Frank Shorter winning gold in the 1972 Olympic marathon inspired local barkeep Tommy Leonard to start a race in his own town. That inaugural race in 1973 garnered fewer than one hundred runners. Participation soon swelled to the thousands, thanks to the success of organizers, volunteers, and talented fields, including running legends like Bill Rodgers and Catherine Ndereba, as well as wheelchair champions Bob Hall and Tatyana McFadden. Follow author Paul C. Clerici along every bend and uphill battle of the race's history from the early stages of the running boom to resetting the road-racing calendar.

Book excerpt: James Chalmers, a less-than-honorable attorney who has lost everything due to his drinking, womanizing, and gambling, is dying of cancer. He stoically accepts his fate until a mysterious woman from his past shows up to offer him the ultimate gift—immortality. But there is only one problem: the gift comes with a catch. In order to keep his cancer at bay and get a second chance to be a good person, Chalmers must be willing to take the life of another and seek justice for those who cannot find it for themselves. Haunted by the thoughts of having to murder in order to stay alive, Chalmers struggles to understand how his gift is anything more than a curse. Chalmers is befriended by fellow Justice Seeker, Carlos. Together they head to Mexico with the hope of a better life. There, they’ll have the chance to learn to accept their fates. If they can’t do so, they can pass their gifts on to another—with death as the consequence. In this novel, a tortured soul embarks on a remarkable path of self-discovery as he contemplates how far he will travel to preserve his life and whether the cost is really worth it.

Book excerpt: This book contains the early history of Warren Township High School, from its beginnings as Gurnees two-year high school. The two-year high school evolved first into a three-year high school and finally into a four-year township high school in 1917. It contains an early history of Warren sports teams, experiences of its students, and descriptions of life at Warren. If you are wondering why I named the book the Revised Early History of instead of just the Early History of, Ill explain. Originally, I only intended to write a history of Warrens football teams. While researching football, I occasionally ran across articles about the early years at Warren. I saved what I found and filed it away. Next, the Warren Township Historical Society asked me to write an account of Warren football for their newsletter. While writing about the football team, I decided to add all the other information about Warren I had found earlier and then called it the Early History of Warren Township High School. Six months after writing the article, I noticed a couple of mistakes that needed correction and decided to do a more in-depth study of the high schools history. I ended up with enough Warren history that I was able to write this book and correct my mistakes.

Book excerpt: Named a "Favorite Book of 2022" by the Washington Independent Review of Books The Winning Ticket is an inside look at one of the most complicated yet seat-of-your-pants financial investigations and prosecutions in recent history. Rob Sand, the youngest attorney in his office, was assigned a new case by his boss, who was days away from retirement. Inside the thin accordion binder Sand received was meager evidence that had been gathered over the course of two years by Iowa authorities regarding a suspicious lottery ticket. No one expected the case to go anywhere. No dead body, no shots fired, and no money paid out. Why should they care? There was no certainty that a crime had even been committed. But a mysterious Belizean trust had attempted to claim the $16 million ticket, then decided to forgo the money and maintain anonymity when the State of Iowa demanded to know who had purchased the ticket. Who values anonymity over that much money? Both a story of small-town America and a true-crime saga about the largest lottery-rigging scheme in American history, The Winning Ticket follows the investigation all the way down the rabbit hole to uncover how Eddie Tipton was able to cheat the system to win jackpots over $16 million and go more than a decade without being caught--until Sand inherited the case. Just as remarkable as the crime are the real-life characters met along the way: an honest fireworks salesman, a hoodwinked FBI agent, a crooked Texas lawman, a shady attorney representing a Belizean trust, and, yes, Bigfoot hunters. While some of the characters are nearly unbelievable, the everyday themes of integrity and hard work resonate throughout the saga. As the case builds toward a reckoning, The Winning Ticket demonstrates how a new day has dawned in prosecuting complex technological crimes.

But in this anthology of ten short stories, J. L. Larson shows a different side of the state via unique tales of conflict, adventure, and intrigue that often transport characters outside it borders. In July of 1970, at a benign looking intersection in the middle of Minnesota farmland, a fateful mishap occurs yet again! What is it about this seemingly nondescript junction that makes it such a repetitive and bloody deathtrap? Is it the terrain, the weather, the drivers—or a combination of these and maybe a few other factors? In another story, a paper company executive and his wife must cope with an empty nest and the loss of his job. He's doing fine ... until he receives a strange, late-night call about his self-centered, malicious nemesis from the old job. In tale after tale, Larson showcases eclectic characters who embark on adventures that include a disaster on a popular lake, an emotional confrontation in a university classroom, the mysterious travel exploits experienced by a young man with his uncle, and the recurring, dramatic impact on a young teen as his life moves forward following a seemingly insignificant encounter. The Accident at Sanborn Corners and Other Minnesota Short Stories is an entertaining compilation of situations and themes that illustrate how various characters cope with the unexpected in life.
