Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nerves of Steel is the captivating true story of Tammie Jo Shults’s remarkable life—from growing up the daughter of a humble rancher, to breaking through gender barriers as one of the Navy’s first female F/A-18 Hornet pilots, to safely landing the severely crippled Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 and helping save the lives of 148 people. Tammie Jo Shults has spent her entire life loving the skies. Though the odds were against her, she became one of the few female fighter pilots in the Navy. In 1994, after serving her country honorably for eight years, Tammie Jo left the Navy and joined Southwest Airlines in the early 1990’s. On April 17, 2018, Tammie Jo was called to service once again. Twenty minutes into a routine domestic flight, Captain Shults was faced with the unthinkable—a catastrophic engine failure in the Boeing 737 caused an explosion that severed hydraulic and fuel lines, tearing away sections of the plane, puncturing a window, and taking a woman’s life. Captain Shults and her first officer, Darren Ellisor, struggled to stabilize the aircraft. Drawing deeply from her well of experience, Tammie Jo was able to wrestle the severely damaged 737 safely to the ground. Not originally scheduled for that flight, there is no doubt God had prepared her and placed her right where she needed to be that day.

Book excerpt: From small-town America to a world on the cusp of World War II, Wings is an uplifting story about one woman’s fight to fulfil her dreams. From her family’s dusty farmland airstrip near Chicago, Cassie O’Malley would look at the planes shimmering in the moonlight and feel the pull of taking to the skies. Her First World War veteran father Pat wanted his son to be a pilot, not his reckless red-haired daughter. But her father’s partner Nick, fellow air ace, was willing to break all the rules and teach her to fly. When Cassie is invited to California to become a test pilot, her record-breaking flights make her a media darling. Risking her life, in a world preparing for the Second World War, she decides to chart her own course and pursue her own destiny, whatever it might cost her . . .

Book Synopsis Wings of the Rising Sun by : Mark Chambers
Download or read book Wings of the Rising Sun written by Mark Chambers and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Pacific War's early years, Japanese air power was dominant. The only way for the Allies to defeat their enemy was to know it. This made the task of maintaining productive intelligence gathering efforts on Japan imperative. Establishing Technical Air Intelligence Units in the Pacific Theatre and the Technical Air Intelligence Center in Washington DC, the Allies were able to begin to reveal the secrets of Japanese air power through extensive flight testing and evaluation of captured enemy aircraft and equipment. These provided an illuminating perspective on Japanese aircraft and aerial weapon design philosophy and manufacturing practice. Fully illustrated throughout with a wealth of previously unpublished photographs, Mark Chambers explores Allied efforts to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of Japanese air power during the war years, and how this intelligence helped them achieve victory in the Pacific.

Download or read book Wings with Nozzle-shaped Slots written by Richard Katzmayr and published by . This book was released on 1929 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even before the publication of the results of the Gottingen experiments on the removal of the boundary layer by suction, experiments with nozzle-slotted wings were begun. A report of those experiments will be given here. Taken collectively, the experiments show that, as regards increasing the lift values, the effect of the air flowing from the nozzle-shaped slots is similar to the effect produced in the case of ordinary slotted wings. The high lift values are attained, however, at the smaller angles of attack employed in ordinary flight.
