Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Papers from more than three decades reflect the development of thinkingover the dialogical framework that shapes verbal expression of comprehending experience and that has to be exhibited in responsible argumentations. With dialogical reconstructions of experience owing to the methodical constructivism of the "Erlangen School" it is possible to uncover the origin of many conceptual oppositions in traditional philosophical talk, like natural vs. artificial/cultural, subjective vs. objective, etc., and to solve philosophical riddles connected with them.

Book Synopsis Knowing Beyond Knowledge by : Thomas A. Forsthoefel
Download or read book Knowing Beyond Knowledge written by Thomas A. Forsthoefel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002. This book builds on contemporary discussion of 'mysticism' and religious experience by examining the process and content of 'religious knowing' in classical and modern Advaita. Drawing from the work of William Alston and Alvin Plantinga, Thomas Forsthoefel examines key streams of Advaita with special reference to the conditions, contexts, and scope of epistemic merit in religious experience. Forsthoefel uniquely employs specific analytical categories of contemporary Western epistemologies as heuristics to examine the cognitive dimension of religious experience in Indian Vedanta. Showing the developing nuances in the analysis of religious experience in the thought of Shankara and his immediate disciples (Suresvara and Padmapada) as well as in the teaching of Ramana Maharshi, an understudied but important South Indian saint of the 20th century, this book offers a substantial contribution to studies of Indian philosophy as well as to contemporary philosophy of religion. Using the tools of exegesis and comparative philosophy, Forsthoefel argues for a careful justification of claims following religious experience, even if such claims involve, as they do in the Advaita, a paradoxical 'knowing beyond knowledge'.
Book Synopsis The Philosophy of the Brahma-sutra by : Aleksandar Uskokov
Download or read book The Philosophy of the Brahma-sutra written by Aleksandar Uskokov and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brahma-sutra, attributed to Badaraya (ca. 400 CE), is the canonical book of Vedanta, the philosophical tradition which became the doctrinal backbone of modern Hinduism. As an explanation of the Upanishads, it is principally concerned with the ideas of Brahman, the great ground of Being, and of the highest good. The Philosophy of the Brahma-sutra is the first introduction to concentrate on the text and its ideas, rather than its reception and interpretation in the different schools of Vedanta. Covering the epistemology, ontology, theory of causality and psychology of the Brahma-sutra, and its characteristic theodicy, it also: · Provides a comprehensive account of its doctrine of meditation · Elaborates on its nature and attainment, while carefully considering the wider religious context of Ancient India in which the work is situated · Draws the contours of Brahma-sutra's intellectual biography and reception history. By contextualizing the Brahma-sutra's teachings against the background of its main collocutors, it elucidates how the work gave rise to widely divergent ontologies and notions of practice. For both the undergraduate student and the specialist this is an illuminating and necessary introduction to one of Indian philosophy's most important works.
Book Synopsis Hermeneutics and Language in Purva Mimamsa by : Othmar Gächter
Download or read book Hermeneutics and Language in Purva Mimamsa written by Othmar Gächter and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1990 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critical investigation into Sabara's realism shows satyam as the real coincidence between reality and language. Sabara's statement: Sabda speaks, it makes known is the key to language. Language by its very nature neither objectifies nor subjectifies the status of reality. It presents through Sabda what it really is. Hermeneutics sustains this intrinsic function of language. It aims at overcoming the lack of understanding. This Indian approach asserts hermeneutics as experience in which man participates fully in rality and language as one whole. Genuine hermeneutics is thus the real response to what really is and that includes also the response to actual life.
Book Synopsis Buddhist Philosophy of Language in India by : Lawrence J. McCrea
Download or read book Buddhist Philosophy of Language in India written by Lawrence J. McCrea and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-14 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jnanasrimitra (975-1025) was regarded by both Buddhists and non-Buddhists as the most important Indian philosopher of his generation. His theory of exclusion combined a philosophy of language with a theory of conceptual content to explore the nature of words and thought. Jnanasrimitra's theory informed much of the work accomplished at Vikramasila, a monastic and educational complex instrumental to the growth of Buddhism. His ideas were also passionately debated among successive Hindu and Jain philosophers. This volume marks the first English translation of Jnanasrimitra's Monograph on Exclusion, a careful, critical investigation into language, perception, and conceptual awareness. Featuring the rival arguments of Buddhist and Hindu intellectuals, among other thinkers, the Monograph reflects more than half a millennium of competing claims while providing an invaluable introduction to a crucial philosopher. Lawrence J. McCrea and Parimal G. Patil familiarize the reader with the author, themes, and topics of the text and situate Jnanasrimitra's findings within his larger intellectual milieu. Their clear, accessible, and accurate translation proves the influence of Jnanasrimitra on the foundations of Buddhist and Indian philosophy.

Book Synopsis The Future of the Philosophy of Religion by : M. David Eckel
Download or read book The Future of the Philosophy of Religion written by M. David Eckel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-12 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays on the philosophy of religion and its future brings together accomplished thinkers across several related fields, from comparative philosophy to analytic and continental philosophy of religion and beyond. Contributing authors address pressing questions including: Where does philosophy stand in relation to religion and the study of religion in the 21st century? How ought the philosophy of religion to interact with religious studies and theology to make for fruitful interdisciplinary engagement? And what does philosophy uniquely have to offer to the broad discourse on religion in the modern world? Through exploring these questions and more, the authors’ goal is not that of meeting the philosophical future, but of forging it. Readers will enter a vivid conversation through engaging essays which demonstrate the importance of disciplinary openness and show that we do not need to sacrifice depth in order to achieve breadth. Modernity and postmodernity come together in a constantly evolving discussion that moves the philosophy of religion forward, while keeping an eye toward the experience accumulated in past centuries. This book will interest students of philosophy, theology, religious studies, and other fields that wonder about the place of philosophy and religion in today’s world. It also has much to offer advanced scholars in these fields, through its breadth and forward thinking.
