Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively and multi-faceted account of Evelyn and William De Morgan, exploring a unique artistic partnership that spanned several cultural circles including the Pre-Raphaelites and Arts and Crafts movement With a partnership spanning two centuries, the Pre-Raphaelite painter Evelyn (1855-1919) and Arts and Crafts potter and author William De Morgan (1839-1917) influenced several significant art movements in nineteenth-century Britain. Despite this, their impact has been relatively overlooked in comparison with their better-known contemporaries. Evelyn & William De Morgan is the first major publication devoted to the work of either artist and their unique relationship. It draws out each artist's individuality while providing a comprehensive view of the expanded cultural milieu in which they functioned, not least with regard to new attitudes towards Victorian marriage as a working partnership. The fully illustrated publication features numerous contributions which explore the reach of the De Morgans' partnership, their political and spiritual interests, and their immersion within several influential cultural circles of the day, including Pre-Raphaelite, Arts and Crafts, and Aesthetic Movement groups. The book presents a lively and multifaceted account of the De Morgans and their creative partnership. Download or read book Suffragist Artists in Partnership written by Rose Lucy Ella Rose and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the interconnected creative partnerships of the Wattses and De Morgans - Victorian artists, writers and suffragists This is the first book dedicated to examining the marital relationships of Mary and George Watts and Evelyn and William De Morgan as creative partnerships. The study demonstrates how they worked, individually and together, to support greater gender equality and female liberation in the nineteenth century. The author traces their relationship to early and more recent feminism, reclaiming them as influential early feminists and reading their works from twentieth-century theoretical perspectives. By focusing on neglected female figures in creative partnerships, the book challenges longstanding perceptions of them as the subordinate wives of famous Victorian artists and of their marriages as representatives of the traditional gender binary. This is also the first academic critical study of Mary Watts's recently published diaries, Evelyn De Morgan's unpublished writings and other previously unexplored archival material by the Wattses and the De Morgans. Key Features:Reveals the ways in which the couples promoted progressive socio-political ideasDraws on extensive archival research and analyses unpublished writings, including diaries and poemsFocuses on neglected female figures in creative partnerships to challenge longstanding perceptions of them as the submissive or subordinate wives of famous Victorian artists, and of their marriages as representatives of the traditional gender binaryShows how male and female writers and artists engaged with mid-to-late Victorian feminism together and individually, reclaiming them as influential early feminists

Book Synopsis Out of the Shadows by : Marilyn Pemberton
Download or read book Out of the Shadows written by Marilyn Pemberton and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was Mary De Morgan and why should she be dragged out of the shadows cast by her illustrious parents, her male siblings and the members of the Arts and Crafts circle in which she moved? Why should the academic spotlight be shone onto her life and works? De Morgan (1850–1907) was undoubtedly a woman of her time: she was unmarried and therefore one of the million or so “odd” women who had to earn their own living, which she did mainly by writing. She was one of the many who took part in the great effort to “improve” the lives of the poor in the East End of London; she was caught up in the spiritualist phenomena, not only because her mother was an ardent supporter and practitioner, but also because De Morgan herself was considered to be a “seer”; she, like many Victorians, suffered from the curse of tuberculosis but despite going to live in Egypt for health reasons, she then became the directress of a girls’ reformatory until her death. Through the analysis of her fairy tales, her sole novel, her non-fictional articles and her unpublished short stories, De Morgan is revealed to be an early feminist and “New Woman,” an advocate of William Morris’s philosophies and a social reformer, but also a rather disappointed and disillusioned woman. Letters to and from her family and friends paint a colourful picture of family life during the second half of the nineteenth century, and extracts from well-known people’s biographies, reminiscences and diaries flesh out De Morgan’s character and help explain why George Bernard Shaw considered her to be a “devil incarnate.”
