Yet twenty-four years later, after having eight more talented children, Colleen and Mike were told that their sixteen-year-old son had terminal cancer. Your insight into life and death, and your terrible experiences from which you have learned patience and understanding, will help us all to become better people. Paula Bjornn, Registered Nurse It was dusk as my husband and I entered the small cemetery to place flowers on the three gravesJonathan, our firstborn son who died at eight months from a rare pneumonia; Michael, our violinist son who left us at age sixteen due to pancreatic cancer; and Seth, a loving son who trained hawks and suffered blindness and neurodegeneration after thirty years of immunodeficiency. As the sun set with crimson colors, I placed bright summer flowers on each grave. Help me to do what I should do with my life, I said to my sons. It was clear what my path should be. I could not let their lives be lost in vain! I should write their stories of struggle, love, and faith. They are doing their work now in heavenly spheres, and I must do mine while I still have time! I said to myself. It all seemed so clear. This powerful memoir describing Colleen Openshaws frequent encounters with illness and death will convey important insights when we experience these unwanted sorrows in our own lives. Losing her parents to cancer and old age, a sister in a car accident, her husband to organ failure and Alzheimers, as well as her three precious sons to hyper-IgM syndromehas given Colleen unusual understanding in facing end-of-life issues. Relying on her faith in God as well as her own grit and determination, her experiences can give us a unique comprehension of how to confront these inevitable trials common to all mankind.

Book Synopsis The Wild and the Wicked by : Benjamin Hale
Download or read book The Wild and the Wicked written by Benjamin Hale and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief foray into a moral thicket, exploring why we should protect nature despite tsunamis, malaria, bird flu, cancer, killer asteroids, and tofu. Most of us think that in order to be environmentalists, we have to love nature. Essentially, we should be tree huggers—embracing majestic redwoods, mighty oaks, graceful birches, etc. We ought to eat granola, drive hybrids, cook tofu, and write our appointments in Sierra Club calendars. Nature's splendor, in other words, justifies our protection of it. But, asks Benjamin Hale in this provocative book, what about tsunamis, earthquakes, cancer, bird flu, killer asteroids? They are nature, too. For years, environmentalists have insisted that nature is fundamentally good. In The Wild and the Wicked, Benjamin Hale adopts the opposite position—that much of the time nature can be bad—in order to show that even if nature is cruel, we still need to be environmentally conscientious. Hale argues that environmentalists needn't feel compelled to defend the value of nature, or even to adopt the attitudes of tree-hugging nature lovers. We can acknowledge nature's indifference and periodic hostility. Deftly weaving anecdote and philosophy, he shows that we don't need to love nature to be green. What really ought to be driving our environmentalism is our humanity, not nature's value. Hale argues that our unique burden as human beings is that we can act for reasons, good or bad. He claims that we should be environmentalists because environmentalism is right, because we humans have the capacity to be better than nature. As humans, we fail to live up to our moral potential if we act as brutally as nature. Hale argues that despite nature's indifference to the plight of humanity, humanity cannot be indifferent to the plight of nature.

Book Synopsis The Cases That Haunt Us by : Mark Olshaker
Download or read book The Cases That Haunt Us written by Mark Olshaker and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2001-01-23 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Lizzie Borden murder her own father and stepmother? Was Jack the Ripper actually the Duke of Clarence? Who killed JonBenet Ramsey? #1 New York Times bestselling author and legendary FBI criminal profiler John Douglas, along with author and filmmaker Mark Olshaker—the team behind the famous Mindhunter series—explore those tantalizing questions and more in this mesmerizing work of detection. Violent. Provocative. Shocking. Call them what you will…but don't call them open and shut. In The Cases That Haunt Us, Douglas and Olshaker explore the mysteries that both their legions of fans and law enforcement professionals ask about most. With uniquely gripping analysis, the authors reexamine and reinterpret the accepted facts, evidence, and victimology of the most notorious murder cases in the history of crime, including the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, The Zodiac Killer, and the Whitechapel murders. The cases touch a nerve deep within us because of the personalities involved, their senseless depravity, the nagging doubts about whether justice was done, or because, in some instances, no suspect has ever been identified or caught. Taking a fresh and penetrating look at each case, the authors reexamine and reinterpret accepted facts and victimology using modern profiling and the techniques of criminal analysis developed by Douglas within the FBI. The Cases That Haunt Us not only offers convincing and controversial conclusions, it deconstructs the evidence and widely held beliefs surrounding each case and rebuilds them—with fascinating, surprising, and haunting results.

