Book excerpt: Oliver Fischer analyzes the interference effects occurring in free-stream wind tunnels as well as their correction and simulation. With this work, the investigated correction method and the comparability of its results as well as flow simulation results are improved. The model wind tunnel of the IVK, University of Stuttgart, is simulated in various wind tunnel configurations. The application of a correction procedure to the corresponding experimental data from the model wind tunnel of the IVK is examined. These correction results are directly comparable with interference-free simulation results and thus allow a conclusion on the functionality of the correction method. Based on these findings, this thesis proposes a modification of the correction method that improves the comparability of corrected experimental results and CFD simulations in idealized test conditions. About the Author Oliver Fischer works as an engineer in aerodynamics development for a renowned German automobile manufacturer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1997 and 1999, a Working Group on the feasibility of collaborative, multi-facility windtunnel testing for the validation of Computational Fluid Dynamics Codes (CFD) has established the following results: Wintunnel tests are the main source of CFD validation but all have specific bias errors. Testing of the same model in several facilities can better establish the level of uncertainty in windtunnel tests and hence help assess possible differences between CFD and windtunnel tests. The Working Group, after an initial inquiry, established the need for CFD validation for fighter aircraft, transport type aircraft, missiles and helicopters. Effort and cost can be controlled efficiently and would permit the improvement of CFD Codes for considerable cost saving in future developments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Half model testing is considered a valuable wind tunnel technique that offers many benefits over conventional full span testing. The technique suffers from aerodynamic losses due to flow separations on the model surfaces near the model/floor junction. Computational Fluid Dynamics, employing the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model, and experimental investigations were carried out to evaluate the losses and to investigate the effect of localised suction on the junction flows. The wind tunnel model used was a rectangular and untwisted wing having a NASA LS(1)-0413 cross section and with a physical aspect ratio of 3. Tests were conducted at 10.00 incidence at a Reynolds number of 0.44 x 106. Aerodynamic performance of the wind tunnel half model was obtained by surface flow visualisation and pressure measurements on the wing surface in the junction region. CFD predictions showed significantly large losses compared to the experimental findings and therefore CFD predicted significant influence and benefits of suction. These were seen as elimination of the model surface separation and also recovery of the wing surface pressure distributions. In contrast to this, experiments showed much smaller separation than CFD without suction and applying suction in experiments, showed only a marginal effect on the flow separations, which also further deteriorated the pressure distributions. Future CFD studies on junction flows should be conducted using more advanced turbulence models such as Large Eddy Simulations (LES). In addition, to validate these CFD studies, velocity and turbulence measurements in the wing/floor junction region are also needed.

Book excerpt: Aerodynamic analysis using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is most fruitful when it is combined with a thorough program of wind tunnel testing. The understanding of aerodynamic phenomena is enhanced by the synergistic use of both analysis methods. A technique is described for an integrated approach to determining the forces and moments acting on a wind tunnel model by using a combination of experimentally measured pressures and CFD predictions. The CFD code used was FLO57 (an Euler solver) and the wind tunnel model was a heavily instrumented delta wing with 62.5 deg of leading-edge sweep. A thorough comparison of the CFD results and the experimental data is presented for surface pressure distributions and longitudinal forces and moments. The experimental pressures were also integrated over the surface of the model and the resulting forces and moments are compared to the CFD and wind tunnel results. The accurate determination of various drag increments via the combined use of the CFD and experimental pressures is presented in detail. Melton, John E. and Robertson, David D. and Moyer, Seth A. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project aims to enable the reader to acquire the necessary knowledge to fully understand the main facts and working principles of modern wind tunnels and their application in F1. In addition one of the goals is to enable the reader to get an insight of the motorsport world, realizing how important aerodynamics are in relation to the global performance and handling of a race car. Throughout the entire project particular emphasis has been made to illustrate the importance of wind tunnels and how they are necessary even in teams or companies with powerful CFD systems. Despite the fast advances of IT technologies currently every part of high level motorsports aerodynamics cannot be understood without wind tunnels. Starting in an explanation about why the CFD simulation are still not developed enough to be able to be used as the sole aerodynamic design tool in the designing process of an F1 and explaining how CFD and wind tunnels complement each other the project is then divided into two different parts: Part I: The first part focuses in the theory and definitions behind wind tunnel and aerodynamic testing in general. In order to be able to understand the design and characteristics of wind tunnels it is first necessary to describe the aerodynamics principles and their relation to race car designs. All these explanations have been accompanied by real life examples and explained using data measured directly in real race cars. Everything related to wind tunnel testing has been described in this part. Starting from a description of all the different types of tunnels (classified according to different criteria). The main instrumentation required for wind tunnel testing has also been described in this section as well as the differences between scale-model and full size testing with the positive and negative points of each method. An exhaustive listing with the main facts of all the different F1 tunnel facilities has been included, paying special attention to the Epsilon Euskadi headquarters which include the best wind tunnel dedicated to motorsports in the Spanish territory and possibly one of the best worldwide. Together with the Toyota facilities in Germany, they were among the few that were intended to provide the rental of facilities per hour (as a way of self-financing, his topic is extensively dealt with in the economic part of the study). Part II: The second part includes different practical test and experimentations. Firstly based on real track data of a World Series by Renault 3.5 car, an exhaustive study of the DRS systems and its effects in car performance has been carried out. During all the data analysis references to F1 innovations and regulations are made to help the reader immerse into the racing world. In addition the necessary tools and equations necessary to determine the theoretical top speed of any car knowing their characteristics has also been described and applied to the same World Series race car. As mentioned before in this summary during all these sections of the project it has been a priority to give as much real racing information and data as possible trying to give the reader a real experience of the tools race and design engineers use. Without any hesitation the most important part test of the practical part focuses on the World series car rear-view mirrors being tested in different wind tunnel facilities. The aerodynamic study has been realized using different methodologies and tested in different tunnel types. This whole process is extensively detailed in order to enable the reader if desired to be able to carry this same tests (all the necessary tools and calculations included) Lastly, note that this project is not intended under any circumstances to provide numerical values that can be used in real applications as it focuses more on concepts and is intended to be a reference on wind tunnel experimental methodology rather than in the absolute results.
