuanced yet wide-ranging political history, one intended for liberal activists, conservatives curious about the creation of neo-conservatism, and anyone interested in Jewish communal life.

From the History and Development of the Modern Black Rifle (an award winning, in-depth article) to accessories and configurations the reader may have never even heard about, this book includes numerous, previously published articles focused solely on the black rifle and includes a few of the author's picks for new upgrades and systems to watch in the future. With a Foreword by legendary musician, outspoken outdoorsman, and 2nd Amendment advocate, Ted Nugent, and a Preface by a former Navy Seal of the elite Team 6 and member of the top secret team REDCELL, never before has such a compilation of articles on a single weapon system been published. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last in a series of three volumes edited by Marc Lee Raphael surveying some of the major rabbinic and lay personalities who have shaped Judaism in America for the past two centuries, this work focuses on Orthodox Judaism. Along with a basic description of the achievements of some of the most notable leaders, a bibliography of their writings and sources for further study is included as well as an essay on Orthodox rabbinic organizations and a survey of American Orthodox periodicals. Of interest to scholars, students, and lay persons alike, this volume will inform readers about the earliest communities of Jews who settled in America as they developed the institutions of Orthodox Jewish life and set a public standard of compliance with Jewish law. These early American Jews followed a Spanish-Dutch version of Sephardic customs and rites. Their synagogues used traditional prayer books, promoted the celebration of Jewish holidays, established mikvahs, acquired Passover provisions, and arranged for cemetery land and burial services. While many of these Sephardic immigrants did not maintain halakha in their daily regimen as did their European counterparts, they set a public standard of compliance with Jewish law, thus honoring Jewish tradition. Further immigration of thousands of Jews from Western and Central Europe in the middle of the 19th century brought a world of traditional piety and extensive Jewish learning to America, exemplified by Rabbi Abraham Rice, who served in Baltimore, and Yissachar Dov (Bernard) Illowy, who served communities from Philadelphia to New Orleans. Such men marked the beginning of a learned and scholarly rabbinate in America. This volume provides valuable biographical insights regarding some of the most notable religious leaders in American Orthodoxy.

Countless centuries of its malign influence are spanned by the stories in this book. From seventeenth-century buccaneers to twenty-first century soldiers, from Victorian slums to quiet suburban streets, the play and the monarch it tells of have brought ruination and salvation. Inspired by the weird, atmospheric horror of nineteenth century author Robert W. Chambers – Come and meet the original King in Yellow.

Book excerpt: This is the fascinating and complex story of the Chinese-Canadian community in New Westminster, British Columbia, told in text and photographs that relate a range of individual experiences and stories. Yi Fao is the city's Chinese name; it means 'second port, ' a reference to New West's place as the second port of entry to British Columbia after Victoria. The book documents the history of Yi Fao and preserves and celebrates the voices and personalities of the Chinese immigrants who contributed so much to the city's development, focusing on four key families of settlers: Law, Lee, Quan and Shiu. In each family's story, children, siblings, grandchildren, grandparents and in-laws recount their memories of life in New Westminster. While the historical narrative helps place the stories in a broader context, the personal reminiscences offer a history not just of facts and dates, but of personal experiences and emotions. This intimate glimpse into daily life and the city's old Chinatown is compelling and poignant, revealing a story of struggle, adventure and achievement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daddy, please! Please don’t do this!” I begged with my hands. “It’s done, Tegan. The contract is signed. You will leave tonight to be the Alpha King’s contracted mate. You will bear him an heir within three months, or you will regret it!” He roared out, his face showing me just how angry he truly was. I silently wept at the cards fate played me. I will be nothing more than a baby-making machine for the cruelest Alpha known, Ezra Hendricks. Tegan Declan is a shy she-wolf who was born deaf. She is starting a new life as a disabled wolf in a new pack. She is the new contracted mate to the Alpha King, Ezra Hendricks. “Being deaf was a quality I would hate my son to have. As a wolf, you need all your senses to be able to lead, protect, and stay alive. Lacking hearing would not benefit anyone; it could lead to mass destruction and the loss of many lives. It would not be a good quality for a king. This brought me back to my question. What makes her think she is fit to be my Queen? I want to know what she thinks her strengths are. Would they outweigh her weaknesses?” This is book 1 of the trilogy series.
