Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wine Question: In the Light of the New Dispensation It is doubtless known to most New Church readers that the writer has published a tract on "Pure Wine - Fermented Wine, and other Alcoholic Drinks." This tract is still in print, and will be sent with pleasure to any reader of the Writings of Emanuel Swedenborg who has not seen it. The author has sent a copy of it to all whose names he has been able to obtain, and will continue to send it to such additional names as are forwarded to him, feeling that in no other way can he do as much service for the cause of the New Church with his time and money, as in spreading a knowledge of the truth on this subject among the members of the Church, the receivers of its doctrines, and the readers of Swedenborg's works. A letter addressed to Dr. John Ellis, New York City, will be quite sure to reach him. He also desires that a copy of the present work should be found in the library of every New Church family in the land. He would rather not receive the names of those who are not readers, for the world outside of the recognized New Church is too wide for his limited means. It has been suggested that the tract on "Pure Wine," etc., would be a good tract to send to the clergymen of the various denominations to invite their attention, not only to the cause of Temperance, but also to that of the New Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oinos: A Discussion of the Bible Wine Question One of the battles yet raging is whether the wine-bibber and manufacturer can hide themselves behind the example of Christ, the Saviour of the world. As an aid to victory in this fight, this new piece of ordnance has been brought forward. It is of large caliber, well ri ed, carefully loaded, and not liable to recoil. I wish it might be every-where trained on the enemy, and made to open fire. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reply to "the Academy's" Review of "the Wine Question in the Light of the New Dispensation" As a prelude to this reply, the writer desires to state that in his use of the term Old Church (which The Academy in its review has so frequently applied to the views of the writer and the advocates of total abstinence so unjustly and unfairly, and which he has felt it proper to return to The Academy justly and fairly, as the reader will see), he intends no disrespect to the prevailing religious denominations in the midst of which we dwell but the term Old Church, as he applies it in the following pages, refers simply tothe fallen Church, which was consummated at the last judgment in 175 7, and to the doctrines of that Church, as they linger in the religious world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shall We Drink Wine?: A Physician's Study of the Alcohol Question As to the importance of the alcohol question, there can be only one opinion. How long can we continue to increase the per capita consumption of alcohol at the rate of seventy per cent. Every twenty years before it becomes evident to the slowest of comprehension that something must be done to save civilized races from annihilation? The writer believes, too, that it is the province of the physician more than the moralist, more than the philanthropist, and certainly as much as the statesman, to do what he may for the suppression of alcohol. This essay is, therefore, written certainly as much for the physician as for the intelligent layman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laws of Fermentation: And the Wines of the Ancients The proofs are stated on the authorities to which they are credited, and who are to be held responsible for their accuracy. Many, however, of these authorities I have verified by my personal examination, and to these I have added new ones. The use made of the facts, as well as the reasonings connected with them, is obviously my own. For the exposition of many passages of Scripture I must be held responsible. My simple aim is to present this important subject in a manner so plain that all readers of the Bible may understand what are my convictions of its teachings on the subject of temperance, and particularly of the wine question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lay Thesis on Bible Wines IN certain circles the question may be asked, Why should a maker of wines stray within the realms of theology? More perti'nently the ques tion could be reversed, but the answer would be speculative while the reply to the original question would be practical knowledge. So much has been written upon the wines of the Bible in a theologi cal sense, and so little in a practical way that I feel I will be pardoned for my invasion. There are elements in the use of wine that are not fun damental. A foundation seldom accurately pre dicts the structure that is to be raised upon its walls, and the lapse of nearly two thousand years before the two-wine theory is advanced shows con clusively the kind and nature of the building that may be erected if the foundation still exists. What I say in the succeeding pages is only the expression of thoughts I have gathered through experience, the result of what I, in childhood, was taught to believe, that the Bible told us what was evil and also told us how to avoid it. Right is right, and wrong is wrong; right cannot be wrong. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History and Description of Modern Wines The separation of all knowledge which is of a useful character from abstruse terms or pedantic conjectures, seems demanded by the present call for works which convey as much as possible of fact. Man is become a more active animal than he ever was before. While the mass of human life appears to have received a prolonged duration, it seems given only to stimulate activity, and leaves the impress upon the mind, owing to its redoubled occupation, that years fleet with more than their former rapidity. The wines of the moderns are, there is no doubt, much more perfect than those of the ancients, as far as can be discovered by any thing authentic, which has reached the present time.