Sally CJ, whose thirty-four double Ds are not shrinking with age, believes sex is the magic elixir for all evils. Frances, who just ended a dead-end relationship, is approaching aging through wine and expensive face creams. Marcia, a widow who has the ability to attract guys with major character flaws, is unintentionally transforming into a nun. As the women search for their next relationship, they reflect on youthful escapades and eventually create rules to guide them through the unfamiliar territory of Internet and blind dating. Book excerpt: The Halloween Children are watching—they’re always watching in this chilling novel of suburban horror from Bram Stoker Award winner Norman Prentiss and Brian James Freeman of Cemetery Dance Publications. The accommodations at Stillbrook Apartments aren’t exactly glamorous, but they’re quiet, affordable, and well maintained. The handyman is usually available to help with a leak or a broken bulb, his wife and two adorable kids often tagging along. When occasion dictates, the neighbors gather to wish each other well and spread the requisite holiday cheer. Everything’s very nice. Very normal. But as Halloween approaches, strange occurrences are happening all around Stillbrook. The children tell disturbing stories, bizarre noises bleed through the walls, and one abandoned unit is found to be inhabited by something sinister—something that’s no longer alive. For the safety of the tenants, the Halloween party has been canceled. There will be no decorations or masks, no candied apples or witch’s brew. But without treats to divert the Halloween Children, they have no choice but to play some very nasty tricks. Book Synopsis Literary Gems by : Lydia Bongcaron Wade
Download or read book Literary Gems written by Lydia Bongcaron Wade and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the contents of this book are jokes, short stories, essays, dialogues, and poetry. They are original literary pieces, written and compiled by the author over the years. The quotations, sayings and words of wisdom that appear in the latter part of the book are works of renowned authors, poets, and philosophers of all time. Their writings are timeless, and the writers, universally acclaimed. They had been gathered and kept by the author since she was in her teens. She had since considered these writings her treasures or gems. These works of great literary geniuses who were prominent and outstanding in their era, had impressed and left imprints on the author so much that she aspired to become a writer one day. The ambition was finally realized decades later. On the whole, the book contains a variety of fiction and non-fiction literary pieces, intended to offer the reader variations in type, style, content and organization that a novel or piece of literature with a single plot is not able to provide. The continuous flow of the same idea or plot in a novel can sometimes bore the reader. Variety is the spice of life, so it was said. Variety in the taste, flavor and appearance of food can enhance the appetite of even the most picky eater. In a similar vein, variety as those offered in this collection offers changes in mood, line of thoughts and feelings of the reader and cuts or minimizes monotony. So I hope! May the reader find this collection funny and enjoyable, informative, and nourishing food for the mind and the soul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to The Love Season--a riveting story that takes place in one day and spans decades; a story that embraces the charming, pristine island of Nantucket, as well as Manhattan, Paris and Morocco. Elin Hilderbrand's most ambitious novel to date chronicles the famous couplings of real lives: love and friendship, food and wine, deception and betrayal--and forgiveness and healing. It's a hot August Saturday on Nantucket Island. Over the course of the next 24 hours, two lives will be transformed forever. Marguerite Beale, former chef of culinary hot spot Les Parapluies, has been out of the public eye for over a decade. This all changes with a phone call from Marguerite's goddaughter, Renata Knox. Marguerite has not seen Renata since the death of Renata's mother, Candace Harris Knox, fourteen years earlier. And now that Renata is on Nantucket visiting the family of her new fiancé, she takes the opportunity, against her father's wishes, to contact Marguerite in hopes of learning the story of her mother's life--and death. But the events of the day spiral hopelessly out of control for both women, and nothing ends up as planned.
