Book excerpt: This collection discusses and illustrates how educational research is affected by the economic, institutional and physical contingencies of its time, and in our time even increasingly is driven by them. It is argued that the antidote to this is, however, not to aspire to ‘thought itself’, but instead to do justice to its own rootedness in the ‘material’, including textuality. From an historical point of view such an innovative approach can itself revamp the material scholarly culture and the way it is represented. The chapters address a variety of topics such as the cultural heritage of the school desk, the significance of images for research into long-term educational processes, the way iconic signs function, and how modes of enquiry relate to the materiality of education. Attention is also given to standards for reporting on educational research studies and how these limit the scope and communication and moreover shape researchers, to the forms of citation practices as substantially influencing methods and content, and to the centrality of conversation not just as the means to an end but as what matters; further to representational and to non-representational theories for educational research. Some examples are drawn from the area of arts-based educational research, from mathematics education, and from the discourse on universities.

Book excerpt: The SALRM 2011 provides a rich source of information on a range of language-related subjects. A prominent issue remains the changing of street and place names, including the Pretoria/Tshwane and Louis Trichardt/Makhado sagas. Language in education remains a thorny issue; as medium of instruction at school and tertiary level, and the proposal that passing an African language should be a requirement in order to obtain a tertiary degree in South Africa. In terms of language legislation, the draft version of the National Language Act was proposed. The language of record in courts also received attention in the media.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This textbook provides real world examples of how disciplinary literacy can incorporate gamified learning opportunities in elementary classrooms (grades K-5 or ages 5-11). It also presents concrete examples of how to seamlessly integrate literacy within other subjects in engaging and unique ways. Furthermore, this text offers practical information related to pedagogy, content, and differentiation for each lesson. Preservice teachers, practicing teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators can benefit from this user-friendly text and its companion digital components, allowing for replication of lessons based on national standards, backed by best-practices, and supported by differentiated pedagogy. This unique volume begins with engineering marvels that span across centuries and locations. The eight chapters focus on the following marvels in chronological order: Great Pyramid of Giza, Stonehenge, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu, Panama Canal, Golden Gate Bridge, and International Space Station. By focusing on these specific examples of human ingenuity, opportunities are created to delve into the historical and social aspects of each chapter’s focus. There are also occasions to explore the artistic merit and the art created about and around each focus. Additional teaching opportunities lie in understanding the science, engineering, technology, and math embedded in all featured marvels. Each chapter features an adventure roadmap in the form of a narrative quest set against the chapter’s marvel that guides teachers and student players through embedded activities. Activities are designed for lower elementary school (grades K-2 or ages 5-8) and upper elementary school (grades 3-5 or ages 8-11). Instructional support for both novice and career teachers is provided through differentiation strategies, resource materials, and teaching tips.

Book excerpt: What students learn about the science disciplines, technology, engineering, and mathematics during their K-12 schooling shapes their intellectual development, opportunities for future study and work, and choices of career, as well as their capacity to make informed decisions about political and civic issues and about their own lives. Most people share the vision that a highly capable STEM workforce and a population that understands and supports the scientific enterprise are key to the future place of the United States in global economics and politics and to the well-being of the nation. Indeed, the solutions to some of the most daunting problems facing the nation will require not only the expertise of top STEM professionals but also the wisdom and understanding of its citizens. Although much is known about why schools may not succeed, it is far less clear what makes STEM education effective. Successful STEM Education: A Workshop Summary discusses the importance of STEM education. The report describes the primary types of K-12 schools and programs that can support successful education in the STEM disciplines and examines data and research that demonstrate the effectiveness of these school types. It also summarizes research that helps to identify both the elements that make such programs effective and what is needed to implement these elements.
