Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winona, located on an island where the upper Mississippi River flows from west to east, has been linked to the river from its earliest days. Before the community's settlement, Native Americans and white explorers sailed past Wapasha's Prairie in birchbark canoes, keel boats, and small sailboats. As early as the 1820s, steamboats plied the river while carrying people and goods to and from the state's interior. Before bridges began to crisscross the river, merchants had to use boats to bring people and supplies to Winona before they could travel farther west. The first bridge to cross the river was a swing bridge that allowed steamboats to pass. Images of America: Upper Mississippi River at Winona uses images collected and archived in the Winona County Historical Society's History Center to illustrate the history of the Mississippi River near Winona. Many of the photographs exhibited in this book have rarely been seen by the general public and have never been published.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey Up the Mississippi River: From Its Mouth to Nauvoo, the City of the Latter Day Saints I have been induced to write the following pages at the solicitations of many friends. But the most particular reason why I have thus ventured to allow myself to be criticised, and, perhaps, wrong constructions put upon my ideas, is that my country, men and women, who have embraced the new doctrine of Mormonism should know the real condition of their friends in the city of Nauvoo. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging and well-illustrated primer to the Upper Mississippi River presents the basic natural and human history of this magnificent waterway. Immortal River is written for the educated lay-person who would like to know more about the river's history and the forces that shape as well as threaten it today. It melds complex information from the fields of geology, ecology, geography, anthropology, and history into a readable, chronological story that spans some 500 million years of the earth's history. Like the Mississippi itself, Immortal River often leaves the main channel to explore the river's backwaters, floodplain, and drainage basin. The book's focus is the Upper Mississippi, from Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Cairo, Illinois. But it also includes information about the river's headwaters in northern Minnesota and about the Lower Mississippi from Cairo south to the river's mouth ninety miles below New Orleans. It offers an understanding of the basic geology underlying the river's landscapes, ecology, environmental problems, and grandeur.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Northwest: Or Valley of the Upper Mississippi This country (west of Lake Michigan) was almost un known to geographers twenty years ago. The report of Rev. J. Morse to the Secretary of War, in 1821, states that in 1819 there were but three families settled from the mouth of the Illinois up two hundred and forty miles, and Darby, in his Gazetteer (2d edit., says, of this immense re gion (included between Lakes Michigan and Superior, Rivers Missisippi and Red, the State of Missouri and the northern boundary of the United States) much remains unknown, and of those parts that have been explored, our information is generally imperfect. [verb Michigan.] Galena was settled in 1828; and in 1833, after the Black Hawk war, settlements began on Rock River and the northern parts of Illinois and in Iowa, upon the tract purchased of the Sacs and Foxes. In the list of rivers flowing into the Upper Mis sisippi, in the same work, are several defects and errors. On the right side, Root and Wabsipinicon and Checagua (or Skunk) are omitted; and that now known to the inhabitants of Iowa as Tete des Morts, is called Galena. On the left, some considerable streams are not named. The falls of St. Anthony are placed, in the same authority, in latitude which is one degree south of their true situation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Mississippi Valley: From Its Discovery to the End of Foreign Domination But the story of Gnadenhutten, written in blood that will not out, proves beyond doubt or question that the tepees and hats of every red village in the land might have been turned into Tents of Grace. It is a frightful fact that for every red man slain by by the whites, in the frontier wars, at least three whites were slain by the red. That fact is sufficient to damn the white policy, but it is not all; for because of the policy that was pursued by those who despised Qua ker sentiment, we are even now paying more than ten million dollars a year for the expenses Of the Indian Bureau. Yet the fact remains that the cost of convert ing the Delaware Indians of Gnadenhutten from the red savages, which they had been, to the stump-grub bing farmers, which they became, was less than the waste of any one of hundreds of Indian raids.
