Download or read book Wind-Tunnel Tests of Eight-Blade Single - and Dual - Rotating Propellers in the Traction Position written by and published by . This book was released on 1941 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests of 10-ft. diameter, eight-blade, single - and dual - rotating propellers were conducted in 20-ft propeller research tunnel. Propellers were mounted at front end of a streamline body in spinners that covered hubs and parts of shanks. Effect of a symmetrical wing mounted in slipstream was investigated. Blade-angle settings ranged from 20 Degrees to 65 Degrees. Results indicated that dual rotation resulted in gains of from 1 to 8% in efficiency over single rotation for eight-blade propellers, but presence of a wing reduced gain about one-half. Greater power absorption caused by dual rotation over flight range and higher efficiency or thrust for range of take-off and climb was indicated.

Gray and published by . This book was released on 1944 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: The advent of dual-rotating propellers has created a need for information concerning the effect of the number of blades of the front and rear propellers, relative rotational speeds, and small changes in the blade angles of the rear propeller. Results of aerodynamic tests of seven-blade propellers, which were considered as a possible arrangement to avoid vibration difficulties, are presented herein. Variations of relative blade angle and rotational speeds of the front and rear components of a six-blade dual-rotating propeller were also investigated. The test program was an extension of previous work on dual-rotating propellers at the NACA propeller-research tunnel; the propeller blades and test body were those used in the previous tests. The results indicated that envelope efficiencies of a seven-blade propeller with three blades in the front hub and four in the rear were form 0 to 1 1/2 percent lower than envelope efficiencies for the six-blade dual-rotating propeller; four blades in the front hub and three in the rear resulted in efficiencies 1/2 to 3 1/2 percent lower than those obtained with the six-blade propeller. This conclusion applies to blade-angle settings of the front and rear propellers to absorb equal power at peak efficiency when the rotational speeds were held equal.

This book was released on 1945 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: The effect on the propulsive efficiency of locking or windmilling one propeller of a six-blade dual-rotating-propeller installation was determined in the Langley propeller-research tunnel. Tests were made of both pusher and tractor configurations, with the unpowered propeller both leading and following the powered propeller, which was set at a blade angle of 40°. The maximum propulsive efficiency of the powered propeller in combination with the locked or windmilling propeller was, in all cases, lower than that of the powered propeller operating alone. The locked propeller gave greater maximum propulsive efficiencies when used as a contravane to remove rotational energy from the slipstream than when used as a means for imparting initial twist to the air. The windmilling propeller, however, was equally efficient both leading and following the driven propeller. In the tractor installation, smallest losses in maximum propulsive efficiency were obtained when the unpowered following propeller was locked at a blade angle of 90° and when the unpowered leading propeller was allowed to windmill at a blade angle of 45°. In the pusher installation, equal losses in maximum propulsive efficiency were obtained when the unpowered following propeller was either locked at 90° or windmilling at 55°, but the unpowered leading propeller gave smallest losses when windmilling at 55°.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibration tests of six- and eight-blade tractor and seven- and eight-blade pusher dual-rotating propellers were conducted in the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory 16-foot high-speed tunnel chiefly to determine the severity of vibrations excited by blade passages. A pusher design with a wing located ahead of the propellers and displaced 50 percent of the propeller radius below thrust-axis was simulated. Measurements of vibratory stresses of the propellers were made for engine-speed ranges at low, intermediate, and high engine powers.

Book excerpt: Tests were conducted to determine the characteristics at low blade angles of propellers for which data at high blade angles are already available. In addition to the low blade-angle results, there are included data on two- and three-bladed propellers of the same blade design which have not been published and which cover a range of blade angles from 20 to 65 deg.
